Hi Mary,
I've included a link below to the most used website for former Navy nucs to find employment. The job prospects for former nucs after their enlistment are excellent. To clarify one thing though, without an engineering degree, he wouldn't be qualified to be a "nuclear engineer". There is a lot of misleading info out there about how nucs can get college credit for their nuclear training. They can indeed get lots of college credit towards a degree in nuclear technology, and the degree will give them a little bit of an advantage in the employment market - the nuclear training will not go far at all though towards an actual engineering degree. The difference between the two in starting salary is 15-20K a year, with a larger gap as more experience is obtained. Separated nucs are qualified to be nuclear plant operators, with some additional training with the utility, and also as reactor operators, which is a different (and higher paying) job. ETs (like Shelli) will have an easier time qualifying for RO jobs, but MMs and EMs can qualify also. All can work in maintenance and repair on nuclear plants, in their particular areas, and MMs who qualify in the Navy as ELTs (about 25% do) can also find employment in chemistry and radiological controls (radcon) fields. Radcon especially can get a lot of work support plant outages, when maintenance and repair work happens. The Navy's shipyards are also always hiring ex-nucs, especially for radcon. There are also plenty of job opportunities outside of the nuclear field, and they can also go to sea as civilians in the merchant marine, which can also be extremely lucrative.

Bunker, That is too funny. You never know, you may see Diego one day. We live in the country now, moved from the city five years ago and he loves it. Loves working on a horse farm and doing all the things that go with it. The kids were in 4-H and do horses for a couple of years. As a matter of fact, D and some friends just left to go to a country concert. Many great country artists are playing Michigan today! I am a pushover too.............better to have them at home so we know where they are. I prefer it that way as so does hubby. He loves having the friends over!

Sharon, my younger son (going to school in OK) has made our home a "pit stop" for his buds coming out to see the wild "West Coast" - so tell Diego he can stop by too. My son is pretty slick. He was going back to OK to take summer classes but convinced me that he needed to stay here to chaperon his friends around The City (San Fran). Ha ha. I fell for it hook, line and sinker. Just brand me MPM (mushy pushover mom).

Thanks Ladies, we are very proud and know he will do well in the Navy.

@Jeanne, there are many in the school that did the same thing. Diego knew he had to do well in HS because of what he wanted to do for his future.

@ Bunker, He will love having so many "Navy Aunts." He is a great kid, never causing us any problems. We are very blessed.

@Kathy, Thank you so much. After the academy and NROTC stuff, he is very determined to keep on track and is already talking about re-applying next year. He will see how "Nuke" goes and then make any decisions. He has a good head on his shoulders and very mature. Thanks again!

Sharon! I love hearing that Diego is doing well. It's almost like hearing that your nephew is doing well. I guess he is our "Navy" nephew - poor guy, with all these Navy aunts, how can he ever do anything wrong? Assuming he gets a chance to do anything at all.

Our son, Diego graduated from High School with High Honors on Sunday. He received a Commendation for being in the DEP from the Recruiting Office, the US Marine Scholastic Excellence Award. There were a couple of other things too, but didn't have anything to do with the military. He had no idea he was going to receive them, the students don't know what awards they will receive until Honors Convocation night. Graduation Day was a truly proud day for us. We took photos (in the rain) and then came back to our house for a great afternoon with my sister and her boys as well as son's girlfriend's family. It was an awesome day together. Now, we are going to enjoy the summer before he goes off to BC on 21 September. He will be working on some farms to earn some spending money and enjoy as much as he can before he leaves. I can say I am one proud mama!

My son should have arrived today (or yesterday) but we have not heard from him. He doesn't have his cell phone yet. Are pay phones accessible?
