To recap: Pat in IL got this ball rolling when a Navy Ombudsman asked if any Navy moms could help a Navy wife in western NC who is expecting a baby on July 4th. We will PM you the expectant mom's address upon request.

Update on Monday 4/30:

Quote from our expectant mom - "You have no idea how much this means to me! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!"

She lives about an hour and a half from any military resources. Also she has two other little girls. She is an ex-Marine. She is a very nice young woman and a pleasure to talk to. She asked Pat, "Why did you all think to do this?" Pat told her, "Beause we are all Navy Family."

Ladies, I want you to know that you are making a difference in this young woman's life! NAVY MOMS ROCK!!!!!

Through this number, Red Cross emergency communications services can put service members in touch with their families following the death or serious illness of an immediate family member, upon the birth of a service member's child or grandchild, or when a family faces other emergencies. Additional Red Cross services, such as case management and emergency financial assistance, are also available.

For those people stationed overseas, the three options for calling will remain the same: calling 877-272-7337 direct, accessing the number through a military operator, or calling their local Red Cross station.

"An emergency situation can be a very stressful time for a military family, and having just one common telephone number to remember can make a difficult situation a little easier," said Sherri Brown, the senior vice president of Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces. "U.S. military personnel and their families can remain confident that the Red Cross will be there to keep them connected when there is a crisis at home."

In the past, military families living outside an installation needed to remember the phone number for their local Red Cross chapters for emergency communications, while those living on a military installation used the 877-272-7337 number. Now, military members and their families can use this single number to initiate an emergency communication, regardless of where they live.

First, cards from across the nation must be sent to this address:

Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

Take a look at what people are saying about the program:

Every card received will be screened for hazardous materials by Pitney Bowes and distributed to participating Red Cross chapters nationwide. Once the cards arrive at the Red Cross chapters, they are sorted and reviewed by volunteers who then distribute them to service members, their families and veterans in communities across the country.

Please don’t forget to follow these guidelines while preparing your holiday greetings!

Do...

* Sign all cards
* Entitle cards “Dear Service Member, Family or Veteran”
* Limit cards to 15 per person or 50 for school class or business group
* Bundle groups of cards in single, large envelopes (there is no need to include individual envelopes and postage for cards)

Don’t...

* Send letters
* Include personal information such as home or email addresses
* Use glitter – excessive amounts can aggravate health issues of wounded recipients
* Include inserts of any kind as they must be removed in the screening process List of email address, to contact if you have a request for cards/letters & ......tag:navyformoms.ning.com,2009-05-19:1971797:Topic:23358362009-05-19T20:02:25.369ZPat L. in ILhttps://navyformoms.ning.com/profile/PatLeazenby
