Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

**UPDATE 4/26/2022** Effective with the May 6, 2022 PIR 4 guests will be allowed. Still must be fully vaccinated to attend.
**UPDATE as of 11/10/2022 PIR vaccination is no longer required.

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Hi! I just found this group and after reading some of the posts thought I can relate to this group. I love to cross-stitch and so does my MIL. She is a member of the embroidery guild and just gave me the directions to make little "kissing pillows" for the military. Has anyone done these before? Do any of you know anything about them? I thought it might be fun to try, but what to do once I make a bunch is the question. Got any advice for me?

A caution on the framing process - many of the new fibers and over-dyed fabrics cannot be washed so please be sure to keep this in mind if you use these types of materials. Aida, DMC and Sullivans floss are fine to wash but if you're not sure, check with the store when you purchase it or ask someone before you wash these specialty items.

I have done some framing of my own. The first thing I do is soak the piece in a mild vinegar and water solution. That helps set the colors and reduces fading. Then I iron the piece carefully under a press cloth. I stretched mine on the kind of frames they use for painting canvases. When I'm ready to frame it, I transfer it to a piece of core board. I anchor the piece with no rust pins and then put it into a frame. I hope this helps a little. I know that having things framed can cost over $100.

dees- yeah I would like to as well. maybe this evening cause it hasnt happened so far.lol My sailor was fortunate enough to be invited by a friend to dinner with his relatives that live near Great Lakes(although not too near he said he was on the train for ever..actualyy 2 trains)but I wish I knew who they were so I could thank them. He was pretty upset while on the train b ut afterwards he said he had a great time and they were wondeful and treated him like family. They will never know how much I appreciate it. I was so worried about him I coldn't eat until I knew he was ok. Once a mom always a mom LOL

Hi! I would love to make stockings for my family, but I don't know if I will ever get around to doing it or not. That is a major amount of work! Since I posted last I've finished Bent Creek's Red Thread, and a few others. Right now I'm working on Robin Hood but I couldn't tell you who it's designer is. I'm enjoying it, though. I have several pieces at the frame shop, too. Some I did years ago and am finally getting around to framing them. One I finished recently, Yesteryear. (Again, I can't remember the designer.)
I hope to get some stitching time in over the long weekend. Hang in there - you'll be okay. Maybe you can plan a Thanksgiving meal when he's able to get home? That could be fun! Take care!

Hi all. I actually started cross stitching when I was pregnant with my sailoor. How appropriate . LOl I have made all 3 of my kids stockings and am now working on 1 for my nephew. Helps pass the time and no greater satisfaction than taking a blank piece of cloth and ending up with something beautiful. Kind of like our sailors; started out with these tiny little babies and took our time and care and look what we got. This will be my first real holiday without my son. he is in A school at Great Lakes and I am missing him like crazy. Hope evrone has a happy and safe holiday.

Hi Janet, Leslie and Gio! I haven't been on this board for quite awhile, but I love to cross-stitch. I'm still working on Bent Creek's Red Thread, but I'm so close to being finished I can taste it! If only I could just lock myself away for a day or so, I think I could finish it and move on to something eles. I probably have 8 or 9 WIPs and that many more that I want to start.
Janet, I had the same problem with my eyes - so when I had an eye appointment, I took my stitching with me. I told her that my family always teased me about wearing two pair of glasses to stitch and she fixed my right up. I now have "stitching glasses" - bifocals with my regular distance vision on top, and a magnified vision on the bottom, just right for stitching. It was well worth it and I would recommend it to anyone. Now I can watch TV while I stitch and not look silly while doing it.
