It is so great being able to talk with all of you. Thanks ... for answering questions, for letting me share what I know, and for sharing our truly special children. Chris, I'm curious. As a jet flyer, what Navy traditions has Erin shared. While I don't image the women pilots grow mustaches, I'm sure they have come up with a few of their own things to do.! Can you share any that are unique to the women?

DJ ... It is a 'wow' week for them as they do their qualifications. Chris was in San Diego so they started the week by hitting a few bars. They all grew the traditional mustaches (we could hardly see Chris' in his pictures). They take lots of pictures of the carrier and each other looking pretty "macho" next to their planes parked on the carrier. And, they will get the wind knocked out of them - real good - on their first landing and take-off. They also should receive a video (from within their jet) of their first landing, waiting, and take-off. It was thrilling to watch! Also, check out his carrier's website for they usually post pictures of some of their landings. Ask him for his jet's number to find him. Chris' first landing wound up being the website's key picture during his week there. Best to YOU, DJ as you wait out the week. I'll be thinking and praying for you both.

Chris, our prayers to you too. While it is an anxious time for you both, it is such a great accomplishment when you both make it through!

Deborah, probably the same situation as my son who was in a sailor suit at age 1!

I never in a million years ever thought that Eric would end up in the Navy, much less be a Commander!! I had thought that he would be in the Air Force and eventually be a Captain for one of the ailines! Boy, was I wrong!! Although he did start out in the Navy Air and recieved his wings. At one point in time the Navy wanted him to be a teacher on the P-3's, but he decided against it. Life sure is funny and surprising!

By the way. If you enjoyed "An Officer and a Gentlemen", the base where it was filmed is in Port Townsend, WA ... a short ferry ride from Whidbey Island.

Well it seems that several of us agree on the beauty of the Northwest. And they do grow as much or more tulips than Holland! My son sent some beautiful pictures. When we were there in March, we passed by the Everett Naval Station, but didn't go on base. Maybe next visit, especially to see an aircraft carrier. Leanne, what type of training do you do? I live in the Atlanta area and do development and delivery of quality training.

Hi all. Like many of you, my son's distance is great. We're diagonally across from each other ... he's in WA and we're in GA. Catherine W.: he loves it so much (he's now been on Whidbey Island one year) he's already thinking of retiring there. He even loves the island itself. The area has lots of things to do. And, his best friend from his childhood (when we both then lived in MA) is also in Seattle working for Boeing. He couldn't be happier. While he likes the area, they've had extremes there in both record snowfall this past winter (10 inches of snow) and record temperatures this summer (102 degrees). He also doesn't like when the fog rolls in and prevents his flying!

NavyGatorMom - Welcome aboard! My son went through Whiting, but doing the t-35 jet. Good place. Not much there but at least you can drive to Pensacola. Great beaches and restaurants! Oh, yeah, my son went Aurburn, War Eagles! Fly Navy! I look forward to sharing stories.

dooby1424 - Congrats on 4 LT's!! Chris was on the Stennis last year, but only for about 5 days doing his quals. He doesn't know yet what ship he'll be on for the Ea-6b quals this fall and then will ship out on his first deployment ... again, he doesn't know yet which one.

Walt'sMom - My son was very disappointed at first to get Whidbey when he wanted F-18's and all his buddies in his class got the F-18's. But, once up there he loved it and is glad he's there. He's even already thinking of retiring there one day and was happy to hear that Whidbey is the only base that has the Prowler, soon to be the Growler. He's camping, hiking, goes to the arts, music, and sailing festivals and especially loves flying through the mountains. He and his wife have even bought a house there already. He is looking forward to next year when he moves up to the Growler. I was in Boston in May and was dining at a restaurant. I saw a beer bottle that is used to carry out beer from a micro brewery. The bottle is called a "Growler" and the label was printed with "Gotta Get A Growler." I bought it (empty of course) and sent it to him since that is his current mantra! ;-)

Best wishes to all moms!
