While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Comment by fab5mom on October 29, 2015 at 4:02pm: I got my letter today, our SR can be picked up between 8 -9 am on Thursday and they have to be back no later than 7:30. He said they can write this Sunday and call on Saturday. That's a great idea Beth!!!

Comment by BeckyP on October 29, 2015 at 2:11pm: Katherine - seemed like we picked them up fairly early - 9 or 10 maybe and they had to be back in the evening, maybe around 6 - it gets dark there so early it's hard to remember exactly - I know it was dark when we took them back, but it gets dark there by 4 or 5 - they are on central time - which always messes this eastern time girl up!!

The details will all be in the letter. Be prepared when you go to pick them up - they all look the same!! I didn't recognize my son until he was standing right in front of me!!!

Wow 14 hours - that's a haul - we are fortunate - only 3 hours one way. It will be well worth it!

Comment by BeckyP on October 29, 2015 at 1:59pm: NCNavyMom - hang in there - around the 2 week mark is hard. It gets easier after that first letter - you are right, just hearing from them that everything is ok is the best!

Comment by BeckyP on October 29, 2015 at 1:54pm: We were able to go see our first son on Thanksgiving. He brought another SR with him. They both really seemed to enjoy the day. We stayed at the Residence Inn, they have nice little in room kitchen area, living room area and a bedroom. I brought a couple of favorite snack/desert things from home, but pre-ordered the Turkey and such at Boston Market - it wasn't far and then brought everything back to the hotel. (hopefully its still there - this was 6 years ago!) I brought comfy clothes for them to lounge around in the hotel in. They played video games, called friends/family, ate slowly, used the head in private and took really long hot showers!!!! The SR he brought with him that day has remained close to our family every since then, so I think it was pretty special to him as well.

We will also be going this time to spend Thanksgiving with our son who is there now.

Another positive is being able to kinda figure out the lay of the land before PIR - it is pretty crazy then. I am not a fan of Chicago traffic - so it was nice to have a dry run!!!

The down side - it was REALLY hard taking him back that evening. But knowing I would see him again in a couple of weeks made it better.
