My daughter left yesterday 10-15-13 finally received the phone call at 0115 this morning, I can't stop crying not sure if its because I miss her so much or because now I have to clean up her room from trying to pack in a hurry. She packed for the hotel, than packed stuff to bring to PIR and than A school packed. How do you get over not knowing where or how they are?

It's 7am and I just recived a call from my son . Oh it was so good to hear his voice. I could not stop talking and crying at the same time, he sounded a little tired but he said he is doing well. I haven't recived my letter yet , but he told me that his PIR will be on the 27th. Whooo hoooo. Time to start making reservations.

My son never throws anything out, just ask his father. It'll be interesting to find out when he writes or calls again.

Thanks Helen, I was going to suggest callsforrecruits as well. What a wonderful thing he is doing! I completlety understand where you are coming from, I have never felt so brain dead in my life... I feel like a thousand things are running through my mind and I cant grasp at one to focus on it... :)

Thank you to everyone who helped me figure out the phone cards.  I am hopeful that my brain will return to normal once my son leaves for bootcamp!  For the benefit of anyone who might be as brain dead as I am, I thought I’d summarize everything I’ve learned about phone cards in the past few days.

The Navy RTC recommends that your SR bring a phone card.  See the Navy’s Family Guide:  http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/pdfs/FamilyGuide.pdf.  It says that most recruits will make 3 calls durin bootcamp.

There are two types of prepaid calling cards – those that can be used on any phone and those that must be used with a certain cell phone “cell phone cards”).  Your SR needs the type that can be used on any phone.  A domestic card should suffice unless your SR will be calling an international location.

There are numerous retailers that carry these card including CVS, Rite-Aid, Star Market, and Walmart.  At CVS, both types of cards are displayed on the same rack as other gift cards.  At Walmart, the “any phone cards” (which you want) are located near the check-out registers.   The “cell phone cards” (which you do not want) are in the Electronics Department.

If you cannot locate appropriate cards or cannot afford to purchase them, go to http://callsforrecruits.org/.  Calls for Recruits is run by a Navy vet whose son is also in the Navy.  He will e-mail you eight 20-minute cards, with instructions to share two cards with fellow recruits who do not have calling cards.  He does not charge for this generous service, which is provided by private donations.

After you purchase your cards, follow the directions to activate it and have your SR make a practice call or two.  Also, advise your SR to protect it while at bootcamp, since they are a desirable item.

So I have not commented yet because it has been such a whirlwind getting my son ready to leave. I have just been reading everything trying to learn all this Navy stuff. However, today is the day and so I want to say hello. My sweet boy is swearing in again this morning and I am missing it :( My other son is home sick, so I am stuck. Luckily the grandparents are going and they promised lots of pictures! I am so excited for him and so very proud! Now the wait begins for the call!

we were told they have four options...keep it there, send it home, donate it or throw away. i dont know if this is totally true but that was what the recruiter said. hope that helps!

Got my sons box yesterday. No sneakers, jeans or underwear? Can he use his own stuff, I didn't think so?
