OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPPERS leaving in the month of October (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

If you have October ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in October, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Fitness Standards"The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes 37 seconds for female recruits."

The closer October gets I find myself getting pretty stressed out. I am both excited and scared. Sometimes I try to forget he is leaving and then other times I can't wait for his navy life to begin. I am just glad there are other moms here that have the same feelings that I do. Somehow it makes it easier. How is your son doing? B is gradually but surely learning everything and hopefully will be prepared when he goes to BC. Have a nice evening.

Thank you for the form address. I did register for the site, but I seem to be having trouble with it. Did you have any trouble? When I tried to update my profile page and post a thread, it gave me a message saying there was a security token missing. No clue what that means. ???? I messaged the administrator about it, about 90 minutes ago, and I haven't heard anything yet. It does seem as though the forum is a little bit old, so that may be why. There doesn't seem to be very recent chat activity, though. :(

Maybe we can all join and revive it. :)

I did want to add, though, that I was browsing over some of the threads and a lot of them are have extremely helpful information. There does seem to be a lot of great information on it.

Then look for graduation something or other and look for Judy's name as the one who started it. She started it in Jan 2010 after her child's PIR but answered my comment just recently. You could also go to "my page" and look for the comments I made or she made. It should be there. I hope you understand what I wrote. lol. It sounds really disorganized. Kathy

I wanted to mention to everyone here, there is a very nice mom named Judy, that has a forum discussion. She is one of the last December alumni and can answer many of our questions. My son yesterday said the time is really going fast now and I agree. Have a good night. Kathy

We have changed dates on flights before, I don't know about them refunding money though. We have always just kept the credit and used it later.
I am also worried about the weather in December since we would be going north from here as well. My dh lived in Chicago when we met and we dated back and forth from there to Baltimore, so I do know that the winters there can be pretty bad. I am going to try and convince my dh to fly as well. If we use Priceline, I know that renting a car won't be too much money. Although I can't wait for the excitement of their graduation, I know that it will be bittersweet. My little boy will really be a man then. :)

We can book flights when we know their division and ship numbers and when their PIR is, about a week or two after they leave for BC. I also worry about availability and price of the airline tickets. Flying around the holidays can be expensive and crowded, not to mention delays. I have heard Southwest Airlines is really good about changing dates and refunding. I would check with them in advance before buying tickets though just to be sure. Being from south TX it would be difficult to drive, especially in the winter. I hate to fly but I would never miss my son's graduation into the navy. You know, not hail or high water. lol. Kathy

Thanks for all the info. I just wonder when we should start booking flights or making plans to get to Great Lakes. I guess we really can't do anything until they are already there. I just worry because it will be so close to the holidays and flights might be scarce and/or expensive. My husband wants to drive, but we live in NM and I'm not keen on that idea.

Good luck to your son with memorizing the General Orders of Sentry. My son just started reading those. He isn't very far in his academics. I think so far, he only knows the Chain of Command and the alphabet. But, at least he has finally started them.
