Kerry, I agree with you. This website and having other Moms to share your stories with makes it more tolerable. I miss my son like crazy but I know I'm not the only one missing a son or daughter. My son left in July 2007, and has been in training ever since. Finally in October he will earn his Air Crew Wings and be able to get on with what he joined the Navy for....serving his country. I/we couldn't be prouder of the choices our children have made for themselves and for their lives.

You guys are great! I'm really excited for my son - I love reading all these comments and passing them on to him. And he's always very interested in hearing what you have to say. I think it's great "food for thought" for him. I do wish this website had been here when my oldest left in December 2007. It was extremely difficult for me. Having other Moms to pass along - not only your experiences - but the experiences of your Sailors, is priceless!

Kerry, my son was one of those that went through Seal training and made it to 2 days before Hell Week. He did not DOR(quit), he was performance dropped as he was 5 minutes short on a 2 mile ocean swim in winter time.....brrr. Anyways, my point in telling you this is that he went on as a Rescue Swimmer and he is much happier for it and so am I for that matter. I'm with Chris, our Rescue Swimmer sons/daughters are the best !!! I'm sure glad my son got into this program and I have this website to find other Navy Rescue Swimmer Mom's just like me. ; )

Hello! Donna and Kari, thanks for your encouragement! Yesterday I went with my son to the YMCA for their monthly testing (we were combining errands going into town). This is the mandatory monthly testing for the Depper's who already have contracts for Seal, SWCC, EOD and Rescue Swimmer. My son was the only Rescue Swimmer. There were 10 others who have Seal contracts. So, yes, this was a small representation of the Rescue Swimmers. After these guys retested, they left to do the remaining part of their qualifications. I stayed (it was air conditioned!) and watched the special warfare instructor work with "brand new" candidates for Seal. This was their first time to be in the pool - with the instructor, that is. I was very impressed with how the instructor worked with them. But, no rescue swimmer candidates........so 400 in the entire Navy? Wow, I believe it!

Kari, I meant to ask .....How was the graduation? I bet you were so excited to see Derik. Did you get to pin his wings on? Congratulations! Does he know where he will be going next?

Chris A, Shawn is also at the Air Show today. I'm sure they are having a good time at that today.

Thank you Beth! Not looking forward to having my last one leave home..... I've been through this before with my oldest leaving for the Navy in December 2007. Here I go again...........however, I am very happy for my Depper as he really wanted to switch to Rescue Swimmer after having been on the Swim Team his Senior year. After having always played football, it was his first and only year to be on swim team and surprised everyone. He joined swim so he could fine tune those skills for SWCC and actually discovered he enjoyed it so much that he wanted to switch to it.

Just wanted to say Hello to everyone......my youngest just switched from SWCC contract to Rescue Swimmer -- or is it SAR? Admittedly, I'm a bit confused and need to read up on all this. He is a Depper and graduates high school this Saturday. Not sure yet when he's leaving. His SWCC contract had him leaving July 29th but the thought is he will be leaving sometime this month. I'll be following this group closely to see if I can figure out what is what. Best wishes to all!

Alaina, my son is a Rescue Swimmer and yes they do have to have security clearance for that job. I don't believe your finances would play into his ability to receive the appropriate security clearance. I would call his recruiter and check to be sure.

Good morning everyone. I don't know if you have seen the news this morning but a Navy helicopter with 5 crew members went down off the coast of San Diego. I am hearing that it's just off of Coronado, not sure about that part, as CNN reports it's off the coast of Mexico. God Bless those sailors and their families.

Wow, Congratulations to Derik. Kari, that is so great. Will you get to do the pinning of his wings? Shawn classes up for FRAC on June 1st. He is excited for it to start. I talked with him at length the other night, of course he say much about his latest trip to "Hell". He also said it was a good learning experience. He is glad there is a 4 day weekend coming up.

I'm sure glad that Greg is doing well Chris. Kari, will you be going to the "winging" ceremony?
