My Seabee will be going to A school at Sheperd AFB soon.  Any info about the place.  Do they get off the base any time.  He thinks he will have more freedom than BC.  Could you share what you know? He will be a CE.  Do they have a graduation?  Where do they go from there, usually?

Cindy,
Congrats to your Sea-bee!!
My son is at SFAB now, and doesn't have much liberty. He went from BC to Dive training, where he had allot of liberty.
If anyone knows more about SAFB I would also like to know more, I will be visiting there at the end of the month :)
Can't wait to see my baby again

Thanks Kim,
Maybe someone out there will respond to us. If not, please let me know how your trip goes!

My son is a CE He's been in 4 yrs. . He did his "A" school at Shephard. I think they have a graduation. I would think they did. I really don't know much about Shephard except that that's where he went My son went in Nov 06, came home over Christmas, then went back and finished it.. Then he went to Mississippi. I think they get time off after "A"school before they go to their base. Don't quote me though, since I don't know how it is for everyone.. I just know what my son did. My son is stationed in MS when he isn't on deployment.. I hope that helps.
Hello All,

My daughter is in CE A-school currently at Sheppard. Her graduation is scheduled for Sept. 28. She arrived there in June a week or so after her boot camp PIR . When she first arrived she was in phase 1 a few weeks and could not leave base except for group community volunteer work. Phase 2 came next and she could leave base in civillian clothes and go to places in Witchita Falls after class, and on weekends as long as she had a buddy, was not on duty, and was back by curfew time at 1145 pm. She's hoping to get Phase 3 soon so that she can stay overnight Fri and Sat at our home and return to the base on Sundays. We are just a couple of hours away near DFW.

They have to take tests and pass room inspections to keep priviledges or they will be set back a phase. My daughter was set back to Phase 1 after not making a test grade. :(

They are divided into groups by arrival dates. The senior class graduated last week. I think a lot of the graduating CE's have been leaving A-school to go to combat training in Gulfport. Some have gone on to other places though. I've been told they usually know by week 8-10 their orders. The current classmates are all close and get along quite well. The petty officers have all been great and helpful.

We have visited her at the base. It was quite easy to navigate. We had to park outside the base, await for my daughter to meet us and then drive to the visitors center with her to get a visitor pass. We then went to the Seabee's Bldg. to check her off base to take her home for a few hours. The staff were all very cordial and helpful. We also got to meet some of the petty officers.

Here's a link to Sheppard AFB's website: http://www.sheppard.af.mil/index.asp

I have pics posted of my daughter and her A-school friends, and will be adding more as I get them: http://www.navyformoms.com/photo/albums/look-ma-im-in-a-school

Hope this helps answer some questions. :)

April
Thanks so much for the info. Sheppard sounds like a good place to be. I hope he likes it and finds some friends.
Thanks again, April.
my son isn't liking it much here.... he has phase 2, we did drive to Sherman yesterday to spend the day with my sister. I'm in a motel not far from base. He has duty today so he can't see me today, He can come see me tomorrow after school :)
Kym
My son says it's very hot. He's been bored but starts school today. Hope that helps a little. He doesn't have phase 2 yet. I'm not sure if that will help. What's it like outside of base? I hear it's a little town. I'm not even sure how they get off base. Taxi, maybe. Hope it get better for him. Thanks for the info.

Cindy
I heard there is a bus to the mall. I will be taking a taxi to the base this afternoon, at phase 2 they can't leave base on days they have duty.
I did get to do my son's laundry at my motel yesterday :0 never thought I would look forward to that....
How was your visit to the base? My son said he got to phase 2 only to fail an inspection, so he can't leave this weekend. He was bummed out! He wants so bad to go to the mall.
this weekend here will be nuts!!! all motel rooms are booked. for a bike race, has he put in for any voluntary work? I know than they get to get off base.
My son didn't, he is striving for getting top grade in his class (he is 2nd now) funny couldn't ever get him to get good grades in high school.
Don't look for any Navy stuff in the gift shop... all Air Force
Good luck to your son!! Maybe he will get to go to the mall next weekend!
If I was wrong about a bus, the taxi is $18. flat rate (one way I think)
Kym
my daughter will be there soon, also a CE. She has a very good friend that is there doing his A-school for the AF. So when she gets there and phases up, he said they are able to mingle a bit and do things, however he is AF.
She is going to be delayed once there, she has to have surgery, the second since she started BC in June. This one is a biggie. I am trying to find out about if I can go and be with her. She is going to be on a liquid diet for about 6 weeks (we think), so momma has been asked to come see her after she gets there.
My understanding is it is a nice base, they do have some nice amenities for the sailors while unable to leave the base. Of course after BC they all can not wait to get "some" freedom.
