What are the guidelines or current regulations for traveling under orders (from old duty station to new duty station, etc) on commercial airlines within CONUS? Are sailors required to travel in uniform, allowed to travel in uniform, or forbidden to travel in uniform?
And what about traveling in uniform while on leave?
The last time I was at an airport there were US military uniforms everywhere I looked. That was in February. While internet surfing I also ran across an Army directive authorizing soldiers to travel in their ACUs in CONUS "to remind the public that we're at war."
I know service members are NOT supposed to travel in uniform while traveling overseas unless traveling on military transport. That goes way back - before 9/11, even back to the Cold War.
Not sure what the exact guidelines are but I do know when my daughter left A school she had to leave in dress uniform, she also flew home in them. When she came home in December, her and her BF flew in dress uniforms. I said I didnt think you could and she said it was up to her command and they said it was fine.
Most of the military you see traveling alone are either coming or going from A'gstan or Iraq on leave. You know the ones you see with only a backpack and their BDU's, they dont have civies to wear home. They are almost all Army as they get deployed for 12 + months and Marines and Navy usually only 6 months, so they dont get leave as much. I dont need to tell you, you are well seasoned on military leaves. Dont know if this helps?
No offense to the Air Force, not sure how long their deployments are.
