Pam-- we got married in Feb. So VERY newlywed. Ha. To make it worse the Navy keeps us on different schedules. I work 12hr shifts so one week I work 5 days total and the next only 2. Well, of course the boys would be out on the weeks I only work 2 days. How lame! We felt like we had so little time together. It makes me anxious to get out of the Navy. I just want to be able to spend as much time wiith him as possible. Though we remind ourselves that we have our entire lives ahead of us. But still. Lol.

As far as the emails stopping at random times. The main reason for that [other than that old gator breaking down all the time] is when they need to move from on area to another without being detected, they have to shut down all communications. I believe my husband said that even means the radar. That way they can just "disappear" in a sense. :]

Shirley-- They do get paid more [this is how we plan on paying for our "big" wedding. Haha]. They get sea pay. Their pay isn't taxed. And if they're married they're still getting BAH [except in our case] as well as Seperation Pay. PLUS in some areas they go to they may be getting Hazardous Pay. The Sea and Haz pay very in amount. The longer your on the sea the more you get paid as the time passes. Haz pay differs for the kind of zone you're in.
My cousin just got back from deployment and he had A LOT saved up. Can't wait for our savings account to look like his. Haha.

Well, I'm off to go print of pictures to send in a letter. We never had the time to do it before hand. Unfortunately.

I'd have to look at the charts, but it isn't a lot, especially for the younger guys. But I don't think it is taxed. Every little bit helps, and they have next to nothing to spend at sea! Those port calls though... can we say let loose and a little shopping? Troy brought back a beautiful Arab dress from Dubai(Bahrain?) for me. Very nice.

Shirley, yes, they get sea pay. There's conditions and details which I don't have handy, but they do get special pay. Also, married sailors get family separation pay.

The e-mail thing ... sometimes the ship does just cut it off for operational reasons. We've all seen the posts from panicked family members who'd grownused to emails, then freak out when they stop. There's a dozen reasons, most of them very mundane and boring.

"have no idea what he's watching for" LOL! That is funny! Actually, very few of them on duty "watch" anything, except the poor guys up on the weather decks, and the ones monitoring um, monitors. Mostly being a hot body, awake and ready. Oh, they work, but the midwatches get dull fast. There's a reason many sailors drink a ton of coffee!

Goodness, I would possibly kick my husband's ass for that. But I know he wouldn't do it anyway. Haha, he hates leaving me. Just the idea killed him. God, he made sure I was protected enough though. We live 20 miles from base to live in a safe neighborhood. Got a German Shepherd puppy [dear Lord is this dog protective of me!], have 3 locks on our door, brought home our 9mm and he still wants me to get pepper spray and my CCW. GoodNESS. I love him dearly. He is more than I ever expected to find in a husband.

I can't send you a message Pamela, but this is the address to the ship. I'm working on finding you a couple numbers as well.

Rank, Last Name, First Name
USS Pearl Harbor (LSD-52)
FPO AP 96667-1740

This is the Ombudsman's number (619) 301-6983 or send an email to surfaceforcesomb@aol.com . The one for the dubuque is different. I can give you all that if you'd like? Is your son just on the Pearl Harbor temporarily?

No, I wasn't on board. I've been on the ship, but wasn't there Sunday. We had just gotten back that night from leave. Unfortunately my father in law had passed away right before we got out there for our leave. I had Monday and Tuesday day off and just had to work that night. He didn't have to report till 0800 Tuesday morning. Luckily. So we spent those fleeting moments at home and finishing final projects [hanging my candles and hooks and showing me how to do things] and cuddling and whatnot.
And yes I'm in SD. I'm actually stationed here as well, at the Naval Hospital. :] My husband is an OS-- Operation Specialist. Or, as he calls himself, "the radar geek." They basically mark the cooridinates of where the ship is going, make sure they don't hit any other ships or whales, etc. [yes, ships, they've come close before. I don't know how the people on watch didn't see it, and why the OS before them didn't see it, but that's the Navy for you].

My name is Natasha by the way. :]

Pamela. My husband is on the Dubuque, maybe I can help you out. My friend's husband is on the same ship and has the same problem with her husband as you do with your son. I'm gonna try and find some info, and I'll message you with my findings. :] I know it's hard. My husband has been emailing after every watch and I know that the boys are all fine. So no worries folks. Apparently it's a lot easier than all the drills they've been running [and coming from my husband, as an OS, that's a big deal. They have 6 on 6 off and he never gets more than 3 or 4 hours of sleep at a time.].

LOL, Donna, is that a good thing?
