Sharon Thanks. Joshua is going to ask for the West Coast first. But like you say needs of the Navy first. He says whatever and where ever he is just excited to be part of the Navy!!
Snj, I have to chuckle, our Sailor also wanted west coast from the get go and didn't get it. They sent the 'single' guys to the west coast and the 'married' guys got the east coast. He is hoping to go west coast one day. Lol
My son asked for all around and received orders for Japan! He has good and bad days but overall is enjoying being on the Blue Ridge. Got to speak to him on Friday and skyped yesterday.
Congratulations Johanna and Zac!! That is awesome!!! Things are different for our Sailor, having started somewhere else, going in the Navy as an E-3, then being taken out of that program they took his rating from him as well as his rank. He America to E-1 which he never was. After nine months you automatically become an E-2, though he signed on for another year to be one E-4 and still that took way too many months. Paperwork up and down the ladder, then finally on 21 April it became official. He was able to put on his new rank, he is now Petty Officer 3rd Class. He has been in for a year and half now. It has been quite a journey, he has 3 1/2 years to go and not sure at this time whether he will stay in or not. He really wanted Aviation from the beginning, recruiters geared him towards another area due to his high ASVAB scores. He would love to do something within Aviation, we will see how things play out next year when he can request another rate. You have to say in your rate for two years from what he understand, so we will see.
Hoping your Memorial Day weekend is going well. Thank You to your children for their service and you too for all you do supporting them!!!!
As far as I know, they stay in same rate for two years. But, like you said......'needs of the Navy.' After what our Sailor has been through.......you never know.
Hoping everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend. We hung around home the K's were in and out, so we bought more flowers, stained some wood to put our wrought iron bench together. It really turned out really nice. Sadly, today Korey, Kacy and I went to a funeral. Old neighbors had her mom watching their kids and she was 'Grandma June' to everyone. She passed from cancer, she didn't even look like herself at all. It was so sad how nasty this disease sucks the life out of you. She is free of her pain, though she was so nch to her family.
We had Korey's events leading up to his graduation on Sunday. We had the Christian service at school tomorrow, then the Honors night on Thursday. Korey isn't graduating with Honors, just didn't want to push himself to do it. Can't do anything about it, his journey. We are so proud to see him graduate!!!
Hey ladies, haven't been in is quite some time since my husband finished CS school.. he checks into his submarine today here at subbase New London, Groton CT. His boat is deployed currently, but they still might send him out to meet up with it and finish out the deployment...we have had the best 15 days together since he finished BESS, we moved into our house, settled in and finally got to spend time together and be newlyweds..we are still adjusting to living together lol I have to get useto not working everyday! feel so wired! I'll find a job soon enough :) anyone have a CS sailor abroad the USS New Hampshire?! I'm excited but so nervous for him to come home later and tell me everything about today.. I have been telling myself he is leaving this month just to prep myself for it.. I'd rather be like that then tell myself he is never leaving lol well anyway hope all is well with everyone!
hey everyone, my husband is meeting up with his boat soon...how does the email thing work? he told me i can only send a certain amount of words in one email...is that true? if so Ill be sending him a ton of emails haha he will have plenty of read, he will come back home and still have unread emails.
yea he wont have a phone unless he is in a port and can call...and he wont have compt. time all the time this i know..he just said on a sub there is a limit of how many words each email can have...of course the navy makes things complicated!! lol
Hope everyone is doing well. Our Sailor has been moved out of the galley, he is now doing some Admin work with his CS1. It is a nice break for him. I'm not sure what he is doing for many hrs a day, but he enjoys listening to some music while he works the long hours. Yep, still working long hrs. It seems like that never changes. Lol
My sailor is working in the trash room. He would rather be cooking but everyone has to take a turn there, I guess. They made it safely back to home port in Japan.
my son is on deployment. Has been cooking every day for the breakfast rotation. He says he does not mind the breakfast crowd. He has mastered some dinner items like Turkey ala King. Sounds like he learns new things every day. I look forward to the day he arrives back on US soil. It is hard not having him home, but I know that he is happy with what he is doing. Keeping busy helps each day pass by. Having a great group to connect with also helps.
Karen, I understand how you feel. My son's boat just got back from a two month patrol but he is home based in Japan. I miss him a lot but we talk more often now he's back. Hang in there!
my husband just deployed, he met up with the boat when it was in another port.. this is his first boat. besides getting qualed to be a submariner;..what will he be doing?
Yea on a sub things are different..a crew of 113.. 9 of them being cooks and another 3 are helpers like the cleanup guys. Ffs or something. I forgot what hubby called them.
Ship and subs are a little differant.... My son is on the Uss Enterprise... and is deployed right now... he is working the night shift in the forwad galley...he was in the aft galley. Working from 7pm to 10 am....long nights but on a ship of 5500 sailrs and marines they all have to eat.... 24-7... last i heard it was 95 degrees at night in the galley.....I cant imagin what the days are like.... But my sone loves to cook always has.. so he is learning a lot and enjoying his job
Hey dtarmy, good to *see* ya here!!! Our Sailor is now doing Admin work with one of the CS1's. Out of the Officer's Ward for the time being. That is different galley than the others. No matter what the rates are, they all work very long hours. There is good and bad in that though. Pulling 100 hr weeks is not good for the mind and body!!! Pretty much, eat, sleep and when they do get a day off, they usually spend it sleeping!! Our Sailor tries to work out as much as possible too.
Missing, you are thinking of FSA's, they are those that rotate through learning all aspects of different rates. I an not sure how ling they each stay in one area, hut our Sailor had a couple when he was in the galley.
Sharon yes FSA's!! those are them...on the sub he makes the 9th cook and there are also 3 FSA's lol thank you! i can imagine how long his days are. i feel bad i wish i was there to help him !! since i wont be hearing from him in awhile, all i do it worry! even when i am busy i worry about him and hope he is okay. lol I baby him when he is home especially since we just got to move into our own home after all these months. it was sad to see him go so soon! But i cant wait till he is home so i can baby him more and more lol he is going to be soo happy! i have been decorating and painting and being so busy with the house!!! He wont recognize it when he comes home haha
Our Sailor is busy every day even if he is out of the galley. He is the one that checks in new people into the department, still very long hours. Now, he is having problems sleeping. I am not sure why, he should be exhausted! It doesn't matter what you do, you are working long hours. It is good to know that he is now at the half way point of deployment. We can't wait for Homecoming, the Tiger Cruise for his dad and brother to spend a few days with him and the boat. This will be one historic event, so proud to be a part of it.
Hoping all is well with your Sailors, all is well with each of you too!!! Prayers that all stay cool and these fires get put out. So sad, so many affected.
No, I am not going on the Tiger Cruise. I wouldn't do well with small, tight places. I am good with the boys going with Diego, though if he can get a female to sponsor Kacy, she may go as well. I will stay with Kels and watch them come in.
My son graduates this Friday from Basic!! It has been a fast long 8 weeks! He will be going to CS school. When we talk to him he says that there is still a CS school at Great Lakes. Are the RDC's not informed or did they re-open a school at Great Lakes? I see a class just graduated from CS in VA, does anyone know how long he maybe in limbo before a class gets filled? Also will he be on hold in Great Lakes or VA? Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance!!
CS school is in VA...they might be on hold in GL before arriving at Ft Lee..also he might be on hold in Ft Lee too..ACU which is awaiting to class up, for CS school in this case..my husband said being there is worse then being in BC you have no freedoms, they left base two times, once when i was there the night before grad, and the day before that they took a taxi. the base in the middle of no where and there is always night studies and stupid stuff to do..so getting liberty phases take forever... and also there isnt internet, my husband had a hot spot when he was there. My husband and his friends were so happy to be done with CS school and onto sub school!! At the grad they play a video of all pics taken during CS school and OMG it was hilarious! the class work looked boring (kids sleeping in class in the pics) and then in the kitchen the pics were so funny!! My husband is currently on his first deployment, he is on a submarine. Were stationed in Groton CT. when my husband went to CS school he was a buds drop from SWCC school (spec.ops) he got hurt so he went CS...he was on hold once he got to CS school for about 2 weeks, then class started. dont ever listen to the RDC's ..they lie just like recruiters! once your son is in long enough, he will look back and agree haha Enjoy Bootcamp grad, its summer and those grads are a lot better then the winter ones from what i hear..both my hubby and bro graduated in winter. Have fun and take pics!!! I swear, there is no better feeling then seeing your sailor right in front of you after so long!
my hubby liked going to Chicago with the guys..they were on hold in GL before going to Cali for over 2 weeks, so every chance they got, they made sure to get away from "great mistakes" they call it. I remember seeing pics of my husband and his buds sleeping on the train because they would go right when they got off duty...Ft Lee is only suppose to be 7 weeks, but if on hold there before classing up..it can turn into a lot longer unfortunately.. But dont put the cart before the horse, let your son & you enjoy Great Lakes before taking on the next adventure!!
Thank you ladies for all the insight! One more question... Can he take his phone with him? He asked me to bring it but not sure if he can take it with him.
once out of BC, yes he can have his phone, laptop ipods etc...I also brought my husbands fav pairs of boxers and baseketball shorts to have for the rest of his time being in GL..that way he doesnt have to wear tighy whities the Navy issues and also when he got to wear civis he has his fav shorts..in the middle of winter!! haha And also when we were in the hotel room the weekend he graduated, he changed out of uniform and wore the shorts..in public they MUST be in uniform..behind closed doors, where no Navy ppl can see..they can wear whatever lol
Snj, they ship everything, andi mean EVERYTHING, home when he goes to basic. Bring his phone with you when you go to PIR. After he moves over to his temp dorm, then he can have it.
This was posted on Facebook today and i wanted to share it with you all!!! Im so proud of my son.....
By USS Enterprise (CVN 65)
A note from the Command Master Chief:
Dear Enterprise friends and family It’s been an exciting week onboard the Big E! First, the “Messlords”, a group of celebrity chefs flew out for a visit. These four business-owning chefs, featured on the Food Network, traveled to Enterprise, where they had the chance to work with the ship’s Culinary Specialists and experience life at sea! Michael Hardin, known as “Hodad”, owns Hodad’s Burgers emphasized that they were here to meet the Sailors on board and to show off a little bit of their food. Joining “Hodad” were Sarah Simington, owner of the Blue Moon Café in Baltimore, “Stretch” Rumanerh, of Grinders in Kansas City, and Panini Pete Blohme, from Panini Pete’s in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. With assistance from the ship’s CS’s, the four cooked dinner for the crew on the 18th, to rave reviews from crewmembers.
Thanks for posting the info on the Celebrity Chefs, Our Sailor was on that worked with them though he isn't in any of the pictures. I was bummed, he said it was really cool though! I think it is great that the Command Master Chief writes and posts messages, it helps everyone.
WOHOO! its August 1st! I hope these weeks fly by! Happy August 1st everyone!!!
BEC2012 is your son going on a sub or a ship?
http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=68348 , thats my husband boat and i thought this was soo sweet...we currently have NO COM, blacked out for over 2 months now..and its not over, so i pray my husband is doing well and then this was posted. I love it! had to share with my CS family.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our Sailor!!!! He is 20 years old and I sure hope they have Apple pie on the boat's menu today. It is one of his favorites and the birthday before he headed to boot he requested one and this momma made one from scratch!!! He loved it too!!!! I am not sure if they make any apple pies when they are deployed, but I can still hope he gets one. Lol
Sharon Happy Birthday to your son!!! may he be blessed with many more happy, healthy & safe ones!! xoxo and apple pie sounds delicious right now, i hope he had a big fat piece today (if they have it on the menu) haha
Thank you, missingmysailor!!! I have not found out if he got any apple pie yet. We sent him two birthday boxes, he got them the day after. We filled them full of goodies, he will be able to share with others.
Johanna, glad Zac will be home soon. Those sea trials are short, not far from land, and yet so necessary.
Hi Gina, Congratulations to Nico and wanting to learn to cook. Yep, they get to eat what they cook. So, if it doesn't turn out right, they still get to eat it. Lol Hope he enjoys the program. We didn't go down for our Sailor's graduation, so I am of no help on that one. Remember though, it is an Army base and different than our Naval bases. Have him ask and I am sure he will get the correct information. Wishing him all the best!!!
Hii Gina!! I am not a Navy mom, however my husband iis CS on a submarine.. i went to his graduation :) It was soo much fun! not many people attended sadly, but its worth it when the pics of our CS's are displayed on the big screen and my husband is sleeping in class, or him and his buddies are flexing their muscles with their cooking utensils in hand hahaha It in an Army base, totally different from Naval operations..my husband said they had more freedoms in Bootcamp!! I stayed off base at a hotel down the street..Hilton maybe? It was a gorgeous affordable hotel.. i drove down from NY the night before..which was nice because i got to go out to the mall with him & his friends that night!! There might be a hotel on base..i am not sure. the base is HUGE though...and the day my husband graduated, the Army had a CS graduation also..so we (ppl attending our grad) were sent to the Army one, not the Navy one..which was a HUGE hassle..literally we were on the opposite side of the base!!!! I happened to be so lost driving and ran into 2 nice soldiers in a rush to get somewhere but stopped to help me..perfect directions and correct location! When i got there, everyone looked at me, my husbands friends from the night before started making noises to me, my husband was talking to someone and didnt even notice, until one of his friends tapped him lol then he got all excited i was there and swoooped me up and planted a wet one on me! HAHA then all the guys & girls started with the cheers hahahah it was very entertaining. the morning was hell due to being lost on a huge base..but it was worth it :) when it came time to leave, we thought we had the weekend to ourselves because his original orders said he would go to sub school on that Tuesday. well, right after grad ended they handed out actual written orders. He had to be up here in CT by Sunday! lucky me, i got to drive him and his buddy, with a completely packed car..due to them having previous schools for diff careers..they complied a lot of stuff! I drove all the way back to NY, surprised my inlaws by bringing their son home..i was exhausted!! in the past 36 hrs i had drove from NY-VA Va-NY lol we crashed at my inalws that night, and on Saturday I drove them to Groton CT. which was a crazy weekend for me..but totally worth it. we are now stationed here and he is currently deployed but its almost over :) After being black for so many months i got to talk to him the other day for the first time since he left, now that they are in port...he said he likes his job, its easy & can be fun!! he told me he has a ton of burns on his hands and some cuts. he actually almost cut his finger off! so yea, he needs to come home already haha Ask your son about info for the base.. you are dealing with the Army and things are totally different.
Hi, my name is Terri and my son is at Fort Lee and started A school August 6. He is really enjoying A school and he loves the hands on classes. He will be going to Groton CT for sub school after CS school. Not sure when his sub school actually starts.
Hi everyone. Welcome to all the new members of this group. My sailor is assigned to the Reagan and recently his job changed to Maintenance. :( Has anyone sailor had their job changed from CS to this? He is hoping to get back to CS but isn't sure when it will happen.
hi tam1960 welcome! my husband is CS on a submarine! we are actually stationed here in Groton CT where sub school is..he is attached to the USS New Hampshire and is currently out at sea...if you have any questions about sub school or things, just ask! I finally got word from my husband last week after a few months of no contact...he explained to me what life is like on the sub when working & also when off..God Bless all subbys! i could never do that!

Junebug (Ship 2 Div 918)
Hi everyone. Welcome to all the new members of this group. My sailor is assigned to the Reagan and recently his job changed to Maintenance. :( Has anyone sailor had their job changed from CS to this? He is hoping to get back to CS but isn't sure when it will happen.
