Welcome ddmom - My daughter started out on the USS Essex before the hull swap in the spring of 2012 with the BHR. Katie, a DC2 now, served her 3+ years and is now serving on the USS George HW Bush out of Norfolk.

http://www.c7f.navy.mil is a great place to find out what is happening with the 7th fleet - which the BHR is a part of.

What rate is your son? Is this his first ship?

Hello, I am new to this group and have so many questions!  My son left for Japan yesterday and I still haven't heard from him.  Could anyone tell me what the usual routine is for those stationed here?  How often do they go out to sea and for how long?  So many questions...

Sharon - Final pkg...probably seems very strange after all those sent these past years.  If you start suffering from 'APO/FPO package withdrawal', you can come join MAS - Molly's Adopt A Sailor........I enjoy being a part of it! You can participate each month, or whenever you want.  They adopt a ship or location each month, provide a list of needs/wants and then you mail it during the designated 'ship date' to a designated person who distributes them.  They also have 'special hugs' projects and 'stitch with love' pillowcase projects.  Last month it was to crash and rescue on the USS Kearsarge, a coast guard group and an Army group. In January it was to the USS Gonzales that only gets replenished once a month.

ALL are welcome to join!

Yes, Katie has a 1-bedroom.  She is still working on getting a little more furniture.  Currently she is sleeping on a borrowed, deluxe queen air mattress.  Hard to shop during the week with the work hours she keeps these days.

No .. same size rack. She likes the middle, but in the Engineering berthing the set up is crazy where she is, at least. You walk in the door, go to the left first there are showers then the next room has the toilets. If you go do the right then you go down stairs and then around the corner past the first set of racks and then there's some short lockers to your right and her rack to the left.  Where she was assigned it is only 2 high. She wanted the top bed since on the Essex she liked the middle of 3, but the upper rack didn't have the 'coffin' storage below the bed.

Marianne, does she have more room where she sleeps?

Cathy - Her ship is Bigger....Katie is on the carrier USS George HW Bush! More AirWings and no amphibious ships.....5,000 on board.

Best news I read all day Sharon!!  I'm so excited for all of you!

Mariannne, your visit sounded wonderful!  Is her ship similar to the BHR/Essex?

Sharon - I will share your HAPPY news with Katie.

We are already back from our 48 hr trip. Toured the ship, had lunch with friends of Katie, went shopping for more 'basics' for the house (dishes, glasses, cookware, etc.), Joe put a new door lock in, put together 2 saddle seat bar stools and a TV stand w/storage. We got a lot done in such a short time.  It was wonderful seeing Katie.

Hello, all! Still here, too. Just times.
Cathy, have a great party! Great people were born in March, Hehe.
Love reading all posts!
Unexpected snow here today, not much, but still.
Sharon, thanks for pointing out your son in the BHR fb pic. Looks like that had fun.
Take care, all. Have a great weekend!
