if your education fund is a 529 plan, you can use the funds for any type of higher education classes, with one stipulation that the courses must be through a school that is on the list for FAFSA.  I just checked into using the remaining 529 plan money for our middle son who wants to take classes to become a Certified Financial Planner.  But the school is not listed as qualilfies for 529 fund money. so we left the fund alone and grand kids will have some college money someday.

Elizabeth - I was a little worried about Turbo Tax, just because we expected my son to owe on taxes, so today I redid them on the free H & R block site for Federal EZ form and they came out exactly the same, so I think Turbo tax is fine.

Are you still claiming your son as a dependent? or is he now claiming himself?  we can still claim him for last year, so he doesn't get that benefit yet or he'd have a lot a good return.  OH well, at least he really doesn't owe like we thought he would.

Connie - you know, I am not sure about that tax stuff for the ESA and savings bonds.  I asked American Century Investments when I was trying to close the account (I actualy couldn't since the MIL was the custodial on it, so she had to) and they said it was the Unif. Tran. Min. Act of AZ so the earnings weren't taxed but the dividends were.  On the U.S. Savings bonds, I just don't know.  We probably should look on the IRS web site or send a message to ask that question and see what they say.  I am thinking about holding onto the savings bonds anyway so that down the road when the kids need a little help, are maybe struggling, etc., they will have that little bit to tide them over.

Aaronsgirl- I moved to South Carolina a month ago, about 1.5 hours away. Thanks for the help!

Waitinfor- I can't believe he actually got a flight out of Chicago with this crazy weather! He won't have liberty until the weekends.. Friday after 1600 (4pm) until midnight. Saturday until midnight. And Sunday until midnight. He'll have to be in uniform at all times, can't drive a car, and cannot consume alcohol. As for weekdays, he'll probably be done around 1600, but during phase 1 will not be able to leave base. Check out the discussion in this group: "Your Sailor's Schedule Upon Arrival at GC" It has a great explanation of all of the phases and the schooling. :)

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. :)

P.S. How are you so lucky that you'd get to go see him tomorrow?

Hey Kat, when you mentioned cashing in your son's college savings account, that made me wonder ...I have an ESA (education savings account) for my son, plus US savings bonds that were earkmarked for college ... do you (or anyone else) know if my son will be able to use this $ for things like buying a new laptop, taking college courses between or during deployments, etc, without getting a tax penalty, since he's not a college student.I mean, technically it would be for education expenses, and we'd be able to show receipts. I hate for him to cash in his account and bonds and get hit with a penalty ... would it be better to just hang on to the $ until/maybe he uses it for something like a master's degree (which I kinda think might not happen). Anybody run into this situation before?

Waitinfor, did he just leave GL this morning at 6:00 am out of O'Hare?  If so, he was with my son who is going to be an MM.  Don't think they have any liberty as of yet.  While they may have some days without a lot to do, I don't think they called it liberty but not exactly sure.  They do have a few days of indoc to take care of as well.

haha yay! I'll get the real-live Emily! Hopefully atleast. bummer you can't come up though! You'll have to tell me what your summer/college plans are then when you figure those out. We will meet one day, even if we're on opposite sides of the earth!

My son just called and he is sooooo happy.  Just got done with Turbo Tax and he is getting back over $900. in federal taxes and only owes $20.00 to our state taxes.  Can you ever really make a mistake with Turbo Tax or is it pretty fool proof?  (Not calling him a fool but this is first time he has done taxes on his own.)

Hello! My boyfriend is arriving in Charleston today, he will be an ET, does anyone know if and how I can go see him on base tomorrow during his liberty? Thanks!

Bigmama - I went to GC last Memorial day & it was a good time to visit, the weather was great & everything wasnt to overly crowded.  My son was in Power School at the time, I flew in Saturday &flew out Tuesday, his instructor even let him take an extra longer lunch to bring me to the airport on that tuesday.

Zazzws - that was an excellent summerization & so far from what I've heard from my son exactly the way it is.
