Yeah, I think the rules vary some.  One source said not to send pork rinds or any other pork products (Muslim country and all) but the guys asked for 'em and I sent 'em.  There wasn't a problem.  Not that I ever heard about, anyway.  (I didn't intend to be disrespectful of Muslim dietary laws.  It just didn't occur to me until too late that what was inside a package to a bunch of GIs would matter to the local people.)

WE have talk about one in Bloomington...will double check with the mom that wanted to do it

Just FYI I think it might make a difference to what region they are in about the body wash I was advised to send non smelly stuff....was told, don't want him walking around and into homes and stuff smelling good.....but my son is way out there so I'm sure it matters where they are

Hey,  carols_kitchen!  I'm kind of centrally located between Decatur and Champaign.  Bloomington-Normal and Mattoon are doable for me too.  Even Danville.  When I look at what other's have posted there seems to be a sizable east central Illinois contingent.  I would love to take part in a packing party!  I feel I must warn you however.  My son is a DEPPER.  He leaves in November so I anticipate being totally insane and of no use to anyone for about eight weeks around the holidays.  I don't know.  Can you pack while wearing a straight-jacket?  And how does one accessorize for those festive holiday parties?  Do straight-jackets come in silver?  You know....   For New Year's.

Mom of J--great picture.

Anyone else who wants to go to my packing party I'm facilitating in Indianapolis on Aug 20th, just let me know!  So, am I hearing we want one in Illinois again--but where?

If I'm reading things correctly the packing is in Davenport, IA.  (Just across the border, isn't it?  In the quad cities?)  I'm too far away in east central.  Just 3 posts back, including my long-winded one.

I worked with a woman who's son was in Afghanistan and his unit sent a wish list.  I sent beef jerky, chips, gummy bears, fruit roll ups, nuts, baby wipes, foot powder, DVDs (they requested episodes of The Unit , go figure) Christmas cards individually addressed and mailed (that took a while! perky and charming for long periods of time (and in writing, no less) was a strain!) sun screen, sample sized Gold Bond powder for 18, and Axe body wash (that was a special request, though why it was important to smell good when surrounded by GIs and veiled women I never did figure out).  One of the guys actually wrote to say thanks which was nice but unnecessary.  I had a blast doing the shopping and getting it all together!  I'm too far away to join the packing party (eastern central Illinois) but let me know of future parties that might be closer to me.

When and where is the packing party going to be? I would love to join in on that!

Navy Moms are hosting a packing party to send items to the troops. We have two missions. Some boxes will go to the Shadowhawks unit on the USS Bush. Those boxes will be shipped with postage paid by Molly's Adopt A Sailor funds as they won a grant from Pepsi. The other boxes will be shipped to a remote Army unit in Afghanistan. We need donations of beef jerky, tuna packets, individual drink mixes, wipes, Easy Mac, brown t-shirts, black or brown boot socks, and fun stuff--dvd's, games, silly stuff.
