Welcome to everyone who has joined. We'd love to hear your stories about your NFO.
My son graduated in 2004, was winged in 2006, has been on one deployment, and was recently selected for Test Pilot School- yes they take NFO's! It's been an exciting and sometimes emotional few years.
Please tell us a little about yourself and your NFO. If you have questions about training, deployment, or anything else, please ask. There will be several members with experience to help out the newbies.

Hey, Kris - great to hear from you.I've got some students coming in, so will write more later. We can do an Illinois-Wisconsin get together for sure.

AnnfromLouisiana: My experience is about like Kris'. I used the specially marked service boxes for priority. You can have them delivered to your house free of charge. they come in a variety of sizes and are flat rate, regardless of destination, as long as you are using an AP or FPO address.

These are also a few dollars cheaper than the other priority boxes. Mine got out to the carrier any where from one week (unusual) to 2 weeks, with an average of 10 days. They really do try to get our kids that mail!

My DS is on his first deployment. Can anyone tell me approximately how long packages/mail take to make it aboard a carrier? Thanks for any info.

Marianne I would think our DS's probably have crossed paths too. My DS is pretty sure he'll be going back to Norfolk as an instructor when his deployment ends. He could go to Fallon but chose Norfolk. He really would love to stay in CA but no slots are available. He loved CA way more than he ever imagined he would especially San Diego. But he loves Norfolk too so he'll be happy. Of course as we know everything I said above could change. Haha.

Glad to see so many newer people and additions to the Hawkeye community. My DS did initial flight training in P'Cola and then went up to Norfolk for NFO and winging. It seems to change around these days. That's the Navy! We all get used to it at some point (or not). Of course, he winged in 2011, so that's a while ago and our experience may be outdated.

It's one of the smallest groups in the Navy; there were only 6 in his winging class and about 40 that whole year . Several stayed in Norfolk and one went to Point Mugu. Of course, my guy opted for 3 yr. in Japan! And everyone says the middle child is the "easy" one!

He loved Virginia and was offered a slot there when he got back from deployment, but (as I've undoubtedly said before) opted to take Fallon instead. Since he's an instructor, he actually spends  a lot of time in both VA and CA.

My Hawkeye NFO just deployed last week for the first time. Not sure what has changed since his training. He was in P'cola from 8/11 through 10/12. He moved to Norfolk for Hawkeye training and was there from 10/12 through 10/13. At that time Hawkeye NFO's didn't wing until they were almost finished training in Norfolk. He winged 5/13 and was assigned to his squadron at that time. His training went pretty quickly the only wait he ever had was three months between graduation/commissioning and reporting to P'cola. He moved to Point Mugu, CA 10/13 and has been there ever since. The first year was more training at Fallon, Alaska, Key West and on the carrier. He was promoted to Lt. in May and moved up to the center seat which is mission commander. His experience has been fabulous and he loves his job. The Hawkeye community is awesome.

Yep, he'll be going to Norfolk after winging.

Well you know the Navy - nothing stays the same.  My NFO winged last summer at Pensacola.  I can't remember if he started his E2 training there or not but I do remember that he had to get to Norfolk pretty fast (and then sit and wait).  Part of it was because he had finished his training after the deadline for winging that month and had to wait another month for the ceremony.  But he did get Survivor training in between end of training and winging and then quick trip to report to Norfolk.

Comment by JediGrey on January 26, 2016 at 4:39pm

Mine just started E2 yesterday.  So far they haven't been told anything about leaving Pensacola. Do they continue training elsewhere after winging? Norfolk would be good. We have lots of relatives in that area. At least I know someone would feed him every now and then.

On the EP3 PLATFORM, but flies in the E2 all the time. They have to know each other. FALLON is a very small world, only 3 hrs from our home so we visit frequently :)
