Hi Joy! My son lived in a nice apartment on Greenwood Road. I'll ask him the name. He got a one-bedroom with no room mate because he likes to go to bed early and it's hard to find a teenage roomie the same.

I put a long post with some ideas on furnishing an apartment for only six months; if you'll look on the discussion group "Wedding Shower Plans..." My post is dated Oct. 23.

Cassandra S. Its been many years since I was a Navy wife, but I remember Nuke school very well. I also talked to some wives when my son was in Goose Creek. So here are my suggestions. First, keep plenty of snacks in the house (you will get housing). When the guys come up for air they are usually hungry. Don't plan meals. I know you want him the eat well, but they never make it for a planned meal. I always made things that could be re-heated or kept on the stove. I liked stews, soups or sandwiches. Also, encourage him to invite his fellow sailors over on the weekends. That gives him and his friends a chance to de-stress with people who understand. Finally, for your sanity, I would suggest you look for a part time job. It gets you out of the house and gives you a chance to talk to people who are not under stress. I use to use the extra money to buy my husband little gifts or extras. Good luck down in Groose Creek and if you ever need anything, please contact this old Navy wife.

I affirm everything Kathleen said below... power school is nothing but study and prototype is nothing but "labs" (practicing what they've learned). Just be there and don't try to coach too much from the stands.

Working out relieved alot of my son's stress. Suggest your kid take a run or even dance! In an effort to help, I sent 4 Nerf guns with extra darts... Son and friends had a great time having shoot-outs in the rooms and walkways! They're still just boys...

ALWAYS say "We are so proud of you, just for becoming a sailor. If you want to make top grades, that's a goal you've set for yourself (and a noble one); but, we won't be disappointed or love you less if you don't get honors. We know how smart you are and no matter what you decide to do in the Navy, we will always love you and be proud of you."

My sons won't get to come home for Thanksgiving, but they will both make it for Christmas. My youngest is stationed in Groton on the USS Miami. I love to go there in the summer or late spring. It is a short drive from there to Newport, RI. In the summer the mansions of Newport are open to the public. They are beautiful and something different to do for an afternoon.

Congratulations, Becca! For those of us blessed enough to be at our sailor's PIR, it's a warm, lasting memory of love and pride. Hope you can make it! KS.

"Official" Navy Day is October 13 (birthday of the USN in 1775). But some locales observe it on other days. Where would this be Monique?

Sherry, you can see my son receiving his NNPTC diploma on my page... post a picture of Sean's nuke graduation if you have one! Prototype is different, but very "hands on," so the guys like it (tools and dirt, they never change).

Congratulations!!!
