any nicknames for A.V?
Got my letter too! Phew, felt so nic to see his writing and he didn't write anything on it either, however he did write on the out side My Family! _____ (last name) It was a special way of addressing us, either he didn't have time or it was sealed and had no other option when he realized. Maybe his div is really strict, some tough ones? He also listed his sister first on the invite list, that made her day! SO excited, we are on our way ladies we will make it!
We drove to PIR from the Navy Lodge, walking really not an option, busy roads no sidewalks etc. Call Sarge if you don't want to drive, although it is very easy from the Navy Lodge. I think it is three right turns to PIR if I remember right and coming back look for the white picket fence for your last left turn, to get you back. :)
Airport wise it is up to you. We flew into Midway (cheaper fare and better schedule for us), I don't think there is much difference between the two.
As far as weather as it gets closer I will try and keep you all updated on that one. I will just ask my son who is at A School in GL. I will just tell him he is now the weatherman for you all.
That is awesome Jenideer, I am so happy for you :-)
OK I got it off and can come!!! So have a room at the Navy Lodge, no shuttle though, should we walk? its only a mile, call Sarge for a ride? take the rental car? Also what is the weather expected to be late Sept? Cold wet? I am from Oregon so I can be well prepared if I know what to expect. And what about those ribbons? What are they and how to I get some? What else am I missing? Oh and is Ohare Aiport the best to fly into?
thanks all
rox - There is not a thing as speaking out of turn here. All the veteran moms love when the group gets cohesive. Talking about all the stuff that happens at boot camp makes it so easy for the parents that haven't a clue of what their sailor is doing. So speak up whenever you want. We welcome it.
Here is what your sailor is doing each day:

Per the coin, this is the problem. Every ship has a story. I need to get that story into a coin that is only 1 3/4 inches. When PIRGifts approached me with the idea about the coins, I accepted it since I saw so many parents buying the wrong coins. For example there are 4 ships (CA-14, CA-29, CA-136, & SSN-721) named the USS Chicago. However, only one of those ships, the SSN-721, has any meaning for the barrack (ship) in Great Lakes. I have saw many moms buy the CA-136 USS Chicago coins which has no connection. This is why I wanted to set the story straight. I wanted to give these sailors the true story.
Same as the USS Kennedy coin. So many people think that the only ship named after the Kennedy brothers (Joe, John, Bobby, & Ted) was the carrier John F. Kennedy CV-67. It wasn't. All four brothers were in the military. These new sailors need to know the history. They need to learn the Navy. Which I'll do, one coin at a time. With the Reuben James, the story isn't the performance divisions. It's about the man, and the ship. The secondary side story is the performance division. Which is what I need to reflect also. The ribbons idea is good. I will be checking it out.
I really appreciate the input. Any idea is better than no ideas. Besides, bad ideas make good stories.
It sucks being a perfectionist. But I have to make everything correct.
Rox- TY!!!
You're not speaking out of turn! You're contributing! Again TY!
You know...I never noticed that...have to go look now!
FTWL, thank you for all that you do here and the discussions you have linked to this group. You and the other veterans here are greatly appreciated!!!! <3
Here's a Ship 2 coin idea (I'm not a veteran so forgive me if I am speaking out of turn)... I clicked on the links for those crosses that were posted and that was an awesome idea. If it still is too much to capture all the different things that the 900 divisions represent, what about a picture of the ribbon they wear as part of their uniform? Aren't they the only ones in BC who wear a ribbon on their shoulder??? Just a thought. :)
