Yes, for those who are close enough to visit for Thanksgiving Day, and if you completed the Thanksgiving Adopt a Sailor form sent to you by your SR, you can have your sailor for that day!

ktsmom:  The 12/02 PIR group and this one will be allowed to be bussed to Thanksgiving dinners being served for them by different groups in the area....churches, etc.  It is such a great thing for them since they usually get to borrow cell phones to call home and they can kick back and relax a little (but are in uniform so have rules on how much they can relax!).  So be sure to keep phones close on Thanksgiving because you never know!

Rho, my son is ship 13 div 043 also. Still no letter or call here:( I am happy for everyone that has gotten them, though. I am still going with the no news is good news mantra. We live in OR, so there is NO way we could go for Thanksgiving, didn't even know it was an option. I am guessing they just stay on the base and continue to do their thing?? :(

My son is in Ship 13 Div 043. I haven't received his first letter yet but I'm encouraged knowing many of you have. I hope it comes soon. Does anyone know what happens to those recruits who are unable to spend the day with family on Thanksgiving?

Yippee! Got a real letter today! It was written on Sunday. Said he had an unexpected opportunity to get a letter out and had lots to tell, but would have to wait till this Sunday when he had more time. Letter included a yellow '2014 thanksgiving adopt-a-sailor family request form/information.' He didn't explain this beyond saying not to bother coming for such a short visit. I think (if I'm reading this form right) that you could pick up your SR between 8 and 9, keep him/her within 50 miles, and return him/her by 7:30. I think the 'adopt' part of the form is that you could take 1 other SR 'from the same training group.'

I've seen some mention of Thanksgiving.  Do our SRs have the ability to leave base for that holiday?
