I thought it would be great to get a group together of people who have a Gunners Mate in training or one on duty. I hope we can all give each other a little insight as to what is in store for our Navy Men and Women!!

As Joyce from Tucson knows, we are traveling from western Illinois to Tucson in a couple weeks. One of our stops is Kansas City for the highland games, then to Tucson to visit family and meet my Navy moms friends! Our sailor will join us for part of the visit to grandma's. His little girls will be with us, too. I think we'll stop somewhere in Oklahoma for a night and New Mexico, too. With two little ones, we have to stop!

An early Congrats to you! I remember how exciting this time is, and for good reason! Not only will it be tremendous and outstanding for your son, but for you too! What a happy occasion! All their hard work is paying off, and will show through! Have a safe trip up, take alot of kleenix, and check the camera to be ready! You sure don't want to miss this!

Classing up after PIR depends on the numbers going into each rate, which rate they do, etc. First is Indoc, the SCC, ATT, and then to GM A-School. (By the way, the CO of GM A-School is AWESOME! They have alot of really wonderful instructors!) I have listened to some having to go through so much waiting, but I have been fortunate to also experience the no-wait and fly right through too. Good luck to all of you.

Too many things come into play to really say what will happen. Yes, sometimes there is quite a wait, sometimes there are none at all. So the wide variety is up for grabs. As you may have heard the expression already of "hurry up and wait" is true. But, that happens in the civilian life as well. If they keep on track, use their time wisely, study for anything and everything as they get the opportunity, it will work to their benefit. GM is a great rate. (sorry for the poetic strum there!) And if they are one of the lucky and chosen few to go to C-school, count as an honor. Just remember to be encouraging, learn as much as you can, and know that Anything can change! I have been thru much of this x 2 for awhile, but honestly, I know NOTHING! I learn so much every day too! We've alot to be proud of, and honored in their commitments! They are all where God has placed them, for a reason. Bless them all, and moms...you did a great job! Wives, they couldn't do it without you! GF's, they need your support and you help make the difference. Grandparents, dads, and siblings-without you they would not be who they are either!

Ellen, I take it your son is doing the VLS course in SD? If so, he will enjoy the schooling! It is Intense, with ALOT of books to 'know by heart', but they also get done early in the day and have a bit more free time. If they show the enthusiasm, and really try hard, they will get through the course that much easier, and have an enjoyable time.
Susan, I know it is frustrating to always be waiting, and not seeming to get anywhere. But it is really a short wait in the scheme of comparison to ones life, its just that kids do not see it that way, no real experience to draw from. Do stay as encouraged for him as you can, he will gain that and be helped. Send the little care packages, cards. It helps to lift the spirits as well. Especially if caught off guard and unexpectedly!

Hello Susan...My grandson's PIR was Jan. 9 '09 and he is on hold for A school in GL now, also. I know the wait seems endless, but we have to stay strong for them and keep them encouraged. Hang in there TOUGH NAVY MOM!!!
Ellen - congrats on your son getting his orders for C school and he will love San Diego...He's on his way now!
Everyone, have a very safe and enjoyable Memorial weekend.

How wonderful for you Theresa! I know you will be having a blast there! They "do it up nicely" there on the A-School side for the 4th! You Must take lots of pixs! I know that it has to be hard doing all that extra 'cleaning', and it seems 'forever', but in the reality of it all, the time is short. He can try studying for the tests to progress up in rank, can he not, in the meantime? Is he hoping to go on to C-school? They are very exasperating, but can learn so much. The books are VERY thick and intense, but if they show the enthusiasm the instructors work really hard at helping them that much more! Hopefully he will be starting classes soon.
Darcy, welcome into the group! Glad you will be going to PIR! Bring the box of kleenix's! It will be one of the most memorable and moving experiences you will endure in your sailors life! "Cry babies" are a requirement! Ha! Glad his division won the privledge to write 3 times a week, what an honor! He will be very busy these next few weeks, and let me tell you, he will be just as excited seeing his family as you will be for him! Those photos in their dress blues are awesome, the pride will swell up inside of you like you can't imagine! An early Congrats for all of you!
