The Shadowhawks are an Electronic Attack Squadron & are deployed on the Bush aircraft carrier in the Gulf.

There are 216 sailors assigned to the Shadowhawks -- 190 men and 26 women.  They received pillowcases when they arrived on the ship, so no need to worry about pillowcases for this adoption.

I received this sweet message from our POC:  “…it is so hot out here.  But it seems wrong to ask for anything.  Whatever you do will be received well by our Sailors.  And, thank you for what you are doing, not just for us, but for every Sailor life you are touching.”  He went on to say that our ideas for them would be far better than anything he could think of & he didn’t want to ask others for input as he wants this to be a huge & total surprise.

So, Moms we have our work cut out for us …  One thing I thought we should keep in mind is that they will be receiving their boxes right around  9/11 – the reason they are deployed & still fighting this war on terror that the other side started 10 years ago.  Let’s make certain that our sailors know:

                         “We Will Never Forget.”

Many will have sad memories of that day – NYC, DC & PA, let’s do our best to put a positive spin on things. I was thinking for a theme - “Picnic in Central Park”.  Central Park is a GREAT place for a picnic!

And, August is ‘National Picnic Month.’  In Central Park, people read, play ball, throw Frisbees, children blow bubbles & draw pictures with sidewalk chalk. There are artists painting & drawing, people writing or talking.  Of course, we can’t do anything about walking a dog (& pooper-scooping), but people jog, do yoga & catch some rays while playing in the fountains.  And, of course, eat!!!  (So we need food/snack items.)

Perhaps items can be red, white & blue to acknowledge American endurance on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11.

Shipping will be August 22 – 27th.

These are just my thoughts.  So, let the discussions begin … !!!!

MESSAGE JUST RECEIVED THAT THE FEMALE SAILORS ARE BEING TAKEN ON.  If someone wants to help in some way, contact Lauren.

Well.... there are coolers that blow air on the ships... and it is supposed to be cooler!!  But really everything is warm and humid... the sailors that I know have said 'you take your shower and ten minutes later you could use another one'...  although some sleep in sleeping bags as their berthing areas are very cool...  all depends on where in the ship you are!!

Lauren, honey, if you need to know ANYTHING about an air craft carrier, you just ask Molly or ME!!  We lived on one y'know, for a tad too many days!

I think the #1 thing they will want is food and lots of it, eh Molly? Drink packets for the not-so-good tasting water on the boat, maybe "Pies in a Jar" or dried cherries or apple chips (what's more American than apple or cherry pie?) "Chicken" flavored crackers (fried chicken), a book to read (Uncle John's Bathroom Reader??)

Beach blankets for picnicking, funny paper plates and napkins - bright colors;

Any more fun ideas?

Sue, I think you are right on track.  Let's really flush-out the Central Park Picnic theme?  I told my hubbie I want to go to Toys 'R Us and see if I can find some battery operated dogs they can take for a walk!!  LOL
Picnic foods. Hmmmm, I always took desert to anything in the park. That and frisbees. Hot, maybe some squishy water balls. Those always were a hit as well with my kids. Kept them entertained for hours. Liking this theme already!

if they can't have stuff on the deck I guess we better limit the water toys...or is the a play area ???

ok I'm going to read up so I don't have so many questions

This is silly maybe, but I was thinking HAWKS--like sports teams.  I wonder if we can get the Seattle SeaHAWKS, Atlanta HAWKS, and Iowa HAWKeyes to donate things.  I have a contact with the Hawkeye football team I can try.  Sports, tailgating picnics....
Go for it Ruth!  It'll be football season when they get their packages!
Donna - is Tammi still doing her party the end of the month or will she be changing due to the shipping dates of 8/22-27?  Do you know the what date the RI group is doing there party.  Trying to pick a date around family stuff for mine but don't want to take away from someone else's.  This weekend is just too soon - how about the 20th as I was planning on doing the Community Sew and Tammi's packing party.
As far as I know Tami is still on for Aug.27 or 28.  It will just be one of the last group of packages to go.  Lois and I haven't talked about RI.  Why don't you pick your date?  Maybe the RI moms will prefer to come to yours!  I wouldn't wait on them.  Whatever date you choose, I'll be there my friend!  Count me as a yes.  I can certainly do the 20th.  Let's plan to go thru the list of MA Moms together and see if we can't shake some loose!!  LOL
Let me look at the MAS Calendar. We are supposes to have ALL packing parties on our shared calendar...Chris OR Tammie...could you send me an update of any new packing parties..I think the only one that I see is Carol....but then again I was born blonde..tee he he
Diane, I will be checking in with my mommas here in MA and RI this afternoon (I hope).  Have an appt. to receive an epidureal infusion into my neck and then have to rest.  I figure I can rest on the phone since sitting at the computer will be out.  We will get our dates set and on the calendar -- and forms for Chris and Tammie.   Thanks for the reminder.

The 14th just freed up for me, so I can do either the 14th or the 20th.  If the 20th works for you, lets go with that.  The 14th might be to soon to get some shopping done, etc.  I've already started picking up boxes from the post office seeing I'm there everyday.  Will call their supply line to get my Packing Supply Kit - just did this but had to stretch the truth a little bit..

What else do you need from me to get it posted on the MAS shared calendar.
