Boot Camp Material to Memorize

My goddaughter is reporting to boot on August 14, 2013.  I know from reading the blog that at boot there is material that she will have to have memorized.  I’m going to list the thing that I believe she will have to know in no particular order and I would appreciate your thoughts on which items to memorize first to last (just list out by the associated number).  If I have included an item that doesn’t need to be memorized, please let me know and she will remove it from her to do list.  Thanks in advance for helping Tori (my SR) and myself out.  God bless our troops and the USA.  Mark

1 - 11 General Orders of a Sentry.

2 - The Sailor’s Creed.

3 - Military Time.

4 - The Phonetic Alphabet.

5 - Ranks and Insignias (32 or 33 of them?)

6- The Birth of the Navy (the date, see below for this info).

The Birth of the Navy of the United States

On Friday, October 13, 1775, meeting in Philadelphia, the Continental Congress voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns, as well as swivel guns, and manned by crews of eighty, and to send them out on a cruise of three months to intercept transports carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America. This was the original legislation out of which the Continental Navy grew and as such constitutes the birth certificate of the navy.

She should be able to recite 1 and 2 any time, including when she's doing pushups..  She should be able to recite the general orders out of order too.

She will need to know military time, the alphabet, and know the ranks/insignia the entire time she is in the Navy, they're not memorized for fun, they're used daily.   Military time  is super easy, mornings begin with zero, after noon add 12.  The alphabet is best learned in context: BZ = Bravo Zulu (good job)  Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.  And so on.  Learn the enlisted paygrades and badges first, they can be grouped into sets of three for memorization.  If she can count to three, she can get these down (I cheated, y dad was a masterchief...)  Then work on the officers.

She'll need to know important dates in Naval history, there are classes and written exams during boot camp.  They'll teach them, but can't hurt to learn what she can.

Get the word "okay" right out of her vocabulary NOW.  There is yes and there is no, "okay" means nothing.  She'll do pushups for replying okay (I did, once, they might not do that now... but they might)

What she needs to learn is in her DEP START Guide and there are places in that to check it off when she knows it.  She may want to join http://www.navydep.com to learn the ins and outs from the DEP point of view. Craig runs that and will steer you to some good links on there such as http://www.navydep.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2205 to help with the 11 General Orders.

This may help as well: http://www.flashcardexchange.com/tag/dep.

BTW, you only need to post in one place for most of us check all of the forums and the Blogs.
