I'd love to see a picture. I am a scrapbooker!! So I'm always excited to capture memories. My son is on his ship right now and I told him to take lots of pictures and write in a journal ;-)
Junebug - Very sweet. I'm sure he's excited to get down to some Navy business, but it must be hard for Capri not to get to settle into her home. Blessings to you all.
My sailor comes for leave in 16 Days, woot woot!!
Hi Denise, My son just went through his A-School as a CS. Like anything else in the Navy you do your job and them some, because there is always watch and cleaning. So, in Ft. Lee your son will probably get time learning to cook, which my son enjoyed very much. He waited a while after his school to get his orders but he got to fly to Spain and help with the cooking for his ship to come back home. Now he will get his leave. I hope that your son feels he is being used to his best potential and will not be disappointed. When Chris was on the ship he worked a 17 hr. day!! He likes it, but not everyone would. Good luck to your sailor.
Denise--my son also went through A-School (with Oregonmom's son). The school is about 4-5 weeks. They will cook and do other duties as well. It is basic cooking in the beginning and then my son liked the baking the best. He graduted from comm. college with a culinary degree a year ago, then joined the Navy last July. He is now in San Diego and will be joining his ship which is on deployment.
The biggest "problem" with Ft. Lee is that nothing is close. When your son finally earns some leave time he will have to take a taxi anywhere he wants to go. :( My son usually buddied up with a few guys if they went anywhere.
New to this group. My son finishes his A school next week. He has been in Petersberg, Va. for the last 4 weeks. He is very happy with his future in the Navy which makes us very happy. He thinks he knows where he will be stationed. I sure hope he gets it!!!!
Johanna--I do know where he was sent to but was not listing it for security reasons. I know that through FB the RR is updated on what they do, photos of the week, etc. For security reasons I don't want to list where he was or may possibly be going. I'm sure you can understand. :)
Yes, the RR is stationed in San Diego but in January will be going up to WA for an overhaul. More moving for him and his new wife. A new vacation spot for us to visit. :)
Hello Ladies. Allow me to introduce myself. My sailor graduated last Friday.. He will go to fort lee for CS school next week then after that off to Groton I think.. PIR was beyond amazing!!! I was smiling ear to ear!! Met N4M at meet and greet it was wonderful!!! Gonna miss that group but I guess that's military life eh! Nice to meet you ladies. More soon.
Welcome Mrs. Mink! Congrats to your sailor that graduated last week. PIR is simply amazing, isn't it? I would love to go back again and see another graduation (hint..hint to my other sons..lol). Ft. Lee is great but just know that once they finally earn liberty they have to take a taxi everywhere. Nothing in walking distance.
Oh no. Isn't there any bus service in fort lee?? Thanks junebug I'm gonna ask u to be my friend lol... PIR was beyond amazing!!!!! I just told my BFF last night to sign up her daughter for JRROTC at her High school to keep her out of trouble in fact I wanted to see another PIR LOL LOL
No bus service that I know of. :( I remember talking to my son on a few occasions and they took a taxi to a gas station (!) to get some snacks. His first room at Ft. Lee had a fridge which was nice. Then he eventually got moved to the "trailers" after graduation while waiting to leave. No fridge--too many people. Not the most pleasant conditions but they made the most of it!
Brandon is in Aschool in Fort Lee in VA. It is an Army base and they do things different than the Navy. He said that there is not much to do there. He said it is like being back in BC. They have to march to class and to go eat?? They only have 15min to eat and can not socialise...There is only one place to eat..not fast food like at GL. He said one of the guys that has been there several weeks and has weekend overnight liberty came in drunk last night so all of them are being punished...I feel bad for them, They can't even go to the USO...and that is the only place to go there....Just praying he can get through A-school and rank high in his class!
Yup, being on an Army base is a bit different. He will get through it. It is only four weeks and then once he graduates, hopefully he won't be there too much longer afterwards.
Shannon--I agree! My son really liked it, except for the taxi part. The guys all got along and the instructors were great. He will enjoy it--dont' worry. :)
Oh ladies you made me feel better. I just know my sson will have the time of his life in the Navy!!! How did your sailors decide on CS jobs? What made them go that direction?
Shannon... same here.. my sson threw a curve ball when he announced he was going to do CS.. he didnt even like to cook at home.. always askes me to do it for him... LOL...
My son took culinary all through HS. Graduated last May with his culinary degree from community college. Has always enjoyed cooking. Last year our church had a raffle and he was put up on a raffle to cook a dinner for up to six. What really made him decide on a CS career prior to HS is his cousin was in the Navy and was a chef at the White House for Bush and Obama. He left the Navy last year and is now the Food/Beverage Director for a resort in Hawaii. So he has always had an interest in cooking.
My son will be heading to Fort Lee next Wed. 6/22. He has been DTP in Goose Creek waiting to leave the nuke school to go to culinary school. He was thrilled today that he finally got the date to leave. He will be home for a day before he goes and Fort Lee is only about 45 minutes from our home here in Chesterfield, VA. Although he qualified for the nuke program it was not for him and when he didn't do well in it he said he would rather be in culinary school. We are glad the waiting is over and he will at least get there next week. Not sure if he starts right away or not - we'll find out then. He will be going to Groton, CT afterwards for sub school. It'll be nice to have him so close to home for at least the next 4 weeks. He has a car too so getting around Fort Lee won't be a problem.
Well brandon is still bord but has lots of friends. They are still being punished for the guy that came in drunk. Noone can go anywhere! they can't even go to the USO. He hates that fact they have to march everywhere....He is happy he can ware his Civies now. He sounded a little better...They had the first test this week and he made the highest grade in his class! So he was excited about that!
Can u ladies tell me what does my soon have to expect when arriving to ft lee? When he finishes his CS classes is there another graduation before he goes to submarine school? I know at BC there was PIR graduation but what abt afterwards?
When he finishes CS school, there is a small graduation. It is nothing like PIR at GL. If you are "friends" with the CS school on FB, you will see other graduations. Then they will eventually be sent home or to their ship (just depends on their orders).
flyersnut...30 days??? wow...my sailor had ten days.
Anyone know what a normal day is like in CS? Are they allowed to leave on the weekends? What are the barracks like? Just wondering what my son's schedule and environment will be like.. Thanks,
My son had a roomate. Their rooms had a small fridge which was nice. Once they moved over to the trailers after graduation, no fridge. He said the barracks were nice. As for leaving on the weekends, they don't get priviledges for about two weeks. My son stayed on base but they had to be back by midnight (?).
Hi ladies, I'm new to this group. My son is in BC right now and his PIR is 7/8, so excited!! I'm really confused though about where his CS A is supposed to be. I've read that the new CS A School is in Fort Lee, VA but my son keeps insisting that they're sending him to CS School in Great Lakes. From what I've read they closed it down?? Just yesterday he was told he was staying in GL??
Thanks ladies, I had read the discussion link above but my son kept insisting he was staying in GL. DeniseInFla, congrats to you and your new Sailor! I assume he PIR'd yesterday?? Did you get to spend time with him yesterday after PIR? He obviously was a Sat departure then..
Wow I'm reading everyones comments. Wow. U don't see your kids for a year. Wow. That's to be expected eh? After fort lee my sson will be home for a while then after that who knows... Glad your SRs are enjoying their year in the Navy...
Hi everyone I just joined this group. My son is in CS. Started classes last week. He graduated boot camp 02-18-11. He was in FL for awhile and now is experiencing Navy life at a Army base. He is adjusting well and likes it for the most part.

Hi all,
My son is starting culinary school on Monday the 26th and will be graduating in class 220 on 7/29. He is excited to be down there at Fort Lee.
Anyone have a sailor starting classes then?
Anyone know why he os not allowed to drive his car? Keys were taken away when he got there.
Hi All, my son is set to graduate CS School at Ft. Lee on 7/15/11 and just told his dad that he and some buddies went to a mall 5 miles from base. He says school is "ok", that is what he said about HS last year! LOL! His class gets their orders tomorrow, he is hoping for San Diego, close to home. We shall see!
Brandon got Norfolk, that is what he wanted. He could not remember the name of the ship and he does not know if it is at port or out to see. He is going to call me after school he made a beautiful pie! I told him when he comes home he will have to make one for me!
My son got San Diego, he is thrilled as it is close to home. He will be on the USS Preble a destroyer. We are so excited for him, It feels so real now!
So glad to see that your sons are getting their orders. SD is nice....that is great it is close to home. My son is also stationed in SD but on the Ronald Reagan.
Hi everyone, my son is going to Sandiego. He is so excited to head in that direction. He will graduate July 15 from CS school. Yes, it does seem so real now. I hope he will get to come back home to MN before heading to next assignment.
Karen our sons must be together mine graduates on July 15th too. Are you going? We live in NC so I think we may go. He just told me that he is on the USS Donald Cook. From what I understand it is at dock now. Will be deployed in the Fall. (i think)

Johanna...no worries....I'm just a new Navy mom so was trying to be "politically correct." :)
My son told me that there is a big bridge near his new homeport in WA. I'm terrified of bridges.....eek!!!
