Anna-You will absolutely love it up here in western Washington. Whidbey is a great base. You and your husband need to get your RV up here!
  • Helomom

It's always interesting to see where all of your kids are located. Our son has been stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA., Pensacola, FL., Corpus Christi, TX., NAS North Island Coronado, CA., Norfolk, VA., Jacksonville, FL., and Newport, RI. Some places more than once. He's been on the Essex, Tarawa, Truman, and Vinson. Plus an IA with NATO/ISAF in Afghanistan. 19 years in and at least 6 years to go if all is well. It's quite a life.
  • M's mom

Anna,  MY son was stationed at Whidbey Island for 2 1/2 years before he left on the Vinson with his squadron!!!   I think you said your son was in Intel?  My son was an intel officer with a squadron of Growler planes at Whidbey. Your son might be doing the same thing mine was at the same base!  Small world!!

As Helomom posted, you must visit Whidbey Island!  The view from the high bridge going from the mainland to the island is incredible.  Oak Harbor is a nice town.  Take some time to see Seattle also--the Space Needle, Pike Place Market (where they throw fish!)

  • M's mom

Helomom,  Seems like a long time ago that our sons were on the Vinson together!   I remember reading an article you posted about your son.  He's had quite an impressive career in the Navy!  Sounds like he's on track to make Admiral before he retires. Maybe then he'll be able to settle down in one place for a while!

  • Anna

    Helomom and M'smom,
I agree WA is s beautiful place to visit and it is on our 2016 travel list. My sailor daughter was stationed at Kitsap and I got to visit twice. Did a little of Seattle, took a ferry, did the needle and Pukes Peak market. Always wanted to see more so I'll get that chance when Son gets there. Hubby and I were stationed at NAS North Island so that is my favorite base. Officer daughter was at Pensacola and I got to visit there. Son was also at Norfolk and Oceana so I've been there a few times.
Yes M'smom, he is Intel with P3s right now and the whole squadron is moving to WA.
  • Anna

LOL, that should be Pikes Peak. That's what I get for forgetting my glasses!!!!!
  • Helomom

M's mom - Right now we are just hoping for Captain. LOL. As he is a helicopter pilot with a Bachelors degree in Nursing, Admiral would be a miracle. No...beyond a miracle.

Anna - We are in Kitsap County! And you had me laughing out loud with that typo. Pike Place Public Market, a fascinating place. You can find almost anything there.
  • Anna

    Helomom,

I was typing that message quickly as hubby and I were waiting to have the truck looked at, and just in the middle of my message they called us!!!  Always the case isn't it.  Then I'm doing it on my smart phone - small screen, and with no reading glasses!!!  I should have just waited!!!!  Then after, I realized I said Pikes Peak instead of Pike Place.  Three strikes - - - I'm out!!!!!   btw, Pikes Peak is a mountain in Colorado Springs that hubby and I went to the top, twice, once by cog train!!!  What an experience!!!!

Oh, and miracles can happen - never say never!!!!!!

  • Helomom

Wow, Anna! What great adventure! We are heading out on our first big post-retirement road trip next month.

    Noni
I am in Elgin on Fridays. Is that a convenient location for you? I'd love to meet!
  • Trojans12

Hello everyone! So my son is waiting to hear if he will be accepted into OCS school for aviation. All paperwork is in and he passed the Aviation test. Does anyone have any info on how long or how the process is?
  • jsefamily

    Hi, Jamie L! Welcome!

My DS was in OCS class 01-15 , so he graduated a little about 18 months ago. If all your paperwork is in and submitted all the way through the admin steps, the longest he will wait is approximately three months. They have a review board every three months or once they have enough to have a review, whichever comes first. It's usually every three months though because they have a board with busy schedules. Any wait is hard though, I remember.

Although there is a lot of nonsense and puffery there, too, a useful website for information is www.airwarriors.com. My son never joined it, just read it for info. Some recruiters encourage it, others don't mention it. Remember, some info is puffery, but most is helpful. It's an encouraging group.

    Good luck!
  • M's mom

    Jamie L,

After your son is accepted to OCS, it still may be a while before he is told to report to OCS.  Sometimes they are given a report date, and then it is postponed.  Sometimes, it is moved up unexpectedly.  My son was accepted to OCS in  February of his senior year of college back in 2012.  He was told that there would not be space for him in OCS until December, so he was trying to figure out what to do for 7 months after graduation, when he got a call from his recruiter the last week of March saying he was to report to OCS in June!!!!    Hurry up & wait; it's the Navy way.  We Navy moms have to get used to it.

Good luck to your son.  Hope you hear good news soon!

  • nightnurse613

My son is stationed on Gitmo and will be coming home soon then he is headed to Italy. He has been in the Navy approx. Five years and I am so proud of him.

  • M's mom

,nightnurse613:  You will have to make plans to visit your son in Italy and be given the grand tour!  My son has been in the Navy for four years and is presently stationed in Japan.  Hubby and I hope to visit him there next summer!

  • Anna

    nightnurse613,

My son is currently deployed to Sicily!

  • J/J Mom

    Anna -

Our dd is in Sicily!  She loves it there -- especially the local food!  Can't wait to go in December :)

  • Anna

    Jn/Jf,

How cool!!!  I know there is no way we could ever get to visit unless we win the lottery!!!  Is your dd at Signonella?  That's where our son is!

  • Trojans12

My son was supposed to hear something yesterday or today to see if he made OCS. Nothing yet. Chief at his recruiting office said he is traveling to Meps tomorrow and that he will check on things. Anyone have any insight on how this process works?
  • M's mom

    Trojans12,

"Hurry up & wait" is pretty much how it goes in the Navy, as well as the rest of the military.  Notification dates/orders are very much subject to change at the last minute.  The sailors and their families have to resign themselves to it.

Hope your son hears good news soon!  If not, he can re-apply at a later date.  Tenacity is seen as a virtue.

  • Trojans12

Thank you M's mom, my son will be leaving for BC in one week as enlisted but applied for OSC also.

  • Trojans12

M's mom.. We they tell you a yes or a no?
  • NuclearOPSMom

Shopgirl - I hope to meet you in Newport - my son is graduating from OCS next week also. He graduated college in December of 2015 and we too were pushing for a career plan B, but I guess we have to just put our kids (men and women) in God's hands and trust has plan for them.  He too knew this was the plan for him.  I am sure all Mom's can relate - we are beaming with pride.

  • topdog1p

Trojans12 My son started out the enlisted route in aug of 2014 in oct of 2014 he had a higher up that pulled his file and had him start the OCS app. He still was slated to go to BC but the chief recruiter kept pushing back his date to go to BC untilOCS answer came through. It was a long wait he finally was accepted in May of 2015. It was well worth the wait he was commissioned sept of 2015 and is now on his way to becoming a Nuke

Shopgirl and NuclearOPSMom congrats on the new officers enjoy OCS graduation i teared up just remembering how my son looked the first time i got to see him in person dress in his whites coming out to onto the parade field for graduation. It is such a proud moment :)

  • NuclearOPSMom

I know it is hard to try to recognize each other without giving personal information that would violate the rules and safety of our loved ones.  I am Debbie and I hope we can find each other to meet.

  • Anna

    Shopgirl and NuclearOPSMom,

You two could private message each other and exchange phone numbers or other info - no one can see those messages except you.  Enjoy!!!!!

  • Trojans12

Does anyone know if the board came up with any decisions on who they are accepting in OCS. My son was told he would have a decision by Friday at the latest today. He is supposed to leave for BC tomorrow if not accepted! He is extremely anxious and so are we as parents. It would be nice to hear a yes or no!

  • ITgal

Trojans12, I'm so sorry for the anxiety.  I know it's a lot of stress.  My son went in Nuke, so the decision was made at the 2 day selection test/interview and he was sworn in and signed on the spot.  I'm sorry I'm not able to help with any insight on your son's process.  Try to hang in there.  We'll be thinking of you.

  • Anna

    Trojans12,

Sorry I don't have any info for you but a couple questions - does his recruiter know he is waiting for word to be accepted to OCS??  Second, if his recruiter knows, will he/she contact your son at RTC if he ends up going to BC before he gets word??  I would hope that if he gets approved bc will release him and let him go to OCS!!!  Let us know what happens!!

  • Trojans12

Anna, yes his recruiter is waiting also. They don't understand what the hold up is. They hope to hear something at the recruiting station when we drop him off tomorrow. They said there is a chance they could get up to Meps station s hear something while he is there. My nerves are going crazy, my daughter is in BC as we speak. She just left May 11th. Two of my babies leaving the house!
  • Anna

    Trojans12:

Any updates?  I think we're all hoping and cheering for him to be going to OCS.  Let us know what has happened when you have a chance.

  • anniebananie55

To T's momma - I am so sorry to hear about your son's disqualification. I am hoping that waiver will turn out to help him. My son went through something similar in his OCS experience in the fall of 2014. Three days from graduation, he was told he could not be a pilot because of a respiratory related issue from his early college days that they had known about since Day 1.. He was beyond devastated as were we and I felt so helpless being so far away. While it was one of the hardest thing he has had to go through so far, it turned out to be a very good experience, He was able to find another community and graduate with his class. He has been happy and successful and may always feel a bit cheated, but he has learned to deal with it. I encourage your son to talk to every medical professional he can find, talk to anyone in charge, find out what his other options could be. Can he get a waiver? Can he reapply at a later date? What else can the Navy do to support him/keep him in? If he made it this far, they obviously think he has something to offer the Navy. I will say a prayer for him and for you...

  • M's mom

T's momma:  So sorry to hear of your son's medical DQ.  Hope he can get a waiver.   My son had a similar experience to anniebananie55's son in OCS.  He passed TWO MEPS physicals with flying colors prior to starting OCS. He also went in as a pilot candidate.  At OCS, he was given a "flight physical" which is apparently more rigorous, and they found that he has a minor heart valve anomaly, which is not life-threatening, but it DQ'd him for pilot or NFO.  He was pretty upset, but was given a medical waiver to stay in the Navy and complete OCS, and he was able to transfer to Intelligence, which he enjoys.

Far be it for me to second guess the United States Navy, but it would be kinder to these patriotic young men and women to give them the flight physicals and go over their medical histories BEFORE they are ever accepted to OCS, to avoid dashing their hopes after they start.

It would also be nice if the military made it openly known what medications, etc. would DQ someone from the services.  When my son was in elementary school, his teachers told us he should be on medicine for ADD.  (In retrospect, I think he was just bored.)   We knew that a friend's son had been refused admittance to the military because he had been on ADD meds, so we refused to medicate our son, in case he ever had military hopes.  He did fine without, so I'm glad we refused.  But we wouldn't have known that without our friend's experience, so it's frustrating that family physicians don't have this knowledge, so they can advise parents about medication choices.  Just my humble opinion, Mr. Secretary of the Navy!

  • anniebananie55

To M's Mom - my son ended up in Intelligence as well, OCS class 02-15. He is currently deployed to Japan. Where is your son?

  • M's mom

anniebananie55:  My son graduated in OCS class 16-12 in Sept 2012.  After Intel School, he was stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station near Seattle for 2 1/2 years, then spent 10 months in the Persian Gulf on the carrier USS Carl Vinson, and as of January, he has been stationed in Japan also!!!  He and wife are at Yokota.  Your son?  Last week my son got to see Air Force One land at Yokota when Pres. Obama went to Japan for the G7 Summit.

That would be crazy if our sons were both at Yokota and know each other!   When my son was at Whidbey Island, he worked intel with a squadron of Growler planes, and I connected here on N4M's with the mom of one of the pilots he worked with!   The Navy community is a small world.

  • anniebananie55

Hi M's mom - my son is actually at Misawa Air Force base supporting a squadron of P-8s. He is working hard and enjoying the experience. I don't know if he will cross paths with your son there, but it could certainly happen in the future!

  • CheriH

Need some help moms...I remember reading somewhere about a company that makes banners for Homecoming at a very reasonable price.  And of course, I can't remember where.  Anyone have that info?  My husband is going on the Tiger Cruise and I get to join my DIL for the Homecoming.  Thanks!

  • LindaB

CheriH - I used BuildASign.com   They did a very nice banner. The banner was free, but you had to pay a little if you wanted it to have the cords on it so you could tie it to something.

  • Anna

Linda is right!!  Here's the link:

    http://www.buildasign.com/troops

They will make a free sign for servicemen/women returning home.  Not sure if banners are free or not but their prices for service families is very reasonable!!

  • CheriH

Thanks a bunch!  I found it.  On my way to order!

  • AUnavymom

I am new to this group and wanted to say hello. My son went through a college ROTC program and after 41/2 year commission in Dec 2016. He is now station in Sasebo Japan and is on the USS Warrior. I love ready everyones adventures with their children.

  • ChrisyDVM(Chris'sMom)

Welcome AUnavy mom! Where did your son attend college. My son also did ROTC; he attended Miami University, Oxford, OH, graduated/commissioned in 2010.

  • M's mom

Welcome AUnavymom!  My son is also in Japan now, at Yokota, which is actually an Air Force base, but it's the HQ of the Joint US Forces in Japan, so there are Navy and Army personnel there also.  My son and his wife love Japan!  They say they feel safe, and the people are friendly.  They are trying to learn Japanese and speak it with the locals to be polite, but the truth is, most of the younger Japanese people speak English, having learned it in school.    My son & wife have been to Tokyo several times on adventures, and they have had no trouble getting around on the trains, and buying what they want, etc.

Hubby and I are planning to visit them next summer!  The only thing I'm NOT looking forward to is the 15-hr flight from the Midwest, where we live, to Tokyo!    Are you planning to visit your son while he's stationed there?

  • AUnavymom

Thank you everyone for the welcome. My son graduated from Auburn University in Auburn Alabama. It took 4 1/2 years, but if you ask him it felt like 10. As for Japan, he has loved it so far. Being new he is kept busy but he has been able to venture out some.

I plan to try and visit sometime next year. He keeps sending me messages of all the places he wants me to see. I'm miss him but I am also very proud and exciting for him.

  • BuckeyeMom

We just got back from visiting our relatively freshly winged (1/16) DS and new his brand new wife in San Diego!  It was so good to see him looking so good, relaxed and happy!  Wishing that for all of your 'kids' too!  It was a great trip, but THAT was the best part of it!

  • Helomom

Hi BuckeyeMom! Our son is stationed at the Naval Station on Coronado with his family. We love visiting them, it's great having them on our coast. Our next trip down their way will be in September.
  • BuckeyeMom

Hi Helomom!  Our DS is still doing some training on North Island and is 'planning' on being there for a couple more years!  This year he winged, bought a house, got married and that was all before June!

He is also in helo's.  How long has yours been in Coronado?

  • Helomom

BuckeyeMom- They have been there since 2013 on this tour. DS was gone for nearly a year on the VINSON deployment. He will be wrapping up this tour pretty soon but his next orders will keep them at North Island for next couple of years.
