Sailor Leaving for Spain for 2 Years

Despite some physical problems, my sailor got through boot camp but because of the nature of her chronic sinus problems while in Chicago, they suggested she disqualify from air crew (she wanted to be a mechanic) and offered her other jobs....she just finished A school and is a hospital corpsman. It has been a roller coaster ride. The next thing we knew she was leaving for Spain right away from Texas, but she actually got to come home first. We are so grateful. She leaves for Spain Tuesday and will be stationed at the Naval Base in Rota working at the Naval Hospital. How do we communicate with her when she is out of the country without crazy expensive phone bills?  Is it true that her father and I might be able to take a military flight over to see her so we don't have to pay typical air fare or is there some way to get discounted tickets for military families?  I work full time 45 minutes from home and have to be at work at 7:30 so I probably won't be able to check this until the weekend but looking for input. If you have tips that are helpful for when our sailor is overseas, please share!

Once she gets to Rota,  her sponsor and others sailors can fill her in on the best way to communicate.  Vonage or Magicjack come to mind.  Also, Skype via wifi.  And there are free texting via wifi apps.  DO NOT use international roaming on an existing phone.  Service can be suspended if she has a contract in the US.

      I found this conversation online:

You are not eligible for military flights unless you are military or retired military.  The military discount on civilian airlines only applies to ID card holders too, is limited, and isn't that great.

Rota is a terrific duty station, so many opportunities!  I enjoyed Spain, although I wasn't stationed there.
