OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Confused about husbands boot camp pay - BAH, separation pay, base pay, etc.

My husband went into boot camp on August 7th. He was paid on September 1st - about $2,100. He told me he made E-2 after passing a PT test. I saw today in the Navy Federal account that his 15th of the month pay was over $1,800. I am worried because it seems like he is getting[paid way too much (especially since he signed us up for Tricare prime, and he is getting deductions for uniforms, etc.)! I live in an area where BAH is $1,680 a month. But it still seems like he is getting paid too much???

I don't know how to look at the LES statement, or if I even can. I just want to know what's going on. Is BAH split up? Is he getting overpaid, or am I missing something?

Can someone please help me figure this out?

I know that you have to have your husbands access info to see his LES on the my pay account but I'm not sure if he sets it up at boot camp or not. You can find the my pay login at
I have a question for you. How long after your hubby went to RTC did you get your DEERS sheet?

2 1/2 weeks after he went in. He went in on the 7th and I got that paperwork on the 24th.

That's what I figured but wasn't too sure. I'm a big planner and I've planned tons of things for me and my daughter to stay occupied while my hubby is in RTC but I know that whenever I get that sheet I am going to drop everything to go to the closest base to get our ID's

Yeah, that was pretty exciting (getting my military id). :)

I was just sharing this post with my husband and we agree that the amount you're seeing is probably correct. E-2 pay with less than 2 years of service is about $1700 a month (quick Google) and your BAH is $1680. Add those and divide by two (1st and 15th pay) and you get $1690. Add in Separation Pay and you've got about $1800. Seems legit. Also, Tricare doesn't deduct anything. Also, yes, BAH is split between your two monthly paychecks.

Just to add on to what NavyWife said, the first paycheck was a little higher because he got paid from the day he entered bootcamp so for about 3 weeks or so instead of just the usual 2, which is why that paycheck was higher.

Ok, sorry if this sounds dumb but I'm new and easily confused. Haha.

Did he get 3/4 of BAH and separation pay and base pay on the Sept.1st check? And then the normal 1/2 on the 15th paycheck?

It still seems like no uniforms or taxes or GI bill or anything is being deducted?

Yes I'm pretty sure about the 3/4.

The uniform allowance would have been credited and then taken away as it was used. You wouldn't even see it and the first paycheck would still be huge. I remember that being the case for us as well.

I'm not sure about taxes though. It's possible to not pay enough on that so you may want to have your husband double check that state taxes and everything are being met. And the only GI that would come out is if he signed up for MGIB, which even then wouldn't start until month 3 or 4 in the Navy.

He wouldn't have gotten separation pay until his second paycheck, that doesn't start until he is gone for 30 days. Then he would be backpaid from the time he left, but they don't give separation pay to Sailors who are away from their families for less than 30 days so they don't pay that until the first paycheck after 30 days (does that make sense, how I explained it?)

Wow! Ok, it's all starting to make sense now... Now I'm not so confused about the numbers I see. Haha. Thank you all so much!!!

if you feel like you are getting paid too much, put the money aside because if they are over paying you then they will expect you to pay it back . so I would just hold off and put it aside until you can get everything straightened out just so be safe, so they don't send you a nice bill saying you need to pay them back X amount of money :)

Thank you for posting this question because everyone's answers helped! So my husband left for BC on 11/4. When he gets paid on 12/1, will that be for the pro-rated month of November?
