Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii

It's actually a Marine base but my son is in the Navy and is stationed along with a lot of others that make up Navy forces. And I would love to hear information from others about the area, or others that have family or friends stationed there.

He will be with VP 9.  He is a AM.  I am excited for him as I grew up in Hawaii and miss it greatly.  I am hoping he makes friends out there.  Continue

Becky!  just found out more.  My son is currently deployed overseas in Europe and we just chatted on facebook-private chat.  here's what he said about phone cards while deployed (this is for fixed wing aircrew squadrons, housed in hotels, inns, dorms while deployed-so internet is ordered when you arrive and you share that cost with roomie)

"Skype is the way to go when overseas.  only about $2 bucks a month, easy to sign up, he should know how to do that if he's under 40 haha! He needs a laptop or ipad....though i have SKYPE on my phone too and could use it there, but haven't.....but he NEEDS to have access to internet in his room, providing he's in a dorm, lodge or hotel with a fixed-wing squadron.  Helo might mean he is attached to a ship?..so I don't know about procedures for that. I think if he's on a ship he will only have access to land lines then maybe phone card might be helpful?

here's what my son does, (3 deployments so far) Skype account!

...I receive those on my cell.  He uses his laptop  to email us too.

Son will soon be deployed to a base outside U.S. He will not be taking his phone, so will pre-paid phone cards be the answer and if so, which ones? I've heard that some work and some do not. Thanks for the help as always.

thanks Becky for the tip about the cottages.  We've been to that beach too, just lovely!.......  We didn't stay at the lodges tho, but drove past them and sorta looked around. very nice area.....my son says they go to that beach now and then

Just returned from a visit with son, who is stationed on K-Bay. If anyone is looking for a reasonable place to stay...The Lodges on base are fantastic. We rented one of the cottages (private beach) and had a blast. They book up fast, so don't wait until the last minute.

PAM   I found this by google search: Kaneohe, gas stations.. Looks like its a Chevron near the entrance to the marine base. Our son said the station on base is the cheapest and everybody gets gas there, but then... we lost 'connection' with him (he's deployed) so we don't know the name of the station!!  Arrgh! sorry.

Thanks storymom!  Christmas is a few months, but we can buy gift cards through my daughters school and I usually start now.
