This 4th has me reflecting so much on what has happened with our country and the fact that my son chose to serve makes me extremely proud. Yet a bit emotional with the thoughts of fireworks.

Delete Comment Blue To Gold......This past Friday evening I had the honor along with 7 other Blue Star mothers of attending the memorial for one of our fallen heros. Cpt. Jeffery Robert Standfest from St. Clair, Mich. He was with our forces in Afganistan. It was a very humbleing experiance to stand there before the family of this young man as we presented his mother with the Gold Star Banner. It is an honor unforunately that we have had to make too often of late.
I know that we gave some meassure of comfort to this family if only for a monment. we can not bring their child back but they know we are there for a shoulder to lean on.
Mom's hold your children close if they are neaar you and cherish them all.
May God hold this family and all the families of our fallen in his hands as we hold them all in our hearts.

Ruth VH - I am so excieted!!!! I know of 2 other Moms from USS Essex group that are going - one from CA and another from FL. Katie happens to know both of their sons, along with the sons whose Mom's want us to give them hugs from them. My 13 year old Thomas will be accompanying me - he wants to know if he gets to shoot any weapons or go swimming. He thinks it would be great if they needed a volunteer for 'man over board'.

Kathy B - when is the Art Fair in Ann Arbor? We get over that way about once a month from the Battle Creek area. We like to shop at Whole Foods Market and we enjoy the art fair when we can get to it.

Jaz04 - No reason to laugh. Katie joined in 10/8/08 and I can remember waiting for that first letter. I wrote her just about every day when she was gone and couldn't wait for her letter each week. PIR was wonderful - and so was just hugging her, seeing her and talking with her.

Being new to the Navy, I just have to tell you all what a relief it was to finally hear from my son after 3 weeks of bc. Remember those days? I know you may laugh, it's ok. I didn't know it would be so hard on me not to hear from him that long.

I've never been to the Art Fair. Not even sure when it is. I'm going to Japan in July to see my daughter. Thomas and I are going on a 3-day Gator cruise on her ship.

Joe is working at GETRAG on Mound Rd for a summer internship.

Kathy B - I can imagine you would be preoccupied - that really is something to have to deal with. Prayers are with you as you help all those involved.

My son is doing a summer internship in Sterling Heights. It is quite a drive from our home, so it is good that he is able to carpool from AnnArbor/Ypsi.

Kathy B - How are you doing? I can understand what you are going thru. I have a similar situation with my daughter who went to work at a camp in Blind River Ontario for the summer - limited internet - roaming charges break the bank, so who knows how much I'll hear from her. I'm sure you will get thru - you certainly will treasure the calls and contacts even more than usual when you hear from her. I'm sure she is thrilled to be invovled with her first detachment.

Katie and her ship soon begin their ship's INSURV, then the Gator Cruise will follow shortly after that. Our son Thomas (13) and I will be heading to Japan for that. I've never been in any other country besides Ontario, Canada.
