Liberty is different than Leave.  Leave is similiar to requesting time off for vacation at work, they must submit a chit and have it approved.  Liberty basically means that they have "liberty" to…Continue

My son is Ship 4/Division 285 also. He left 6/29 from St. Louis. We're from Western IL, but it is quite a distance to Chicago so will be staying night before. I was thrilled receiving his first letter Thursday and form letter came today. This is my first also so I'm a newbie. The information I've been reading on here has been very helpful.

Ditto on comment about not to expect many calls! Depends on how the division is doing. You will get a minimum of 3 calls: The "I'm here" call, the 3rd week call (give or take a week), and the "I'm a Sailor" call - which happens the day they finish BS-21 (Battle Stations 21 exercise). Some people get extra calls that first week during P-days (Processing days - their first week there before boot camp really starts). If they need more info for security clearance for their A-School, the Navy counselors have them call home for names, addresses, etc. It's on the Navy's dime, they don't use their phone cards for that. Now.... if they finish BS-21 a few days prior to their PIR date, "most" RDC's will allow them more free time, so a lot of them go to Ricky Heaven, a fun spot on the base. They buy junk food (chocolate and Red Bulls), use the phone banks and jump on the computers. When I saw that my son had updated his status on Facebook, I about fell off my chair. I was sure someone had his password! But it was him.

Suggestion: Go to your settings and update your User ID. The ship number isn't that important (just designates which building their barracks are in), but the Div # and PIR date helps others know who you are and helps you connect too. But always feel free to do anything you want, it's your experience and I am here to help, not control!

If my son were still in boot camp, my User ID would look like this: Sobe Div 201 PIR 6/4/10

Travel plans: You definately want to arrive to GL on Thursday! In order to get a decent seat and go through all the security lines, you need to be at the graduation hall by 7 or 7:30 (we got there when it opened at 6:30 and had 2nd row seats).

Don't wait too long to book your rooms, the local hotels fill up fast! Nice thing is, canceling a room cost nothing if you do it 24-48 hrs before check in time.

There is a free "meet & greet" at the Ramada Inn on the night before PIR (Thurs 8/26 for this group) from 6-8 pm. You won't want to miss that - you will all be fast friends before that time and will want to meet!

Hope this helps!
