Good Morning!

Sher, according to my son, they have A LOT of studying.  He did awesome on his last test (got a 92).  Once his schooling is done, he will come home for 2 weeks :)   and then he will be going to Virginia.

Oh goodness, I think my daughter didn't want to worry me.  Seems they have a lot to study for the MA...is yours on his way to his station?  If so, where to?

My son was taken to the airport at 3:00 AM Saturday. After PIR and Liberty they had to go back to their ship and scrub it down for the new SR's. No sleep that night! That took awhile. His flight did not leave until 6:00 PM out of Chicago O'Hare. We went to the airport on Saturday and spent a few hours with him before we drove back to NY. There were about ten of them traveling to MA School, and he was the person put in charge to make sure everyone stayed together and no one left the airport. He didn't get into San Antonio until very late (midnight--after going through processing, hardly any sleep the 2nd night in a row) In the beginning, he did not care for A School. They had to wait for more SR's to arrive in order to form a full class; so they had classes that did not have to do to do with Master of Arms info., he was bored, and missed his friends from boot camp. On top of that, exhausted from the lack of sleep throughout the prior 48 hours. They are on such a high at PIR, then when they get to MA School they are surprised that they are treated like SR's were at boot camp. Especially when they first arrive. he was given a wonderful roommate, but the sailor was 5 weeks into the program and was on Phase 2 Liberty...he was never in the room. The rule is, no one is allowed in your room at all, so he was a little lonely when classes were not in session. His friends were all put in rooms together, so they were playing video games and watching TV, he had no one to talk to or hang out with. It was pretty much 100-112 degrees during Aug., so no one wanted to go outside at all. Once MA classes began, things got better. He made new friends and after the OC test was over he had a new sense of confidence. He did have to Tap on a test and was held back a week, he was initially upset to leave his class but knew he had to focus and keep on plugging away. The hell week was nerve racking! Tests almost every day; many times they would learn the info. in the AM and test after lunch. Then, they were given about 6 days without academic tests until the 2 final Big Ones! One is on a Thursday, the week before graduation. If they pass that, they take another on Monday (before graduation) and usually pass. Eleven out of about 30 tapped the first time and had to take it again after lunch. Three did not pass and were put in with the class behind them. They are only given one more chance to pass the test. He studied day and night--friends teased him about over studying, but in the end it worked out for him. There are close to 1,000 pages of info. they need to be familiar with and your really can not focus on specific areas. He just kept on reading and making flash cards every spare moment he had for the last 2 tests. The Chief at the graduation ceremony was wonderful; but he reiterated over and over again how these sailors could not wait to get out of MA School--it is very intense and has more rules/restrictions compared to other A Schools. It has to do with the nature of the job. Please feel free to contact me with any questions while it is all fresh in my mind :) Good luck to all the young men and women in San Antonio--they will e just fine.

TexanMomShip13Div333- have you heard if your son did with the OC Spray? I hope it went as well as it could.

Nancyship04div283 - thank you for the information.  Right now my son tells me his is bored and I can't understand why. Reading the break down on A school, it seems that there is a lot going on.  I am waiting to see how OC goes today.  Hope that he will not have to do it again.

I believe my son will be graduating on Nov 8th and he just received his duty station.

Congrats on you son's graduation!

TexanMom - My son is graduating this Friday too.  He has really enjoyed MA training.  He has mixed emotions right now.  He is looking forward to coming home but will miss his friends in A School.  They really become close and help each other through the training.  He was determined to make it through the OC Spray so he wouldn't have to do it again.  They do help them through it and they are allowed to give their phone to someone to take pictures.  Like GiaMarie said, he was a new man after that.  You are blessed to be so close.  Good luck to your Sailor!  He'll do great!
