OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends".

diannep, Wouldn't even think about trying to change it to the 15th. I can't even imagine the wrath of 800 (or more), mothers, wives, fiances, girlfriends, etc. I would live in fear the rest of my days.

Rolling laughter

lavendergrl:  Usually just once a week (Mondays) in the beginning...sometimes they are allowed to mail more often later in bootcamp.

Comment by lavendergrl8 on March 13, 2013 at 8:22am

wow- how oftern can they send their mail? thx

Comment by diannep on March 13, 2013 at 8:14am

CourtRenee:  The mail is held from them for the first two weeks they are there normally...until the Recruit Mail Petty Officer is trained to handle the mail (federal regulations).  They normally receive this held mail on a Sunday, but if the SR is trained earlier, they could receive it before then.  Once that mail is received, they receive mail M-F.  The mail facility at RTC is staffed with only about 2-3 people so it is hard to keep up with all of the mail that comes in there.  Average 5,000 SRs are on base at one time!

Good Morning All!

Also: I guess you ladies have about talked me into getting the challenge coins :) I guess I will get the Great Lakes Navy, what others do you all recommend?
Comment by CourtRenee on March 13, 2013 at 12:20am
Ok so I have a question... just because we're not getting letters, if I have sent a few is my sailor able to read these? or does he have to wait however long ( until they are 'allowed') to read them?!
