JC: Lots of elk here in AZ. Most think it's all desert, but we have lots of very high mountain ranges (12,000 ft). Lots of skiing in the winter....I'm 30 miles away from a 10,000 ski resort. My brother hunts for everything. Deer, elk, javalina, qaile, dove, rabbit. Sometimes in the spring the bears come down out of the mountains. That's always interesting.

I was out all day, busy with my other life--the one going on outside of N4M, and I find out we're taking a roadtrip and I'm bring an ingredient for margaritas! I really am taking a road trip. We're leaving on the 23rd for Norfolk. Our son needs help moving all his stuff out of storage to Great Lakes. I am wondering what he has that's so valuable that he needs to rent a u-haul for his pickup AND have his mom and dad bring the van. Since he's been deployed for a year, I don't remember exactly what was in his apartment in Norfolk. I also suspect that it's cheaper to not move stuff and buy new! However, I'm not going to argue because it's a wonderful excuse to be in Norfolk and Virginia Beach again! Unfortunately, our trip will be too early to meet all of you! I could be a rest stop in Illinois on I-80 and I-74 though.

I'm the DD! Love to drive and navigate.
Can't wait for the upcoming Tiger Cruise. I'll be driving through Texas, Arkansas and Georgia in late March/early April.
Just got home from running some errands, had to turn the A/C on in the car. I keep looking on my doorstep and no one's there......

Hi, Sherri, check out the GM Moms group. You'll get lots of answers there about schooling and having a GM in the family. My GM son is staying with John and Yvonne--have your daughter connect with them. Your daughter could get first hand info from my son.

Hi Sherri,

Welcome to the group. We have a lot of fun talking, laughing, and sharing together here. Yvonne and I don't "technically" have any kids in the Navy, but we have a home away from home in Virginia Beach and minister to sailors from this area in our home. If your daughter and her husband want a good home cooked meal or a place to fellowship we'd love to have them participate in our activities.

Oh, I almost forgot, not that the Civil War may interest you ladies that much, but the Monior and the Merrimack "Ironclads" had their big battle here in Chesapeake Bay.

The biggest attraction here is the history.

If you're into Civil War history this is where it happened! Fort Monroe which is about 5 minutes away from Norfolk Naval Station has a museum where President Lincoln met with Grant during the last years of the war to plan strategy. It is also where Jefferson Davis was imprisoned after the war.

Depending on when you come, March 14 and 15th there is a Civil War Reenactment of the Penninsula Campaign at the Endview Plantation in Yorktown. We always take a group of servicemen to that for the whole day. It's an awesome experience! (Bring a coat it can be pretty cold for that one; but well worth it).

The Jamestown Settlement is the actual place that you learn about when you're in elementary school! The buildings are replicas of the originals and the parks' film before hand is really interesting.

Almost every major Civil War battle that was fought in the mid atlantic east was fought between Norfolk and Washington DC (about a 3 hour drive).

I've been to Norfolk five times! I never run out of things to do. Take the base tour at least once. Go see Virginia Beach, Fort Henry, and the lighthouse. If you go to Williamsburg on the Colonial Parkway is also Yorktown and Jamestown--full of history! There's an art museum in Norfolk that I've never gotten to. Smithfield is across a bridge--famous for Smithfield hams. I've heard there's a good museum there, too, but we always run out of time. We've been there in March, cool and blustery at times, but sunny a lot. July is hot, hot, hot and humid. I believe rainy and cold at times, but we've just never experienced that. Maybe this trip--we're leaving the 23rd to drive there to help our son move. We won't get everything seen this trip either. Just have fun!!!
