My son will be joining the USS H.S. Truman family soon after A School graduation in Pensacola next week. Does anyone have any details of the upcoming May deployment? Any and all information is most appreciated. Thanks

Madonna,

Are you sure he was buying his medals and not just the ribbons? The medals are usually presented or at least sent from the Navy after verification. I don't think a person can just "buy" a medal. There are actually some pretty stiff penalties for wearing medals that a person didn't actually earn.

Hi Navy moms - Came across this article in our local paper today and thought I would pass it on. http://www.kitsapsun.com/news/2010/jan/22/threats-prompt-navy-to-be...

CALLING ALL MOMS! Here is a chance to let ‘our’ sailors know how much we love and support them! If there is one thing every Navy mom learns during boot camp it is to write a great letter!

Will you please write a letter or thank you card to a Sailor aboard the USS Carl Vinson which is conducting humanitarian and disaster relief operations? Our goal is to send over 5,000 thank you cards to Chaplain ‘Fish’ by February 10th! He will distribute the cards and letters we send to the crew on the Vinson and the other Navy ships; the USS Bataan, USS Nassau and USS Comfort headed to provide support to Haiti!

Contact your local schools, scout groups and churches! Collect as many thank you notes and cards and send them along! The best (and most cost effective) way to send them might be a flat rate box offered by the Post Office! Let these sailors know that you are proud of them and say thank you for all they are doing!

For the address of Chaplain ‘Fish’ please contact me with how many cards you have gathered and I will be happy to provide the address! Let's show them just how proud we are of them!

When the USS Carl Vinson pulled out of Norfolk January 12th on the way to their new homeport of San Diego they were singing ‘California Dreaming’. That night a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and their destination changed. The Vinson was one of the first ships able to respond. We have all watched the news and seen the pictures. But can you imagine what it is to be at sea for the first time and called to duty in such an important mission? To feel the 95+ degree heat, experience the cry for help and pain, see the devastation up close?

Many of our sailors are boots on the ground and many more are providing support for them. Those sights and sounds will stay with them forever. The United States Navy has prepared them to do their jobs, and let's face it; we know they are the best of the best.

These sailors are pumping over 3,500 gallons of water a day to deliver to quake victims, launching well over 600 flights of aid and rescue from their deck, providing security and caring for many injured. They have given of themselves… working long hours, catching sleep when they can. Here is our chance to let them know how much we appreciate all they are doing!

I thought I'd share this article I read this weekend in our local newspaper. It really has a lot of good information for Navy families.

I've been reading the news online and watching the national news reports about the Norfolk area. Sounds really bad, so much flooding. I hope our son's house in Chesapeake is okay. They are currently stationed in Jacksonville and have the house rented to a Navy family.

Sorry to intrude on ya'll, but (maybe on the last 177 pages, LOL!)
I saw in an article on Patrick Swayze that he visitetd the Truman and was blown away by the reception he got. Said they watched Red Dawn, Next of Kin, Road House and Point Break regularly. He said he thought he should put out there that he really believes this is the day of the peaceful warrior (after his role in all those pictures.) Does anyone know when it was that he did visit the Truman?
Thanks for letting me post. Hi Karen, Connie and Stephanie.

My pleasure Dusty. For all you newbie moms, the Truman is host to all sorts of different commands who tag along with the Truman gang when they go sea. Each command has their own ombudsman and the ship has them too. My son is attached to one of those tenant commands, Helicopter Squadron 7. They live in Jacksonville, Florida but fly up to Norfolk to deploy with the Truman. There are a few of us hanging out on this neat Truman group board. I find out lots more information about what is happening on the ship here. You all seem like a really neat group of moms.
