joyce:  Only those sailors who had to repeat BattleStations the NIGHT BEFORE PIR will be in the balcony.  If they do it before then, they march with their division or have their regular PIR duties.  Even some who do BattleStations makeup the night before PIR have managed in the past to still march with their division, even after being up all night.

Alright you guys - someone here just was talking about photos of the PIR that get posted to a FB page.  What is the name of the FB page?  Where do I find it?

Here is some info that should help you understand the performing divisions a little better. The Ship staff division which it sounds like this PIR group has should come in together before PIR and pose for pics. None of the performing divisions march in like the other divisions but most families still see them come in at some point. You can write your recruit and ask them what they will be doing during the ceremony and where the best place to see them will be. 

Performing divisions info:

There are actually three different performing divisions that rotate. One is a working group called ships staff and they work behind the scenes with VIP's and as greeters, sideboys and body snatchers. Sideboys form a Receiving line for the VIP's to enter through at the start of the ceremony. Body snatchers walk up and down the isles of sailors and make eye contact and even speak to the sailors to make sure they are not about to pass out. They often lock their knees because they have to stand in one spot for such a long time. If they lock their knees it can cut off the blood flow and cause them to faint. Of course the sailor behind them does their best to catch them :) Another part of the performing divisions is the flag corp and they carry and perform with the 50 state flags during the ceremony. The third part is known as The Triple Threat. The Triple Threat is made up of the band, drill team and choir and they all perform throughout the ceremony. It is so amazing how they can pull this all off in such a short time and still accomplish all that is to be done during boot camp. They are either chosen for this division or they can volunteer for it. If they have band, flagcorps, drill team, choir, or marching experience they can volunteer. They can also be handpicked or volunteer if they have high ASVAB scores. They don't expect them to need as much time to study which gives a lot more time for practice :) Once they are in the performing DIV they may be able to try out to be a part of the Triple Threat and be in the band, choir, or drill team. I hope this helps you all understand what your recruits are doing.

Also, what if they are being honored and they have their duties to serve coffee. It doesn't add up.

I agree it does seem a bit odd. Since they also earned flags as well. Don't they get to at list get together and represent themselves? At least if they don't march maybe at the end or something. Anyone with an answer would that would be great.

Scattered yes, but behind the scenes during their own graduation. I just find that hard to believe. I don't understand why they would have to be on duty during Graduation. Isn't that what it is, Graduation. I had read that anyone who doesn't pass battle stations the first time and needs to do it again, will have to sit in the bleachers and not march in. I will be terribly upset if my son has to greet and serve coffee during his own PIR.

I know that 931, since they are staff they are scattered around during PIR.  I to thought they would have some point during PIR where they were presented. Which it doesn't sound like it. The good news is we might get some pictures before the our PIR. They take a lot of pictures and show them on the 900 group page and FB. Our group will be doing the PIR on 5/31 and 6/7 as well as ours so we have a real chance of seeing them in some of those pictures. He really works at getting pictures of the behind the scenes folks.  I will be stalking that page on 6/1. LOL
