https://www.shopmyexchange.com/scs/calling-card

They do have a toll free # listed and I would suggest calling them before you make a purchase.

**Please note that I have not used them. When my son deployed back in 2015 he bought his ship to shore card at the Nex and I was able to re-load it.

Your sailor can also buy them at the NEX but they often run out (and it seems they cost more than going directly to AT&T).

Hello all:

This is my son's first deployment, he is with HSC-5 assigned to the Truman. Just wondering how long it normally takes for packages to get to the ship. I mailed his Christmas package on Dec. 7, and several other family members mailed something around the same time also, My son still hasn't received anything. Is this normal?

I tracked my package and it shows on Dec. 17th to be at the FPO in Bahrain.

TIA

SPECIAL MESSAGES

In the event of an emergency within the sailor’s family, where you feel the sailor must be notified and considered for Emergency Leave, you must notify the American Red Cross through the national headquarters in Washington, DC (1-877-272-7337) or via their website www.redcross.org.

Circumstances falling in this category include critical injury or illness, birth, and death. The Red Cross requires two types of information to send Special Messages:

1) Service member Identification – Use the Red Cross Notification form to keep this information at hand. It includes the sailor’s complete identifying information such as name, Social Security Number, the unit, ship or boat, etc.

2) Situation Information – Use the Special Messages forms link (or found below) to have this information when you contact the Red Cross. It includes the facts of a situation, so the Red Cross can verify the emergency and a complete picture can be conveyed to the sailor.

Even though it may go against what our emotions will be telling us to do, DON'T TRY TO SEND EMERGENCY NEWS DIRECTLY TO A SUBMARINER. All messages are reviewed for just this kind of content. Any information which is considered upsetting or harmful will not be given to the sailor. The command will wait until official notification comes from the Red Cross and then use protocols for handling it.

On a sub, it's easier for one person to jeopardize the entire crew, so keeping morale safe is paramount. Email privileges can be taken from an entire boat because one relative abuses them. Please handle things through the proper channels.

Granting of Emergency Leave depends on the recommendation of the Red Cross, the current operational commitment of the ship, and the availability of adequate transportation. The key point to identify to the Red Cross is why the serviceman’s presence is needed. Commands can take no action on Emergency Leave without a Red Cross report of a situation.

Special Messages are normally sent only when the situation involves a member of the immediate family of the sailor or sailor’s spouse. These are defined in the Naval Military Personnel Manual as father, mother, person standing in loco parentis (i.e. person who raised the sailor), spouse, children, brother, sister, or only living relative.

**PLEASE REMEMBER OPSEC AND DON'T POST SPECIFIC DATES REGARDING SHIP MOVEMENT**

Dates may only be discussed AFTER they have happened.

Here's the shipping info. Remember you will need the specific box # from your Sailor. ****THIS IS A NEW ADDRESS****

There have been questions from some about seeing the ship off - where's the best location, can they get on the pier? Anyone know?

Make sure your sailor gets a "Ship to Shore" AT&T calling card. They can be purchased on the ship and can be reloaded. You will need the pin # from the card. Call 1.800.569.2018 to reload - minimum $25. ***UPDATE 12/29/15*** AT&T will be issuing new cards as of 2/1/16. You can continue to use any minutes you have on your old card after that date, but you will NOT be able to reload that card after 2/1/16. Also, until 1/11/16 if you reload your card they are giving 25% more minutes for FREE!

Here's the link to the USPS "Click & Ship". You can get free boxes/tape etc. from them too.

He won't call or return calls- and now I think his phone has been cut off possibly due to non payment, is spending all of his money, and won't respond to emails or any other communication. He is not living on the ship, and will not give me his address. I feel uncomfortable sharing so much, but am really worried about him and am not sure what to do. Normally we have a decent relationship, and all of this is pretty out of the blue. Can anyone give me any resources for a situation like this? I Is there anyone I can contact to discuss my concerns?

I know a lot about the navy- father, sister, brother all retired from the navy, and I have 2 nephews currently serving in the marines. All of them were officers though, not enlisted; maybe this is my disconnect?

Thanks for any info....
