MEDICAL COVERAGE AFTER THEY LEAVE
TAMP (Transitional Assistance Management Program) is a program that offers TriCare standard benefits to separated service members (and their dependents) for 180 days after separation. The coverage begins the day following separation, and you can then go to CHCBP (Continued Health Care Benefit Program- similar to COBRA at $933/quarter for service member, $1900 for family), The separated service member has to call and activate the TAMP benefits. That's it- just a phone call. The service member had to have served for than 30 days and the cause for separation has to be no fault of their own (like a medical condition). DEFINITELY worth looking into! Here's the info:

I am sorry it was such a bad experience for your son! I wish there was some way that the recruiters could be held responsible for the disillusionment; disappointment and other negative responses that come out of getting people in the service, only to have them be booted on this type of technicality!

We actual go to a counselor tomorrow to discuss my son's feelings regarding his situation! I hope your son's road to recover will be speedy and full to good things!

Elizab51, glad he is coming home soon, sorry to hear about the "bill"! I know that Daniel could only keep his PT clothes and underwear.....Wonder what happens to those uniforms....

Hi Elizab61, my son came home the 16th....he had trouble with an RDC as well (along with a host of medical issues)! If the RDC crossed, the line, then your son needs to report it! I am glad he found out quickly and was able to make the decision early on, it probably saved him lots more heartache and worse depression! My son enjoyed, so to speak, his time at ship 5, said the couselors there were all really good and very nice. I got to talk to him every night for about 10 minutes and longer on NEX days (tues & thurs).

Daniel found out the day he was leaving that he had a bus ticket $175; I know the plane ticket we purchased was in excess of $300...they go the cheapest method. We purchased the plane ticket before we knew what kind of transportation he had, figuring it wouldn't be a plane ticket...and we were correct!

Daniel said they told him a cab ride to the airport was between $50 and $100....I would assume you could get there via bus or train, but obviously that takes longer...

Diamond's Mom, I'd contact the CMC, Command Master Chief and complain about the spitting....they are allowed to yell and "break down" the sailors, but its supposed to be done constructively! I know my son had problems with a brother division's RDC. We contacted the CMC and my husband actually had a call from the CMC (course my husband is a retired chief and they take care of their own, which why I think he got a call as opposed to just an email message), but he said CMC Dodd sound fair and would get to the bottom of the situation.

I certainly don't think it would hurt the situation to complain. And if this RDC is doing it to her, he/she is probably doing it to others and besides being unhealthy, it isn't called for!

The military is a tough place to be. And while I understand the need to make sure that its personnel can withstand the stress of combat/battlestations/war, there are still limits as to how they test the kids to make sure they can handle it!

amber'smom - daniel got a bus ticket, we opted to get him a plane ticket instead...just finished the refund paperwork today! Daniel was taken to the great lakes bus station (outside the RTC gate) and given a ticket to the Oglive (spelling) train station in downtown chicago. I am lucky my brother lives south of chicago so Daniel walked to the Union station and took a train to my brother's house. I believe most of the other people he was with walked to the greyhound bus station.

Amber will have to find herself a way to the airport if they don't give her a plane ticket, so be sure she has cash for a taxi or something.

I picked Daniel up from LAX today! He looks good! Lots about 30 lbs! I can tell he has real mixed feelings about being separated! He was a member of the marching band in high school last year, so we went to help setup for the performance tonight. He got lots of hugs and positive responses to him being there, so I think that helped some!

I am glad Amber is coming home next wednesday, thats great!

Daniel got to ship 5 on tuesday sept 28; saw legal on tues the 6 and was separated o the 15th. The captain reviews each file which is why it takes so long once they are done with legal. In our case, it was a good thing. They changed his separation code from an RE4 to and RE8 so after a year, if he gets his medical things taken care of, and wants to, he can go back into the military.

I know its frustrating not being able to help our kids, but they are being taken care of. Daniel said that all the staff in his area were totally fantastic! He also volunteered for work parties and even the head cleaning group (toilet)...so I think that helped him pass the time, otherwise it is really boring!

Daniel called, he was at the train station outside the base, taking a train heading for Chicago! He'll be learning how to take trains today, because once he gets there, he is taking another train to Naperville to my brother's house. They will get him to the airport tomorrow morning and I should see him by lunchtime!!!! Glad we paid for the plane ticket...I really didn't want him on a bus from IL to southern California, especially without cellphone...I would have been a nervous wreck!
Comment by valeriejean on October 15, 2009 at 2:33pm
I believe the ombudsman is like the link between military people and the military...there is a # up above...when my husband was active, they were big helps when a family member had problems and needed to contac their service person while underway...I assume since there is one attached to RTC that they could be of assistance....

Call legal and find out what the hold up is if your recruit has signed the waiver, they maybe able to tell you if there is a hold-up...
Comment by valeriejean on October 14, 2009 at 11:56am
I heard from Daniel yesterday, he leaves RTC Thursday! My brother is going to pick him up and put him on a plane Friday! Does anybody know what train station they are dropped at so I can coordinate it?

Soxrulescubs, Daniel saw Legal on Tuesday the 6th, he was put on the PSD list Friday (9th) and since Monday was holiday found out yesterday his departure date. It looks like it usually takes about 10-15 business days once they hit ship 5...
