OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

Is it a different last name from getting married or something or was it just spelled wrong? I would bring whatever you have just to play it safe :)

Oh and my name is different than the one my son put on the PIR list..I told him about this but I'm afraid he won't remember! Can I call somewhere and relay this information? Should I bring other forms of ID, like a birth certificate, marriage cert, etc., just in case?

Comment by Delaware Mom ( Ship 03 Div 123) on March 17, 2013 at 9:14am

I have a Sailor AND a few questions. My son only mentioned bringing his laptop, his cellphone and cash on a money card. What else should I bring that he hasn't thought of?

Good Morning!  Hoping that some SRs/sailors get calls home today ...and maybe you will get some Captains Cup results!

Still no word on how all did in the Captains Cup today?

Leigh,

You can go to www.pirgifts.com .  There is a short video there that explains the history of challenge coins and Craig also sells them at that site.  He can ship to your hotel for PIR to make sure you receive it to give to your Sailor!

Friends,

"Create in me a clean heart, O God,

and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Do not cast me away from Your presence,

and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Your Salvation,

and uphold me by Your generous Spirit."

beachlover:  You can find Craig under the MEMBERS tab up top.  He is the one in Aurora CO.  You can send him a friend request, and mention in that request (add a message) that you would like info on the coins.

ELiana:  Sometimes they can make calls again before PIR...they usually can't just call when they want to, but may get more opportunity.  My son called again when they had a pizza party on Tues night before his PIR.
