Jn/Jf Mom: At least you still have the youngest home to mother for a few more years!

Anna:  Did your daughter get her wings?

  • J/J Mom

miss deb -- my 92 year old father-in-law commissioned our daughter.  He wore a suit & his old sailor cap.  Everyone loved it!  Have seen several get commissioned by retired personnel in civilian suits with no covers, perfectly acceptable.

Helomom -- great reading about your son & his fabulous wife.  Cu-dos to both of them.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes for our officers!

M's mom, you are correct about the youngest - and i thank God about that every day.

The weather did hold out on the second day & solo was a success.

After a few hiccups (missed very tight connection at JFK & airline lost luggage) dd is settling in at the Navy lodge as i type.

  • miss deb

    Hi Jn/Jf

We had our private commissioning last weekend … you are absolutely right! … it doesn't matter the dress, but the highlight of the event. My husband learned the marine corps summer dress blues regs had changed since he was on active duty, but was able to pull it together to meet the new dress code. I wouldn't have fit in any clothing so many years ago . But he did!

What a wonderful, memorable event it became. I am so awed and appreciative of the young men that made it so fabulous for all of us and to show such appreciation of all military members.

We are off to the next stage. We are hurriedly packing to see him off to Norfolk,VA. I am so proud of all of our young men and women.

  • Rita

    Hi Moms!

My son left yesterday and drove to Pensacola. He was on OHARP for a few weeks.  He said he is the only one from his 13-15 class that has to report by 8-21.  Everyone else has OHARP a full 12 weeks.  I'm so proud of him. We are ready to start this process.  I hope he finds housing ok.

  • M's mom

Rita:  Congrats to your son!  If he's headed to P'cola, he must be in aviation?   Be sure to join the "Naval Aviation" group here on N4M's.  Those Moms can answer any questions you will have about flight school.

As for housing in P'cola, there are aviators coming and going all the time, so there are always folks looking for roommates.

  • Marmie

And tell your son to take advantage of the early arrival to Pcola to start studying and getting the lay of the land.  My LO was down there early and used it to prepare for the next round of training (and don't forget the PT!).  Congrats.

  • Rita

He is in aviation.  Thanks for the tip M's Mom.  I didn't realize there was a "Naval aviation" group on here. I'm hoping the roommate situation works out like you stated.  He said the same thing.

I'm sure he will do just that Marmie.  He bought a membership to the university rec center here to keep training while home.  Thanks! I'm excited to make my way over there sometime while he's there. (I'm in Texas, about 10 hours away.)

  • J/J Mom

Rita - Congrats to your son!

M'sMom is right, people coming & going all the time in Pens.  When our son was moving there he found his roommates on some facebook page for aviators.

  • proudmom

Hello ladies! I just now joined this group and I want to introduce myself. My son is almost finished with his first year of flight training in FL. He might be in Corpus Christi for his second year; I'm praying for Corpus since I'm only 3 hours away in Austin. I work part time as a therapist. I also have a daughter who lives in NC. I plan to move to NC next year; I want to live closer to my daughter. Unless my son is in Corpus, if so I'll stay put until he moves on. I'm looking forward to being together with other Navy Moms!

  • LindaB

Welcome, Proudmom. Where in North Carolina does your daughter live, or where in the state would you be interested in moving? We're in Piedmont North Carolina, and our Navy son has a house in Currituck County, not far from Norfolk, Va. He's stationed in Annapolis now, though, so his house is rented out.

  • proudmom

My daughter is living in my hometown, Durham. I want to live in either Durham or Chapel Hill, my alma mater.Last Oct. was a very busy time for AJ, my son.  He and his girlfriend had a beautiful baby boy, my first grandchild.at the same time they moved from Tallahassee to P'Cola to begin flight training.

  • LindaB

I teach one class in the journalism school at Carolina, so I drive there two days a week.  I'm a Wake Forest grad, but I love the UNC campus and Chapel Hill in general. Congratulations on the grandson!

  • proudmom

Wow teaching at the best journalism school in the nation! I might be a little biased! I am looking forward to moving back to my old stomping grounds. I decided I should live close to the rest of my family because who knows where AJ might land...literally Lol!

  • Noni

Welcome proudmom! What type of therapist are you? I work in special ed. I also have a handicapped daughter. My daughter in the navy is a officer on the USS Princeton, in San Diego.
  • proudmom

I'm a certified peer specialist working for National Alliance for mental Illness (NAMI). I work mostly with adolescents and their parents. I've also worked as an advocate for children with special needs. I was more or less a liason between the school and the parents. I helped the parents be proactive when writing their child's IEP. I worked with many special ed teachers;they were terrific; I have a great deal of respect for the work you do. where do yo live? I'm in Austin TX.

  • Paymaster

    Welcome proudmom!

  • M's mom

Welcome proudmom.  Be sure to also join the group "Naval Aviation"  here on Navy for Moms.

  • J/J Mom

Welcome proudmom! Our son is in Corpus in Primary.

  • Noni

Proudmom....It takes a special person to do your job as well. I live about 7 miles away from Great Lakes Naval Base in Illinois. Did your son atend OCS in Newport RI? My daughter WAS class 02-15 Hotel at OCS.
  • proudmom

Noni...My DS was in NROTC at FSU; now he is in primary flight training in P'cola. I'm hoping my DS goes to Corpus next since I'M only 3 hours away. I live so far from P'Cola that I haven't seen my son since his commissioning spring of 2014. I did, however, get to visit with my grandson in January. It was wonderful! When did you last see your daughter? How do you keep in touch? Phone? Email? Text?

  • Noni

    Proudmom,
The last time i seen Monica was a few weeks ago. My mother was having surgery and she wanted to see her in case she didn't make it out. Before that we seen her for a week in SD.over my spring break. I txt her a lot. We talk on the weekends and we FaceTime. When she's abroad I send messages to her ships email. It's hard being so far away. When she departs, I watch SanDiego live. She will send me little messages that I know she going or gone. It's awesome to Watch the ships come in and out. Has your son completed his solo flight yet?
  • proudmom

Noni...Sounds like you are doing your best to keep in touch. My DS has had several solo flights. He usually calls me afterward he's so excited. I sure do miss him! I hope that someday I get to see the ships coming in and out. Is FaceTime like military Skype?

  • Anna

    Noni,

Congratulations to your daughter.  If you are interested I run a group called Moms of Daughters 2 and you are certainly invited to join.  We have new moms, seasoned moms, and even veteran moms.  Once a Navy mom - always a Navy mom.  We have enlisted daughters and officer daughters, including mine.

I do need to caution you though not to post last names on this website.  It is in violation of OPSEC rules and it is designed to keep our sailors and families safe.  Copy your post, edit out the last name, and repost it and then you can send that info in a private message.

  • Noni

    Anna,
Sorry about the last name trying to delete off my phone, but will have to do it at home on my computer. I belong to your group, I just don't get on there much.
  • Anna

    Noni,

I thought I recognized your screen name!!!  I understand it's hard to edit from smart phones.

I used to live in Waukegan back a couple years ago.

  • Noni

    Anna,
What a small world! Where in Waukegan did you live?
  • Anna

    Noni,

We lived in the apartment complex right off 43, across and down from the Northpoint Shopping Plaza.  Very near the Sundance where Sarge does his meet and greets now!!!  I loved seeing all the sailors and the brand new recruits every weekend out with their families, knowing they just had their PIR!!!!

  • 1after909

    Hello,

My son is currently stationed in Jacksonville.

I live in the far west suburbs of Chicago.

  • Noni

1after909, your son is a officer, so is my daughter. Did he graduate from Newport? What part of Illinois do you live. I see your in the west of Chgo. I'm North of Chgo.
  • 1after909

    Hello Noni,
Yes, my son did graduate from Newport on Oct. 10, 2014. I live west of Chicago.
  • Noni

    1after909
Funny my daughter graduated Oct. 31, 2015 from Newport. She is stationed at 32 ave in Ca. She is a SWO/REDO
  • Noni

    SWO/EDO
  • 1after909

    Noni
My son is in Jacksonville, FL. He is a NFO.
  • Anna

    1after909,

I'm living in Jacksonville for the winter.  Which base is your son at?  My daughter is an NFO also but is stationed in Oklahoma.

    Noni,

How is life up there in the Chicago area?!?!  I have to admit I don't miss being there this winter!!!!

  • Jake's Mom

Hi all - My son is stationed in San Diego on an LCS crew.

  • 1after909

    Anna
Life is cold up here in Chicago!
My son lives off base. Maybe because guys are different, he doesn't tell us a lot--at all! I honestly, I don't know which base in Jacksonville!
  • Noni

    Anna,

When did you leave for Fl.? The winter has been seasonably warm. January
  • Noni

    1after909,
Not a officer I know lives on base. My daughter doesn't talk much either. I feel like I don't even know her anymore.

    Anna,
I started to say January has been horribly cold. Below zero days the past few weeks.
  • Noni

    Hi Jakes Mom,

When did your son get to San Diego? He is stationed at 32 Avenue?
  • Anna

    Noni,

My husband and I are full time RVrs and live in our 5th wheel RV.  We left Wisconsin a year ago December and spent all of 2015 traveling the western US going to every major National Park.  We then headed to Virginia to visit the sailor son before he and his family transferred to Hawaii.  From there we made our way to Florida to winter over.  Won't do winters anymore where it's freezing and snowy!!!!!!!!  As soon as the north gets into spring we'll travel the east coast this year and head up to Bar Harbor, Maine.

  • Noni

    Anna,

I'm so jealous!! We used to have a 32 ft pull behind. Just sold it this year. With the kids gone we didn't need a bunk house. We will be looking of a driver in the next couple of years. This Christmas was really hard. The girl was home for 10 day. Then the day she was to fly out her flight was cancelled due to the ice storm. That gave me 7 more days with her. When she left I had a really had time. No more extended stays. These hello and goodbyes just keep getting harder. For spring break we were going to visit her in Cali but they are getting ready for RIMPAC so we wouldn't see her. Looking to visit a friend in SC
  • M's mom

Anna,  I am also jealous of your travelling lifestyle!  (Especially winters in Fla.--I'm a Midwesterner too.)  Hubby and I travel quite a bit when we can, but I'll be working for several more years, so not ready to be full-time vagabonds yet.  I've been to Bar Harbor, Maine.  You'll love it.  The people are so friendly!  Go to a "lobstah" boil.  Acadia Nat'l Park is beautiful in the fall. (Also off-season, so less crowded.)  Safe travels!

Did your daughter finally get her NFO wings?

  • 1after909

    Noni,
Re: "I feel like I don't even know her anymore."
I feel that way too, sometimes. I suppose such young accomplished people let time get away from them!
  • Noni

    1after909,

Tonight he called, I asked the common "what are you doing" she was grocery shopping. Next line was how was your day's? I got if we're going to talk about work I'm saying goodbye. I answered by saying goodbye. Every conversation is like this. Finally told her when she wants to talk and carry an adult conversation, not let me know. With me here in Illinois and her in San Diego, we have nothing to talk about
  • Noni

We used to be able to edit .....what happen to it?
  • 1after909

    To Noni

They will be easier to talk to someday. My older sisters have a closer relationship with their older adult daughters.
  • Jake's Mom

I  just know he is at teh San Diego base, not sure is 32 Avenue. He has been there since last June. He commissioned in May while at Penn State. He was in the NROTC program for 4 years. He has had a great experience and seems to really enjoy San Diego.

  • Anna

    1after909,

I also went through the "hardly know her anymore" with one of my girl's.  It's better now, so hopefully it will work out for you and Noni!!!!!  I think it's a growth thing, but I'm no psychologist!!!!!!!

    noni,

I understand hating those goodbys!!!  Our traveling really came out of the work my husband was doing the last 12 years.  He was like a self employed contractor but would work a contract for 6 months to a year and then leave and go to the next one.  For the first 9 years he lived and worked wherever and I stayed in one place until the twin daughters got through high school, then I went on the road with him.  We would move at least every year.  So we sold the last house we owned, downsized all we could and just moved from one job to another.  Sometimes one of our kids would come visit us but most times we would go see and stay with them!!  Still hated goodbyes even when it was me leaving!!!!  So there really wasn't much different when we got the 40' 5th wheel and went on the road full time.  Still managed to visit each kid last year!!!!!

    M's Mom,

Thank you for asking about Jenn!!!  She finally got her thyroid stabilized with the proper dose of synthetic medication and had to have 3 blood tests 6 weeks apart that were "normal".  She finally got off med hold (after a year and a half) and was approved to remain in the aviation community.  So just this week she transferred back to the training squadron to finish up and get those wings.  Should take her 2 to 3 months to brush up on all she's accomplished so far but hasn't seen or touched in over a year, plus learn all the new changes since a year ago.  So she is on her way, but we won't really know how much this hiccup will affect her long term career since now she is a year behind where she should be.  We'll just have to wait and see what her future brings.

    Jake's Mom,

My other daughter enlisted right out of high school, did her 4 years and got out.  She used her GI Bill to put herself through Penn State and just graduated in December with her BS and did it all in three years!!!  Gotta love having an PSU alumni!!!!!

  • M's mom

Anna,  So glad to hear that your daughter is well, and back on track!   With all she's been through, I'm sure it will be a relief to her to get back to flying.  I'm sure she'll catch up.

You may have to spend next winter in Hawaii (too bad!) if your son is stationed there now!

My son returned to the States in June after a ten-month cruise on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, mostly in the Persian Gulf.  He was able to take some leave in August and he and his wife came home and stayed with us for a week.  It was wonderful to "mother" them both for a few days, because they moved to Japan on Jan 5th.  Son will be doing something intel-related, (We don't ask and he doesn't tell.) at the Headquarters of the Joint U.S. Forces in Japan at Yokota Air Base, near Tokyo. They are loving Japan so far, and have been exploring in Tokyo.  We hope to visit sometime during his 3 years there.  I just hope they don't produce any grandbabies while there---it's so FAR away!!!

  • Anna

    M's mom,

So happy he is doing well and gets to go to Japan with his wife!!!  That at least makes it nice that he's not there alone!!  I hope you do get that visit.

Sailor Son will be gone on a deployment most of this year and when they all get back the whole squadron is moving to Whidbey Island.  We will try to schedule our visit for there!!!

Jennifer is excited to get this training finished finally!!!
