Navy Lodge is $65/ night (including tax). It is like one mile or so from the base. It is kind of old-(but clean w/indoor hallways) but it does the trick! No shuttle to PIR, but you can call a local shuttle service (if you wish for like $3 per person each way). We did that and it was great!!!! No stress! They bypassed all the traffic and they delivered us right at where they check your IDs. Navy Lodge has shuttle service info., too.
Just returned from PIR 2/10/12 we stayed Residence Inn. Had 2 bedroom,2 bath suite, full kitchen including dishwasher. Hotel was very accomodating. Clean, appears to have alot of business travelers. we arrived on Wednesday because of concern with time of year and flight delays. Wednesday night was regular rate, but Thursday and Friday they adjusted to the graduation special ($30 less a night then I booked on line). We had a great stay. Hotel clean, staff very pleasant, booklet full of info. Hot breakfast every day. They also provide light dinner, this is very basic, Wednesday was hot dogs, but they give you beer and wine. They have recently started a Meet and Greet on Thursday. Usually have a staff member available whose husband is stationed at GL, for info, this week she was working later shift. We had rental car but choose to take early shuttle to PIR. easy to get there, coming back was a little more hectic as everyone was trying to get a shuttle/cab with the snow.
Went to Sarges Meet and Greet for info. He will give you his phone number and if your sailor is staying in GL for A school he provides taxi service if they need it for shopping or going out once allowed. I called him for return shuttle, he gave me specific shuttle number in my name, unfortunately some people felt they had the right to push in front of you even thought the shuttle was your number given by Sarge himself.
Rental car was pricey, because of risk of snow we reserved an SUV and it added up quickly. Residence Inn is about 3 miles from base, but easy ride , highly recommend. Short ride to Wal Mart and a few restaurants.
Hi, thanks for this information, I will be attending my sailors PIR in September, is that the full name for the hotel? Residence Inn.? Thanks.
not any more Navy Lodge it is all done over. they have suites now sleeps six people its like a mini apartment. I got a shuttle ride from Sarge with no problems I just call ahead to make arrangements. was 10th in line loved it there people were so helpful, nice, kind, understanding, they drew me maps got me a wheel chair, they allow pets in certain rooms, two flat screen tvs, kitchen, internet you name it they are theere for you and your sailor!!
My son is Ship 11 Div 185. I originally booked the Navy Lodge, but didn't see they had a hot tub or pool. When my son called he said they take cold showers so he wants to take a long hot shower..so I thought a HOT tub would be nice. He wants to relax and veg out when he is on liberty, so I changed the hotel to RAMADA INN in Waukegan. Ammenities looked nice, read good reviews, they too are having a MEET and GREET.
Also reports say this hotel is in walking distance to alot of places, mall, food, harbor.
Something to consider. Price for graduation was good also 79.00/nite 2 queen beds in the conceirge suite.
Good luck, hope to see some of you there.
Make sure that your SR knows you plan that time at the pool so that he can wear his Navy swim trunks or go back to the ship and get them after PIR.
See the info on the Navy Lodge in the PM I sent you. There is also info on it in Saving Money PIR Weekend. There would not be a limit on the number of nights if they have a room available, but it fills up fast.
Yes, civilians can stay at the Navy Lodge. Your Sailor is your sponsor and you make the reservation under his/her name. The discussion, Navy Lodge (clickable link), will give you more info on that.
I so wish I had known this before I booked my reservations!
