Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

The Ten OPSEC and COMSEC Points:

Don't discuss future destinations or ports of call!
Don't discuss future operations or missions!
Don't discuss dates and times of when we will be in port or conducting exercises!
Don't discuss readiness issues and numbers!
Don't discuss specific training equipment!
Don't discuss people's names and billets in conjunction with operations!
Don't speculate about future operations!
Don't spread rumors about operations!
Don't assume the enemy is not trying to collect information on you so he can kill you, he is!
Be smart, use your head, and always think OPSEC and COMSEC when using email or phone!

Rules of thumb for parents and loved ones:
*If your sailor indicates to you they can't tell you something, believe them. Don't try to coax them into telling.
*If it is published by the navy about where a ship or unit has been (not going), that is when it's okay to share.
*If your sailor is in a high security area, say a nuke or EOD, consider using a nick name for them and you, a seperate email without your name on it, and don't even tell where YOU live. Let them tell you what they want you to tell others or if they are worried about info, always let them know you are on here. That's why they are careful on here about only putting first names on your profile page.
*Be aware, the OPSEC 10 points are about what they can't talk about. Think about what YOU might share as a parent or loved one of a military member that could cause trouble. You also have a responsibilty.
*Be respectful and teach other parents if they don't know and say too much, no need to be disrespectful or mean to them about it. Just guide them and let them know they maybe need to rewrite or delete the post. There isn't a member on here that wants to cause trouble or harm. They just aren't thinking or don't know.

cmcninch...the Navy lodge is a economical way to visit your sailor and I'm pretty sure they are located near every base, there are other places that military families can use at a discount too!

I totally agree with Lynette. You will never forget it. We, too, on my birthday of all things, spent about 7 hours sitting at O'Hare. Our son appreciated it very much. Although I was exhausted, it was very much worth it.

belovedbyhim - Very little visiting at PIR, but do NOT miss the opportunity to see this graduation from boot camp.  It is absolutely amazing!!!!  I still tear up thinking of it somedays.  Worth every minute of the short visit you have.....Friday afternoon to Friday evening.  We met at airport too in the very early morning hours.  We received a guest pass with the ticketing desk and went and had breakfast with him and sat at his gate with him until his plane took off.

Beloved byHim, my son's PIR was 12/21 he got to come home for a week for Christmas....best gift ever!!! He is also a BU and was at Gulfport for A school...It's hard to visit there to because they are scheduled at random times for watch and they can't leave the base then...but they do level up to having most weekends off so if you can time it right it's worth it! My son didn't have to do ECS...he was sent out right after graduation he is now n Public Works and is lucky enough to be stationed in Key West !!!! We've visited once and plan to go back for his birthday...Navy lodge is only $60 even in Key West!!!! Good Luck to you it's a roller coaster of emotions but 7 months down the road you get to reap the benefits!!! A quick hint..I saved the "kid in a Box' box and I use.it for all the keepsakes, letters, PIR program, everything that he will get a kick out of seeing when he finally gets out!!! Enjoy your ride!!!

Belovedbyhim, I think you mean Gulf Port.
If he has A-school there, he will move barracks once done to start ECS training which is also done at Gulf Port. During A-school he will find out what base and battalion he will Join. Mine is a CE, she is at Port Hueneme. She A-schooled in TX. She just passed her 3 year anniversary. Is also getting ready for her second deployment in a few months.

Hi belovedbyHim,

My son PIR'ed 5/31 and is presently going to A school SW in Gulfport. It has been our experience that SR's routinely graduate on Friday, spend the day with loved ones until 7pm that evening, return to RTC and get on a bus to O'Hare early Sat morning(2:30am for us) You are able to meet your sailor and sit with them with a special pass issued through the USO. Once they arrive to A school they will be briefed and most likely will be on "hold" until their class fills. My son was on hold for 3 weeks before his classes started. During that time they do a lot of cleaning and busy work. Although not as strict as boot camp, they have very few liberties. Over time they "phase up" and receive liberties that include civilian clothing and extended curfews. I hope this information is helpful :)

Hello all.  I'm a mega newby here.  My son shipped to BC last Wed.  He is supposed to go to A school in Biloxi as a BU after that. I have no idea how long A school is or what to expect.  Does anyone know how long after PIR they usually have before they leave for A school?  When in BC do they usually find out?  Are you better able to visit with them at A school than at PIR?   Any advice from anyone who has "been there, Done that"  would be greatly appreciated.  I look forward to knowing you all.

HI everyone! This is all new to me, since my son is still an SR. But he will be heading to Sheppard Air Force Base, as well, Karen. He will be UT.  Is there anything that I could pass on to him in his letters, on what he can expect when he gets to A School? We still have 32 days left until PIR. This mom is anxious to see her boy!
