Ok if a person is active for all eight years would that mean 4 years sea and 3 years shore? Im a little confused about the sea\shore rotation. And what if a person is active for 4 years and reserved for 4years? How would that apply then?

PSD is personnel support activity detachment. basically its a office where members get their pay processed and other things.  the govt was trying to put more civilan contractors in them, but are now moving back to using PSs.

if your married or have dependents, you are limited to where you can go for your first time. typically you cant go over seas, but you still can be stationed on a ship, but to make it easier, they may work with you to have you shore based, but for your first command, its what the navy needs.

typical sea/shore rotation is 48 months sea, 36 months shore.

Thanks for the response. What is a psd? And if they see that your married or have dependents do they try their best to give a person a shore based command. And how long does a shore command and sea command last??

just depends on the command that the sailor is attached to weather they will be at sea a lot or not. im with a squadron and dont see any sea time, some PSs are on ships and may be out for months at a time.

 

advancement is pretty open still as far as i can tell. i made E4 last september, my first time up and only being in for 5 months, and im up for E5 next month, all that ive heard is PSs is pretty open just because the navy is trying to put more PSs at PSDs now.. exams are in september and march

Thank you for the response, Beath.  My sailor did update me on the exam schedule....good to know that he will already be able to take the exam in Sep.

Hey Flydown-

My son heard from another sailor that rental cars are available at base for only $15/weekend?  Is this true?  any info?  That just seems TOO good to be true...I could see 15/day, more likely?  Also heard that PS is a pretty closed rate...slow advancement these days....is it still 12 months TIR from E-3 to E-4?  Exams still in Oct and Mar?

not sure about the liberty on presidents day weekend, i wasnt there for any holidays, but im sure its the same where you have to be there for a while and "earn" your liberties, green sticker.

and just depends on how long he will be there, i dont recommend taking anything extra or buying anything because then its on you to ship/move everything home. plus usually your not there for THAT long, id honestly just say wait and get the guitar or whatever else after a school

Hey my sailor will get there on Saturday do you know if they will allow overnight liberty for presidents day weekend
