Johanna, I am so sorry to hear of his CO passing away. I read a bit on him and that is so sad. One could only assume it was a heart attack, I lost a BIL that way. He dropped dead on their kitchen floor and my sister did CPR in front of their boys. Sadly, he was gone at the age of 49. It will be two years on 02 December, their boys are now 9 and 15 years old. We are still thinking about going down, you are sooo right. It may just be me and the K's, husband is buried with work. He heard yesterday that he will probably have to work on Friday, he is putting in about 85-90 hrs a week right now. My guy is exhausted to say the least. I would love to go down, it may be the K's miss Monday and Tuesday of the week! Then we could have more time with them!!
Diego is right there cooking as well, Kels is able to be with him for a short time during the day. We decided not to go down, we want to get the house ready for them and paint their room and put it together before they get here. We have a few other things to pull together as well. They are good with it, and then we can spend that money on them as well. It seems they are realizing just how things are as adults, money wise. The budgeting process is harder than we think it will be. With our boys doing chef duties, the crew will eat well!!! lol
There were many Sailors on the Enterprise as Diego cooked plenty as well. He and the crew sure ate well on the day. This week is busy for the Enterprise, they are starting all the celebrations for her 50th birthday which was on Friday. Many long hours today and tomorrow, they are hosting veterans that have served on her. Deigo wasn't sure of how things would work, he just knows it will be long days.
Can you just see all that food sitting on the table?? That is quite the visual, huh?
Talked to Diego last night and he is out of the galley. He is now ordering, doing the supplies. One guy "requested" him to work with him, so he is glad to be out of the galley. Though they got a new "boss" and he likes Diego because he is a hard worker and gets things done. He also knows what paperwork that needs to be filed to get D his E-4 status that he should have gotten a few months ago. So, we will see how this guy takes care of things. In the meantime, Diego is overall doing well.
My son was in charge of the galley on Christmas for all 3 meals...he was very happy that all went well, with lots of praise from chiefs, XO's...Awesome!
We had our Sailor home for Christmas, he and Kels celebrated their first wedding anniversary with a house full of their friends. It was great to have them home, Kels surprised us on the 7th, Diego came home on the 20th. They had to head back to Norfolk on the 26th, he had to report back to the ship so the second half of Sailors could go home to their families. I hope all enjoyed having their Sailors home and prayers for safe travels for those coming home soon!!!
Happy (early) New Year everyone!! Hope you all had a nice Christmas. Sailor was home for Christmas, went back to SD on 12/26, and is now on his way back here with his furniture. His ship is going into dry dock up in Bremerton, WA in January for a year. So he and his wife are moving their stuff home....she will live here with her mom for a few months until he finds a place, etc. I loved him being in SD as it was only 6 hours (driving) away. Ah well, I have a new place to visit next summer.
Hey everyone!!!! I'm not new to N4M but I am new to CS. My husband was special warfare but got an injury and switched careers today actually and is under CS now...his orders aren't in yet unfortunately as to when he will be sent to VA. Were from NY...I sill live here and he is stationed in Cali....we really wish we could finally live together ugh...right as we were about to get a non military apartment in Cali I had to call and cancel the paperwork for it because we won't be living there... Anyway he is doing CS on a Sub. Can someone help inform me of the lifestyle? If I should move down to VA while he is in school? I know of a few sub bases including the one in Georgia that my brother lives on..he's a MA3 on the sub base and I love it down there lol so we will see! Thanks!! Xoxoxoxo
Welcome to our new members!!!
Our son didn't start out in CS either. He was working recently and there were some Sailors talking smack about CS's and the food. Well, one person sitting there spoke up and said if wasn't their fault. There shouldn't be any smack talking about any Sailor or the food. They are doing the best they can with what their is. Our Sailor is underway presently, getting ready for long deployment. They better be nice to our Sailors, the feed your rearends. Don't piss off the cooks, ya never know what they might serve up! Lol
Hi, everyone! Haven't checked in for awhile. Hope all your CS's are doing well out in the fleet. Mine told me today he made Watch Captain...Hooyah! He's really in a groove now and ready for deployment soon.
Just found out this morning that my daughter is now the CS for the officers on her ship. I am so proud of her. She is in Japan and she loves it but she also misses home. She says she is nervous about her new position but is happy to be there. I am one proud mama.
Congratulations to those promotions and working in the uppers galley. They do do great!
Our son goes back and.forth between regular galley, Chief's galley and Storage. The guy who works in Storage requested our son to work with him. On Christmas break Diego was in Storage, the Chief was on leave and then the gal that was in charge (don't know her name) put Diego back in the galley. Well, one day the Chief had to do some papers and came back to the ship. He sees our son and asks him what he was doing there. Diego told him so and so told me to work here. So, Chief gets so and so and tells her that our son was ordered to stay in storage. He went on to tell her it was not a request, it was a direct order. So, the next day Diego sees Miss so and so and she wouldn't even look at him. Diego told us this story and we laughed so hard. It was a direct order and she didn't obey it, she won't be doing that again!!!! Diego works long days, they like him in the galley cuz he gets the job done. They call him "Ski" I think. He was called "Chefski" in boot camp. Diego started out "Nuke" and was taken out of the program in June. He signed a new contract for "IT" then a few days later was told it wasn't available and shouldn't have been offered. He was told he "was on 2010 budget and there was no money." He was given the choice of CS or Undesignated. So........this is why he is doing CS. He really wanted Aviation, but high scores on ASVAB, the recruiters pushed Nuke.
Lauren, just to give you a heads up. No one gets "free" food. The Sailors are.charged every day.for their food. It is about $10 a day or about $300 a month and it is taken out of their pay. So, although they are working long, hard hours and get paid for it, they are also paying for their food. It is a good idea to stock them up with snacks and easy foods they can keep in their rooms or racks depending on where they are. My son will soon be deployed and we will be stocking him up with easy stuff that he can keep in his rack. Working long hours doesn't always mean he eats three meals a.day even though he is there.
Lauren, Gotcha!!! Lol Thank you for your service!!!! I wanted to go in, but had braces at that time and they wouldn't take me. They told me to come back when I got them off, but met husband and the rest is history.
I said what I said because you never know who is new or not, if their Sailors share that information with them or not. Hoping I didn't offend you, not my intent. A lot of moms tell me their Sailors don't communicate much less share things with them. Diego was charged monthly even though he was able to go home and eat, or didn't eat at all. That adds up for young people.
Good Morning Everyone! My son just graduated boot camp last Friday, what a day!! I relive it in my mind over and over...he will be headed to CS school this weekend, him and a few others were on hold at GL this week, they've been taking classes there and will arrive in VA soon! I'm very happy there is a special CS group, I enjoy hearing about your sailor's experiences and it's a great place to come for questions! Have a great day!
Thanks so much ladies!! I appreciate it! and WOW! How exciting! So when they are not cooking, they participate in other tasks with their shipmates such as catching pirates!? (As need be, of course!) What an adventure, which I'm sure, like any job in life, has it's ups and downs...but so worth it! What a well rounded experience...I am looking forward to sharing updates and stories with you all =)
Our son has being working in the Chief's mess as well as the regular mess. He has also been requested to work in storage by the one guy who works there. So, he is moved around a bit right now. Not sure how things will work once they are deployed for seven months. Hopefuly, he will get some other temp jobs, he would love to see the sunshine and get some fresh air now and then.
My son graduated boot camp 1 year ago. He left for Florida for A school for IT. Not what he expected. He did have a second choice when the first did not work out. He chose CS school. He loves it. He is on first deployment and likes it for the most part. It took some getting used to. He is on a smaller ship and feels this is a good fit for his first deployment. He works 10 hour days. Has some time to take a class for a college credit. He has volunteered for various duties and keeps busy with different drills. They do not have much down time. I remind him when days get him down, that he is serving one of the basic necessities of life. With out this every person on the ship can not do their work. This rate keeps all of the men and women going each day.
today is my husbands second day of CS school...i am sooooo excited for him!! Can someone tell me about the graduation from CS school & how long it usually takes to get orders from CS school to go to Sub school? thanks :)
to Johanna. Zac mom - i live in a small town New Windsor/Newburgh in Orange County NY. My husband just actually started CS school yesterday ..he was originaly spec warfare but got hurt & switched to CS.. he will be on a sub and is headed to Groton after CS school obv lol I didnt realize how far Groton was until i looked it up on the map..its quiet a drive but to make a weekend trip to see my hubby would be nice. I cant go see him at CS school due to the restrictions and stuff these boys have since they are students. ugh but (hopefully if they have a grad ceremony) i will defff be there.
Hi again =) Awesome insight and information, I'm so thankful! "Missing my sailor" ....your husband must be in the same class as my son....he started on Monday too! I'm so excited to tell him all of the info you all shared...have a great night!!
I will say that the CS school in VA is on a Army base with a lot more rules than the Navy has. They all do things just a little differently. The barracks rooms are larger. I did not see that family could attend the ceremony. I was able to get pictures of my sons graduation. He thought that was pretty cool. I wish you all the best in your CS days ahead.
Hello Burstingwithpride!!! my husband is asking who your son is maybe they are in the same class lol he said there are a couple classes going on so who knows! hopefully they are so we can become friends! lol Well i do know their grad date and for me its about a 5and a half hour drive so i will deff be going :-) hubby said everyone is talking about family being allowed to attend and how they cant wait to see their loved ones..so i asked him to ask his instructor for a definite answer...but even if there isn't a ceremony they do get liberty on the weekend so i could see him then because they wouldn't be "students" anymore. I could fly down there but then I wouldn't have a way to drive around or on the base for the ceremony. thanks for responding back Johanna, Zac mom! i appreciate it :) and yes it sure is a plan for a weekend visit up there...i hear the area is absolutely breath taking! and thanks so much I will be sure to ask for some hot spots when i plan my trip to Groton !!! xoxox
Ps. Bustingwithpride, message me when you accept my add!
We are only 1-1.5 away from Groton but my son didn't want sub school....he would of been so close though! Only time will tell where he ends up! We are definitely going to VA for graduation, but we are driving...10 hours, ugh! But my husband is used to it and very familiar with that drive since he too, was in the Navy and stationed in VA for his 4 years...a LONG time ago! Then, I believe our son gets 2 weeks at home (Yay!) before going to his first duty station...Can't wait!!
Sounds great girls, even if it is a quicky grad, I will still want to be there if allowed...plus he can drive back home with us, saving him travel expenses, bc, correct me if I am wrong, they are responsible for liberty travel? We live in Western MA, Johanna =)
Oh see i dont believe my husband gets leave to come home after this, because he isnt going to a duty station, he is going to Sub School afterwards... but if he is allowed to come home im happy i drove then because we can drive back together!! yayy! im happy for those of you that have your sailors coming home after CS school, hope you all enjoy it!
My son went trought School in Sept-oct....he was able to take leave after graduation..but the leave went againts him, he was negative days on the books. he just now is able to come home before his deployment in March.
Thank you dtarmy06...great to know...my son signed up for some program where he will check in and work with our local recruit office so that the 2 weeks are not counted against him...I forget what it is called but thankfully another Navy mom told me about it so I could have our son sign up...it still has to be approved first but it is looking good!
CS school is at Ft. Lee in VA. It is indeed an Army base, brand new building. The Navy and Air Force are there with the Army of course. Our son told us the "Air Force knows how to treat their people." The class is about seven weeks long, they can't have any visitors, they can't drive their cars or trucks, they are allowed to "start" them once a week for about ten minutes. Our son drove his truck there, he was so made when we couldn't drive it anywhere. They do hold a graduation ceremony, families are allowed to go. Our daughter-in-love drove from S. C. For it, they were able to get a hotel though Kyle wasn't able to spend the night. He had to be back on base at a certain hour. After graduation, he was stuck there for an extra.week due to paperwork not being completed by the Navy. That was so stressful on this young married couple. Finally, he was able to head back to S.C. pack up thief stuff and move to the Norfolk, VA area where he is on serving on the USS Enterprise. He is one proud Sailor to be on that historic making ship. They just returned yesterday morning accreditation being out for a month getting ready for their upcoming seven month deployment. Then, he learns he will be in the Chief's mess on nights, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Not happy about that, but will do a great job. On deployment, he will be working in storage and supply. He likes that better, better hours and not all the attitudes, those not pulling their weight, long hours. At least he will get some down time.
hubs says that he is going to get stuck in VA for prolly the whole month following graduation because he still has to go to Sub school, he isn't going directly to his next duty station...and i am so excited to go down there and see him!! i haven't seen him since we got married, which was only a 3 day leave he had..i miss him lots!! and btw Burstingwithpride, hubs says your son is a great kid !! lol can't wait to see you @ Grad. less then a month left!!! :) I remember when my husband graduated BC months ago, i couldn't explain the excitement and now with this grad approaching I'm beyond excited haha
Missing, I am just now seeing this, haven't logged on since Friday...that is awesome, love it!! I'm beyond excited to see our sailors and meet you too!!
My son got his orders...USS Port Royal, Hawaii! Bittersweet, not sure if we will get out there more than once to see him! Lotter win would be nice! However, we are so happy for him, it was his first pick...
Hi Lauren! Thanks for the great info! I will be sure to look for that fb page. Crazy you mention the decom bc my son's, as far as what we found online in the news, is set to be decommissioned within a year or two! So I was wondering what happens then? Do they stay where they are, but diff ship or could their orders take them somewhere different completely? I'm guessing anything is possible! We will definitely get out there at least once, so expensive, esp for us living on the east coast but we will make it happen! How much was the rental home at that time? If you don't mind me asking...
vicky...PIR was amazing....i couldnt believe my husband was right infront of me as a US Sailor, and after the long wait i could finally go and touch him and kiss him and hug him again! and actually hear this voice for more then a few minutes! lol ill never forget that day! although as soon as grad ended he had to check into ship 5, across the way which took 6 longs hours of waiting around outside the gate for the boys to come out!! my feet were killing me from standing lol but it was well worth the wait.. :)
CS, A school is in Fort Lee VA. On an Army base....rules are extremely strict and my husband is always busy! which is good and bad because it passes the days but also puts a strain on our new..newlywed life, 2 months married on the 29th! :) only spent one day married together before he had to leave again lol but we make it work..got no choice ! my hubbs graduates CS school next Friday along with Burstingwithprides son! we are so excited and anxious! although my husband still has to go to Sub school, him & I just try to stay focused on this all being done with and finally living together.... best of luck to you Vicky and your son...PIR is an awesome time, i hope you save it in your mind forever! haha :)
Vicky, my son had to stay about 10 days in GL, then went to VA. If your son stays in GL, then you should be able to spend the weekend with him after PIR. It will be the most amazing sight to see your son at PIR. I was jumping in my seat. Make surer has you on the list to attend PIR. For some reason, my son left me off but the kind sailor at the door sensed my distress and almost tears and let me in. My husband went to his A School graduation and Brian loved having one parent at two important times in his career. We are both vets, hubby got out after 14 and I stayed the full 20 but we are Air Force. We are both thinking now we went into the wrong service. The Navy treats their people right and they get to see more places than we did!

:) only spent one day married together before he had to leave again lol but we make it work..got no choice ! my hubbs graduates CS school next Friday along with Burstingwithprides son! we are so excited and anxious! although my husband still has to go to Sub school, him & I just try to stay focused on this all being done with and finally living together.... best of luck to you Vicky and your son...PIR is an awesome time, i hope you save it in your mind forever! haha :)
