This sounds so cool! I still have a DEPper, but I'm trying to practice what to write while he is gone. One of our local Moms had a son in BC over the summer. I wrote him a couple times and REALLY enjoyed it. I'm certainly up for doing some writing and when my son leaves in July, I can have him give me names of recruits who aren't getting mail.

howdy Moms...

HI spomss...:)

I used to add an extra sheet to letters that could be pasted around the division...last year during football play-offs I copy/pasted from ESPN website...lots of jokes to copy/paste from the internet too.....thanks for the address of a SR, I'll get a letter out on Monday...:))

You'er right lemonelephant as my sailor makes his way thru the Navy journey, I have met many of his fellow sailors, so many different kinds of family structure and backgrounds..and with that so many reasons as to why they are in the Navy....

that makes good sense!  was wondering how to make sure that every SR gets included...so glad you have more experience on how to make certain that happens...

so more for tips and how-to write letters to SRs??  I know it was hard at first to start a letter to someone I didnt know...

spomss, even if the group were only for invited members or if members had to be approved, having names posted is not a good idea. It is best to share names in a PM. Another thing we did in a group when we shared the names is that each mom committed to one day a week and we did not give the same names out to everyone. We tried to have it so that the recruit received at least one letter a day and maybe a few more, but not a large number on any day. We have seen in the past that caring people who asked for names form some other sites were all given the same names and a couple of recruits received large numbers of mail from people that they did not know and were overwhelmed in a bad way, so we need to keep that in mind when sharing names of people that we don't know personally.

think this is a great idea!

lemonelephant do you think if this becomes a 'closed' group we could use the discussions to add the SR names that need letters???  so that each division or PIR group could have a discussion so it would be easy to access and then we could let others know??

There are ideas in Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit. My Sailor enjoyed getting funny cards and anything that was not forbidden by his RDC (no glitter or magazine or newspaper clippings) from pretty much anyone. He still loves getting cards and letters, especially when he is unable to access email or to be on fB or Skype. For fun, I send cards at some holidays that would be appropriate for someone who is the age of the second digit in his age or the age he was 10 years before along with some sort of toy, puzzle or game that is appropriate for that age. For example, his sister and I sent water pistols and water balloons and foam and balsa gliders and he and his friends had a great time with those, except for cleaning up the balloon pieces. Another time I sent a cheeping chick toy. Part of the fun is that it doesn't happen for every holiday, so it is unexpected.

When I have written to other recruits, they have mentioned that they enjoyed jokes and pictures from kids. Some liked crossword puzzles or Sudoku puzzles and some said they passed those on to others. Bible verses were popular with some, while others preferred encouraging quotes with or without pictures.
