My son is on deployment on the USS Miami. His sub is stationed in Groton, Ct. He's called from Scotland and London. He's also been to Oslo, Norway twice. He is getting to go to amazing places.

Laurie--while I wouldn't recommend it as a first choice, our sailor bought his car at GC through Craigslist. It was used from another navy personnel. Also, he can check with legal department at no cost before considering a contract. His car payments and insurance come out twice a month from Navy Credit Union and USAA.

Bea, that is priceless.

... and I love the cleaned up language, LOL.

When we were in Hawaii visiting our son, we asked him what was one of the harder things that he had to do. He, a junior officer on a sub, said it was really hard when one of the guys that he "supervises", he prefers to think in terms of working together, gets a dear john letter, email or phone call. He is just 25 and barely older than many of the enlisted guys. So he puts on his "big brother" hat and tells them the following - I am cleaning up the language at bit here for our sensitive ears - have your son substitute everything in parentheses with the appropriate sailor guy talk:
"Tell that (sweet young thing) to take a (flying) hike. Let her (make nice) with the whoever is handy. Your are a (frigging) nuke - that means you got a future whether you re-up or go civilian. There are a lot of (lovely ladies) out there. She'll be back soon enough when she see her girlfriends standing in line to help you forget. If you take her back, we'll beat the (frigging) daylights out of you."
Apparently this makes them feel better.

Laurie: There is a prayer wall, and a Christian Chat group where you can post prayers. You have my heart. I have a 'silent' type as well. Please know that you are all in my prayers.
Kate - hang in here. We had a little 'sharing' a while back about how these NUKE's are too smart to study. If you want, go back a bit it is funny to read. We all seemed to have the same kid. Trust that he is in a good spot, and that there are plenty of folks watching over him. Even if he isn't aware of it. You are very lucky that he is talking with you. Ours hardly called at all.

Bea your idea bout the monkey's is funny. I saw one in K-Mart yesterday they are different colors. Do any of you remember 'One of these days, you're gunna grow up and have kids of your own. . . : I'd love one of those - - -

Remember those monkey dolls? Some creative mom should design a little Nukie - a smart-as-a-whip stubborn little thing who can casually forget about studying but will ace the exam anyway (one that you would like to choke sometimes) and a companion Nervous Nuke Mommy - remember the cartoon Cathy - an older, slightly plumped version would be good. We can yell at the Nukie "Why did you make me worry like that? Do you know I haven't slept in days, sick in my stomach?" and look at the Nuke Mommy "Patience. He'll handle it. Don't worry. It's gonna be OK." I would buy a set. We have 774 members. This could be a real money maker.... sorry, I don't know how to make one of those things.
Our precious babies.

Laurie, Every base, command and ship has a COB (chaplin on board). Your son needs some one to talk to about the cancelled wedding. His roommates and fellow sailors will do everything they can to get him to graduation. But guys don't want to tell each other they are depressed. So have him find his favorite Chief and or COB. I don't rememeber if he's in SC or NY but there are always people to help him get through school and through the personal problems that occur.
champsmom, So glad to hear that your son passed. I've found that the guys don't like to share down thoughts with each other, so they tell us all the worries they have. They are usually just off loading to Mom. They are counting on you to be encouraging and to tell them they can do anything if they put their minds to it. Kind of like when they were in grade school.

Champsmom, Thank you for letting us know the good news!!!! Boy, those kids can put us on "worry alert", can't they??? Great way to start the day with GOOD news!!
