Jh4jh, sorry you had same experience but glad we weren't the only one. Thot maybe I did something wrong. Confirms I won't contact ombudsman. I don't want to do anything to hear from him less than already do.

Can anyone help with homecoming info? Dates and to get on list to get on base? I tried contacting the family readiness group with no response.
  • djk's Mom

I have had only good experience with the GW Ombudsman . I think they should be getting to port soon!

  • BeachBunny

    well. timing isn't right to contact them now, as they are in the middle of the UNITAS LANI international exercise...what an honor to particatpte in this historial event;

An MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter to the "Black Knights" of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 4 prepares to land on the on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). Washington was participating in UNITAS 2015. UNITAS, the U.S. Navy's longest running annual multinational maritime exercise, is part of the Southern Seas deployment planned by U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet. Not only are we participating in the war game exercises but there's humanitarian work going on in the area. This article was posted by the Navy this morning...Bravo Zulu to our fleet volunteers...http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=92055

Great article posted by the Navy on the UNITAS LANI exercise...am proud of what they are doing out there!!

ATLANTIC OCEAN (NNS) -- Sailors assigned to aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), Carrier Strike Group NINE (CSG 9), Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 23 to include USS Chafee (DDG 90) and USS McFaul (DDG 74) and embarked Carrier Air Wing TWO (CVW 2) began UNITAS Atlantic (LANT) Nov. 14, a multinational exercise in the USSOUTHCOM region.

UNITAS LANT is scheduled for Nov. 14-25. Brazil will host the exercise with participation from Cameroon, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, United Kingdom and United States.

"UNITAS demonstrates the strength of our relationships with partner nations and our continued commitment to the South America region," said Rear Adm. Lisa Franchetti, commander, CSG 9. "This exercise provides unique training opportunities between George Washington Strike Group and 11 partner navies that enhance interoperability and allow our personnel to gain experience in a multinational task force training environment."

While the overarching goal is to develop and test command and control of forces at sea, training in this exercise will address the spectrum of maritime operations. Specifically, there will be scenarios addressing electronic warfare, anti-air warfare and air defense, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and maritime interdiction operations, and joint exercises with the Brazilian Air Force.

"Another component of UNITAS LANT, a bi-lateral exercise between CVW 2 and the Brazilian Air Force, will increase tactical procedures and voice/data communications interoperability and provides a venue to develop and standardize tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP) to support multinational maritime engagement," said Lt. Dave Gardner, the operations officer of Destroyer Squadron 23.

Washington is deployed as part of Southern Seas 2015 which seeks to enhance interoperability, increase regional stability and build and maintain relationships with countries throughout the region through joint, multinational and interagency exchanges and cooperation.

Here's a post from the GW Ombdusman facebook page:

This is how my sailor got me on the email distribution list.  I don't think we'll get much detailed info regarding the Homecoming until right before the ship comes in due to security risks.

You ladies make me really appreciate my sailor.  I don't know what I'd do if he didn't keep in touch with me.  He's already added our family's names to the list to be attending the Homecoming.  Email your sailors and lay a guilt trip on them LOL  tell them you need to know they are taking care of things!  Keeping my fingers crossed you all hear from them soon.  Hopefully phone calls will come in when they are in port.

Someone asked (sorry forgot who) about the ship when it is in Virginia.  As for as I know the ship is still suppose to go in for RCOH, at least I haven't read anything that says otherwise.

Thanks for the articles & pics BeachBunny.  Yep our sailors are awesome! Of course we already knew that!!!

  • sethsmom

I sent request to be added with cc to my son. Maybe this will give him a push. Didn't even realize there was such a list.

    Thanks joshmom!
  • navymomfromCT (Ship 11, Div.037)

    I will do the same.....

  • que'smom

Thanks Joshmom, I sent the info to my son to be added to the email list also.  I will ask has he put us on the Homecoming list.

  • BeachBunny

I think after they finish with the international exercise and start thinking of the last phase of the cruise that the communication will change...:))
  • Aliyah

Hi does anyone know the future of the GW As in will it experience underways in its new home port? Because I thought the ship was going to get worked on for four years without going anywhere
  • JH4JH

I received a message from my son yesterday giving me his wish list for Christmas, lol. We actually got to have a conversation (messages back and forth throughout the day). I'm guessing he may have had a bit of down time and was thinking of being home for the holidays
  • sethsmom

Aliyah, that was my understanding too.
  • CountryGirl

@aliyah. The last I heard they will go in & out through out the year. They will try to do a tiger cruise during one of those times. They are being delayed going into yards cause they aren't done with the carrier that is there now.
  • Brooke

I heard the same as CountryGirl.
  • Island Girl

Would that carrier be the Bush you are talking about being in the shipyard? That is my sons ship. It went in last May!
  • Aliyah

Ok @countrygirl thank you! That doesn't mean they will go on a deployment right? Just in & out, do you know if they will be long?.. It's all confusing to me because I thought they didn't have to go anywhere which made me so excited but now this depressing news that I didn't even know of.
  • CountryGirl

Ok so I accidentally deleted my last comment. No it is the USS Lincoln. We have different shipyards here in the Norfolk area. No deployments just in & outs but with that said with the world events any ships movements can change.
  • BeachBunny

A tiger cruise would be awesome! We were under the impression the ship was going directly into repair. Looks like the delay on the Lincoln is a fortunate delay for us
  • MaggieMay

Keeping my fingers crossed for a tiger cruise!  My son is leaving the GW for a short period of time to go back to school but then he'll head back to the ship.  I would love to go on a tiger cruise!  Now I just gotta hope it doesn't happen until my son gets back on the ship!

  • aster

Same this happened to me when I contacted the ombudsman when my son was on the Reagan....I think it might be due to the type of jobs our sons have....

  • Momof5

Any news from our sailors?  Has been rather quiet.  I guess they're busy working hard.

  • BeachBunny

Am thinking theya are super busy, since they are in the middle of the UNTAS LANT inetrnational exreices: Post by Navy on Nov. 16th:

Cool homecoming pictures on navy.mil of the Theodore Roosevelt pulling in to it's new home port SD...part of the 3 carrier swap..they've been at sea since last March headed to the gulf to replace the Carl Vinson, my sailor was on that carrier before the GW. Well, the pictures gave this Navy Mom liquid pride (tears) to see the homecoming pictures...hummm think we're next!

Anyone a stats nerd like me?....Love the picture of the Captain of the CV70 dishing out turkey to sailors... check out this article:http://www.navy.mil/submit/display.asp?story_id=92145

  • BeachBunny

    So,any phones calls???..:)))
  • MaggieMay

No phone call here but I did see a Facebook post where him and his buddies have "checked in". I don't expect a phone call right away. I'm sure a good meal and cold beer is more important to my sailor right now than calling his mom! LOL. Hope they all have a good time....well deserved R&R!!!
  • BeachBunny

Or cold beer while talking to mom... Lol
  • JH4JH

Oh... one happy momma here! Got a call from my son, I haven't heard his voice since they left. He had to borrow a friends phone to call (he hasn't been able to get a cell connection). AND, he finally got his box of goodies. Hope everyone gets a phone call soon :)
  • navymomfromCT (Ship 11, Div.037)

Got a facebook message yesterday.....his liberty buddy got sick so he cannot leave the ship....lost his hotel room  and won't be able to tour the island.....he was not happy sailor.....so hard when things like this happen....he has been waiting for Brazil to spend some time in a hotel.....he didn't get a hotel room in Chile or Peru......and now he is stuck on the ship and cannot leave....everybody else has plans and a liberty buddy....I feel so bad for him...

  • sethsmom

NavymomfromCt that's so terrible. Your heart breaks gor them and want to give big hugs.

Finally got a msg. He assures us he will get us on the list to get on base for homecoming. Let making of travel arrangements begin. Looking forward to seeing his face and feeling his hugs.
  • BeachBunny

navymomfromCT...what a bummer! Hope his buddy feels better soon. And  Hope he can find another liberty buddy.

My sailor gets his room with 3 other sailors. It's cheaper and if one pails out they still can go...he does have one buddy that flakes a lot.

Mine has duty but did go to dinner with his buddies last night.....he has called a couple of times, that's how I knew they were in port, he's usually really quick to call home to confirm hotel reservations...he has called to wish his little brother, turning 18, a Happy Birthday. We set up a Skype date so we all can chat on Thanksgiving....he hasn't been home for thanksgiving in 3 years just like many of the Japan based sailors....he's always on the sea...:)

No phone call but happy message that he made 2nd class. I am so happy as he worked very hard to advance
  • Momof5

When are they due to get test results?  I remember seeing something a few days ago that it would be in two days but don't remember the exact date.  Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving to all you Navy Mommas and families!

  • JH4JH

Happy Thanksgiving and blessings to everyone.
Got a message yesterday from our Sailor, he made 2nd class also, so happy for them all.
Trizia-my goodness, 6 years with not having either of your sons home. God bless them and your family (((hugs))) coming your way.
  • Odi_Ship09_Div140

My solution is to change the holidays. today was stuffed mushrooms instead of stuffed turkey. My heart will be in it when sailor gets leave. Congratulations to all that advanced
  • Brooke

I have a quick question, I have a lease for an apartment that asks for my husband's command address and phone number, I of course emailed my husband and asked him but I was wondering if there were somewhere else I could find this information so I don't have to wait around for his reply? Or is this just something I need to wait for him to answer? Thanks in advance.
  • BeachBunny

Congrats to the sailors that made their advancements...BZ...full list should be up on navy.mil

    Funny Odi_Ship09_Div140...:)

Brooke, as a military landlord. I have a house by an AF base..I'd wait to get the official address and his CO name...my leases have to be approved by CO and command...is that true for you??

My sailor has been emailing almost every day now...anyone else hearing from their sailors??

Happy Navy Mom and Sailor booked his air fare for the flight home for the holidays...mines been gone the last couple of years too...on the Reagan then on the Vinson...:)

hummmm wonder if the last package made it to the carrier, it was shipped Nov. 9th...the Oct 26 package did make it when they pulled into port....

    25SailorMom-NavyMomArt...pretty post!

  • CountryGirl
