Yes, the group is really really great--I've learned so much, plus just knowing that there are other families going through this, priceless. Nancy Jo, what you describe is hilarious, also sort of what we've experienced during Daughter's training--as in, "Wow, this stuff is so hard!", we ask, "What kind of stuff?" (not any specifics, just like "is it math?"), she'd answer: "I can't tell you." We will still love to go on the ship, but I know from tours of other ships that it's very far down and very hot. Plus, claustrophobic. Fortunately, not for her!
Somebody mentioned the Friends and Family cruise. My son didn't want me on the Tiger Cruise for some weird reason but after they get back from deployment and things settle down they sometimes offer the F&F cruise. I did do that. We go out for a day and get the air show and weapons demo, they have fun activities in the hangar bay, and we got to tour the ship. When it started the captain made a speech and told the sailors to show their guests everything. But it turns out when my son and I (my g-son was also along) got down 7 decks to the area where nukes dwell, we stood in the hall and he said "That's my office. Can't go in there." Pointed to berthing. "That's where we sleep. Can't go in there. People are sleeping." Where's the engine room? "Down there. Can't go in there." So we ended up looking at everything else but where he worked. But it was OK. Fascinating! Go if you get the chance.
Lack of communication is always tough and if your sailor doesn't communicate well to start with it can get really long. That's why this group is so great.
Yes, you can say which ship your sailor is on - just no discussing ship movement! There is a good chance she could end up in Norfolk since they have the most carriers stationed there. But anything could happen!
Oh good about WhatsApp--we use it when we're not in the country, it's great. It sounds like it's OK to say here which ship our kids are on--is that correct? She told us she'll get her orders by the end of Prototype--also, her home port. We can't wait! And hope it's (sort of) near us in NY.
Good Morning and Happy Wednesday!
SailorsLIMom - when B was in Norfolk he took us on a tour of the Truman - it was awesome! If you get the opportunity for a tour definitely take it. In addition to Tiger Cruises they also do Family Day on carriers. They also do various demonstrations.
A good app to use when they are deployed is "WhatsApp". And like JayDee said, it will depend on what type of communicator your sailor is...B has always been a good communicator.
Anmarie - the 3 month deployment isn't set in stone. They are just trying to change things up so we (our military) isn't so predictable.
SailorsLImom ,let us know where your girl lands. One never knows but she end up on my daughter's carrier
Thank you so much! Those answers really help, although learning that we can't cellphone during deployments--which makes PERFECT sense--is disappointing. I guess I'd envisioned it sort of like floating college, even after all this time. lol The Tiger Cruise sounds great. Can't wait. So glad we have traveling to take up our time now that my husband retired but boy, I'll miss those almost-daily chats, even if a lot of it is "Mom, I was asleep when you called..."
Thank you guys for the information about deployment. I had not idea that air craft carriers had shortened their deployment to 3 months. What a relief!
SailorsLIMom, we are in "the same boat" so to speak. lol. My son is due to grad Feb. 22 although he said a lot of them are not all qualified. He said he may have to stay after graduation to complete all the qualifications.
Love this group! Thank you all for your help.
SailorsLIMom you can visit them when they're in port. If you're lucky you'll get a tour of the carrier (my daughter never wanted to do that for fear she'd be seen and put to work). I was able to do a Tiger Cruise. At the ships discretion, they can decide to do a Tiger Cruise when they return from deployment. In my case, I flew down to meet them in Jacksonville then cruised up to Norfolk with them. BEST 3 days ever. It was summer and I sweated off 9# while on the ship (the berthing area was nice and cool). They even put on a private air show and weapons demonstration for us. It was pretty cool to be on the "ship" side during homecoming. All the moms waiting on the dock were posting pictures of us coming in, so I posted back pictures of them waiting for us. :)
Okay, sorry, that was long. We could not facetime with our daughter. I can tell you that there isn't any cell service when you're out at sea. We weren't that far out on the Tiger Cruise and there wasn't service. Any kind of cell phone ping could tip off the ships location. That actually happened on my friends daughters ship. The consequences included missile lock on their ship and some very scary moments.
As B'sMom mentioned they are shaking up deployment schedules so you never know.
JayDee659 and BsNukeMom, your info about contact with our sailors after deployment is SO welcome! Our daughter will finish at Ballston Spa at the end of February, will get her orders by then, she says. I have the most basic questions. One, can we visit them when they're in port? Two. what are the "Tiger Cruises" some folks have mentioned here? Three, is there any "average" length of time that they're gone for? Four, can you Facetime (or some app that's more secure) with them while they're on the ship? I'll follow up with the defensenews ref, thank you BsNukeMom. Five--how do you stand it? ;/ Thank you!
