Ah! Didn't know that about itnot being on his ship. Many have the aqccouts anyway and check at other places when they are in port or on their laptops or blackberry's, etc.

Yes, Facebook is like Myspace. But I prefer Facebook because the advertisements that come up are not as objectionable on Facebook (personal preference I guess).

I've got a suggestion for you that you might like to try...

If you want to have a regular update from your sons and daughters get an account on Facebook. Almost all of the servicemen and women we know are on there and they seem to enjoy maintaining their presence with pictures and comments and all sorts of stuff. The remarks are usually very brief and seems to be the style they like the best (rather tahn long complicated emails).

Most ships limit the amount of time sailors can spend on the shipboard computers. And many times a ship's receiving or sending capability is down depending on where they are and what kind of activities they are involved in. In other words, it may not be your son or daughter who isn't trying to communicate.

Is the Gateway on Little Creek new? We've stayed at the Navy Lodge there, but in 2006 there wasn't a Gateway Inn. You have to show picture ID's to get on base. My husband has a retired DOD card, so if he's with us, they just way us in--I call it the magic card. Once my daughter and I were there to visit my son without him, and we got picked to have the van searched at the gate. LOL I stood and talked to the chief in charge while the newbees had to search. He was from Illinois so we had a great time visiting. My daughter thought it was great--she was 22 and enjoyed every minute! I love the Navy Lodge at Little Creek!

I meant to say she's going to retire in July. She wishes she was retired!

My mother-in-law, sister-in-law, kids, and grandkids all live in Tucson. Since I'm in cold Rock Island, IL, I have a place to stay! Don't tempt me! We are planning a trip in July, not the best time for Tucson, but my s-i-l is retired from Pima County, so we're going for the party.

75 here in Tucson today. Swimming Pool, HOMEMADE margaritas, fresh homemade salsa & chips, fondue and wine. Suntan lotion. BBQ this afternoon.....any takers?

Karen, my sympathies! Living with a chief--yow! :)

My son called last night and said he'd gone to The Melting Pot for dinner, a fondue restaurant. He loved it, but the bill for two was $109, and I'm guessing there wasn't a lot of drinks included. He said it was expensive, but he enjoyed a new experience. My husband and I will be driving to Norfolk the end of the month, so we might have to go there.

Teri, I didn't do exactly that, but I've been in trouble with my son for forwarding something one time that I shouldn't have that he got in trouble for. Another time I didn't get in trouble--another sailor "borrowed" his car when he was deployed. I started getting parking tickets from NYC and when he got back he discovered the clutch was damaged. I was furious that a friend of a friend basically stole his car keys and car. I found out the sailor's name and what ship he was on and emailed the ship's commander. I got a very terse reply--"We will get to the bottom of this, ma'am." Then the legal dept started emailing me. I could have filed charges, but I think the Navy probably ruined the kid's day. He had to pay the $200 of fines, plus I got a check for the clutch--it was a high performance clutch, so $900. That's the benefit of having the car in your sailor's and your name because Andy wasn't willing to cause problems. I was!
