My son's group in A school had no dream sheets....no wish lists...... He actually got his orders before his room mate who was the same rate and had graduated A school well before him. He told me a few weeks ago that he would be in OK forever......I'm sure nothing is set in stone with any military branch...but he loves Aircrew and being part of TACAMO.

My son has been in Hawaii for almost 4 years now.  His original 1st choice was going to be Guam.  We talked to some Navy veterans who gave us a little info about Guam.  We knew our son would not be happy there so we passed on the info to him and he agreed.  Number 1 was that the Navy will not ship your vehicle to Guam for you.  The island is no small that you really don't need a car.  Also that there is not very much to do on the island. My son would not go anywhere without a car; he also has to have something to do to keep busy.  He gets into trouble if he doesn't have something to keep him busy!!!  So he put Hawaii as his 1st choice and he got it.  He is happy there.  He belongs to a car club, is now certified to scuba dive, takes gorgeous pictures, hikes and parties with his friends.  He makes good use of being near the beach a lot too!

He graduated 3rd in his class at A school and I think that may be why he got his first choice.  Also there were a lot of openings as several of his friends from A school went to Hawaii.

I hope your Sailor will enjoy Hawaii as much as mine is.  It is a different life style and takes a little getting used to, but it is a nice place to live for awhile.

Don't be surprised if he tells you it is NOT paradise when you have to live there.  I was shocked when my son first told me that!  But it is like everywhere else.  It is paradise when on vacation, but when you live there every day some of the excitement wears off after a while.  But, he plans to stay there through his shore duty which will start in about 18 months. So it can't be that bad.

Virginia was choice #3 of the ones he had. I was kind of hoping he would get that  one but he got Hawaii instead. He really wanted Guam , so I figure Hawaii isn't as bad but still not as accessible as VA would have been. Part of his reasoning for going in the Navy was to travel so he REALLY didn't want to get stuck with VA. I used to live in MD and love it back east.

Very few people go to the A school ones, there were maybe 30 people there. The only reason we went was because it was within driving distance and we got to bring him home for 2 weeks afterward.

PIR is VERY pomp and ceremony while graduation from A school was VERY informal and relaxed! They even stopped several times so people could take pics of them being handed their diplomas, etc. They even said at the beginning that this ceremony is for you and the sailors and if they needed to stop and start over or something they would! It was nice...

Haha! I cleaned my sons room a few weeks into boot camp. Smelled like a locker room. Clearing it out is another story.

Kimnsc; No need to feel guilty about having your son pack his things up when he's home OR moving your daughter into his room. We HAD to clean out my son's room to make sure unwanted things were not living in there!! LOL
