Our daughter left on September 13th and other than the initial welcome letter from the Recruit Training Command and her box of belongings we haven't heard from her yet. We have mailed several letters to her already hoping she will have something to look forward to from home as often as possible. This mom is however getting anxious to hear from her. We are so excited to know she will have PIR on November 10th and can't wait to see her. Has anyone else's loved ones have the same PIR date?

This is very important information, so please read it and abide by it!!

Public Display of Affection

In the Navy physical forms of affection such as hugs, kisses, and holding hands while in uniform are known as a "public display of affection" (PDA) and are forbidden.

There is one exception: families saying goodbye to a sailor before a deployment or greeting a sailor returning from deployment or long separation. Boot camp counts under this exception, with limits. One enthusiastic hug of greeting and a quick kiss are acceptable. French or extended kisses are not. Nor are extended hugs, hanging off your sailor, etc.

Hand-holding at any time is forbidden. There is a compromise, and I consider it to be a fairly romantic one. A sailor may offer his arm to his girlfriend/wife/mother, she lays her hand in the crook of his LEFT elbow in a formal escort-type pose. Likewise, a female sailor can take the RIGHT arm of her husband/boyfriend/father with her left hand. In a truely romantic gesture, men may lay their right hand over their lady's hand (to keep it warm, or for skin-to-skin contact). The sailor must ALWAYS have his right arm free to salute an officer or flag, should one show up.

Also, just because you aren't on base, don't assume they aren't looking. RDCs and other boot camp personnel also go to the mall, out to restaurants, to Chicago, etc, and they will be looking for new sailors breaking the rules. Some may actually be assigned this job in popular venues. Even if they run into the recruit by chance and are just out with their own family, they will report the new graduate. You won't likely see them because they will not be in uniform, but they will see you.

And no, they won't punish YOU. They will punish your sailor when s/he returns to barracks. The most common punishment is to have their liberty revoked the next day, or if the behavior is observed on the final day of liberty, new sailors can be retained for an extra week of boot camp. These are not idle threats. They actually do it.

About uniforms

Your sailors will be wearing their dress blues, not their whites, on Friday at PIR and after. If you wear something light colored, be sure to bring a lint brush for your recruit to "clean up" his or her blues. They're wool and pick up just about anything. If you are bringing a pet, bring one of those sticky-tape rollers to de-fur your sailor.

On Saturday and Sunday they will be wearing their service uniforms, which is a khaki shirt and black slacks or skirt.

They start wearing whites the weekend before Memorial Day, so you will probably see them in their whites when they come home on leave after A school.

I received this information from a seasoned N4M mom whose own recruit was in a 900 division, I think you'll find this info helpful and interesting too!

"All 900 Divs train on Ship 06, the USS Constitution. FYI: Here's an edited version of something I wrote to the 901 gals when they first signed into BC Moms:

..."Recruits are chosen for the 900 divisions based on several things such as ASVAB scores, previous ROTC or other leadership experience, musical or band experience etc. There are many non musical jobs. I would not go so far as to call them honor or elite, but there is a LOT of pride in being in a 900 Div. :-) Nothing they do during BC carries over beyond graduation though. I promise, PIR will be extra memorable for both you and your Sailor! :D

900's must work harder and more is expected of them! :) They not only have to learn everything every other BC Recruit has to learn, but they also have extra duties, as they are the division in charge of helping to run and perform in the PIR ceremony. Be aware, their time to write, especially as PIR gets closer, is sometimes short because of the extra practice time and study required. They must be good self managers and show initiative, drive and leadership."

Hope that helps the newbies understand better what your Recruits have gotten themselves into and what you can expect during and at the culmination of their 8 weeks. :)

"The PIR ceremony is conducted, with help, from the graduating 900 Div and two Jr. Divs in their 7th and 6th week of training. That's why you get a sneak peek at your Recruits in the videos and pictures posted by Moms returning from GL. :) Each incoming 900 div is assigned one of the responsibilities listed below, on a constantly rotating basis.

Ship Staff is in charge on PIR day. They greet and welcome the Officers and their distinguished guests as Sideboys, they play the role of "Body Snatcher" walking up and down the rows of Sailors, watching for and sometimes catching any Sailor about to or going down. (They lock their knees sometimes and pass out). They help the Navy Corpsmen in the back room, they Guard doors and perform a myriad of tasks behind the scenes and in front. It is their job to help make sure all goes smoothly. The Honor Guard Drill Team (they're the ones with the yellow ascots) also does a rifle performance at the beginning of the ceremony.

Flags does an incredible march perfectly timed and executed to the drum corps cadence. It is their job to present the flags for every state in the union. They are lined up by height, so the flow looks better, so your recruit will probably not get to carry their home state flag. They also honor those who have gone before by presenting the POW and MIA flags, as well as the US flag.

Triple Threat is comprised of those who are on that weeks' Jr. Rifle Drill team and all those who were chosen for their musical abilities. The Blue Jacket Choir performs the Nat'l Anthem, Anchors Aweigh (just try to get through those without a tear in your eye. I couldn't) and anything else they've been tasked with. The band plays at various time throughout the ceremony. The Drum Corps also marches and helps everyone else stay in step and keep time.

All together, it is an amazing effort, especially when you stop to consider how little time they have really had to prepare such a glorious presentation. You have every reason to be very proud of your 900 Div recruits Navy Moms!
Meet and Greet 11-11-10tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2010-10-03:1971797:Topic:42284162010-10-03T00:15:03.012ZDiana PIR 11/12/10https://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/dgarstka
Ok, lets start a discussion about who wants to do a meet and greet as well as where to have it. From what I Understand, there are two different options for where we could do M&G. Ramada is the place most people have held this event in the past, but there has't been positive words said about it ie.. dirty, smoky. Or.. we can have it anastasias. Ramada is more of a bar scene, Anastasias is more of a family type place. Lets take a poll and see who wants to have it where. I'm thinking about…

I'm thinking about 6-8pm so theres enough time for everyone to get back to their hotels before the BIG day!! There is a link to anastasias that i can post so you all can take a look at the menu. Meet and Greet will be a time for us all to get to know eachother, since we've been eachothers support system for weeks now! Let me know what you're thoughts are and we can go from there!
