My daughter is at PH and is also a CE.
Kym, what battalion did your son move to? Kay is now part of the 3.

Does anyone know protocal for holiday leave during "A" school in GulfPort?  Our daughter arrives right after Thanksgiving and her recruiter told her she probably would not get time off for Christmas.  Just wondering what past practices might be. Thanks.

  • julieb1019

My son was in GP over last Christmas. School does close down for at least one maybe 2weeks. Many people went home but my son had no leave time available so he was alone for for most of it as guys came and went. We skyped for Christmas to open gifts together! If she has leave available I think that she just has to put in for it . Watch Duty could get in the way. good luck
  • sws

Gail - I was wondering the same thing about Christmas. My son will be arriving in Gulfport for A school right after Thanksgiving. Since I will be missing him for Thanksgiving and his ever important 18th birthday, I was hoping to spend some time with him around the Christmas holiday.

  • SeabeeWife20

Gail, most of the time they encourage them to go home for the holidays if they have available leave. The less people in the barracks, the less they have to worry about them. There are some people who choose to save their leave though and stay. It's all going to depend on her filling out a chit and the chit getting approved. Tell her to ask once she arrives.

As for me, this is the first time in 7 years that my hubby and I haven't spent the holidays together. We were very lucky that he came home just in time for Thanksgiving last year, but we miss everything this year. I am not so much worried about myself as I am him. I get to spend time with family and occupy my mind. He on the other hand will be alone....even if he has his brother's and sister's around it's just not the same. Not to mention being deployed to Afghanistan just makes it that much worse. I am trying to find a way to ship him homemade food in mason jars without it going bad. I want him to have a good Thanksgiving dinner and a good Christmas dinner. I sent him a birthday box with his favorite cake in a jar and he loved it. It's funny the things they miss while they are gone. I was outside talking to him one day and he heard the birds chirping through the phone. He was amazed at the sound and couldn't believe how long it had been since he'd heard birds chirp. We really have no clue what it's like for them over there. I try to send as much of home as I can to him so he can feel a little normal.

Kym, you are so right....I have no idea what moms and wives did before technology advanced. They are my heroes, because they were so strong!

  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

SeabeeWife20: I would love to send Tyler a Birthday Cake in a Jar for his 22nd Birthday in December.  Could you message me the recipe please?

Tyler will also be gone for Thanksgiving, Christmas and his birthday this year...first year he won't be anywhere near for those times...I'm sure they'll have a great holiday dinner at some point for those holidays...So cannot wait for homecoming!

    Update from Battalion 133:

Runnin’ Roos Family, Friends and Fans,
Our mettle and conviction of purpose has been tested.  Two of our teammates were in a vehicle that set off an improvised explosive device.  Both are going to be fine.  One teammate is heading stateside and the other will likely remain deployed.  The depth of commitment to our common oath, individual talent, team training and equipment today made an indelible difference.  Everyone performed superbly.  Thank you for your continued support that enables our focusing completely on the tasks at hand.  The Roos are at full stride, and your Seabee is making a positive difference.   V/R,  CO Let's cover them in prayer please!

  • mama bear

Hi everyone, Just checking and seeing how everyone is doing these days.  We are fine my daughter is back in the USA at her home base.  She has been studying alot she would like to rank up.  And she is also studying for a crane operator position.  She amazes me the things she is trying now days, when she was in high school she didn't want to do anything she only did the amount she could to just get by.

  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

Tyler re-enlisted yesterday....In for 5 more years...don't know where his next orders will be since he's a GM (fleet rate)...but we sure have enjoyed having him in Gulfport with NMCB 133...just 2 1/2 hours from home...

  • SeabeeWife20

Mama bear-glad your daughter is striving for bigger things! I'm sure she will do great!!

Joanie-congratulations to your son! I can imagine it has been nice having him so close. Hopefully his next duty station is equally as close!

Things for my Bee are going well. He's in charge of two projects taking place and has gained respect from all his crew. He was really nervous to be in the position at first; but he values everyone and I think that is clear to the people around him. I'm so proud of everything he is accomplishing. He's busy and time is flying for him. I'm doing pretty well at keeping busy myself, and I can't wait for his return!
  • SueCasa

My EO is anxious to finish and get out of Ft. Lost in the Woods and back home to Southern California. Does anyone know if they will fly him back to the same place he flew out of? As a reserve, when will he be expected to report for his weekend at PH? He will return to college in mid-January and will need to find a place to live before then. Does anyone have a sailor in the PH area who is renting/looking for a roommate? Can't wait to have him home and see his tattoo in person!

  • Tobianne

Kay told us they were going. wish she were going also. would be a nice drive at some point to see her. Our Bee's are doing a great thing for this. country. we should be as proud as can be.
  • Tobianne

She is now part of the 3. She says that it is now a huge. as most are since the 40 was spread around. I just told Kayla I wish she were able to go. it would be nice to have her on the same side of the country.
  • Tobianne

Thanksgiving is nice.... however, Christmas is so much better. I am.sure he is working his honey off. I am proud that our Bee's are able to help our own country .
  • tziehl

Hello everyone!!!  I'm new!  My son just got to Port Hueneme, CA for A-school, construction mechanic!  My name is Theresa.  Does anyone here have someone there??????  He was disappointed to find out that his school doesn't start Nov 13th now it won't start until January.  Guess I'm understanding that happens alot?  Does anyone know why???

  • tziehl

Yes I am beginning to see that hurry up and wait!  It stinks but guess I will get used to it and so will he!

  • SueCasa

My son should be home from his A-school (equipment operator) on 11/21. He is reserve and will be at PH and going to college in Camarillo. He's looking for someplace to live off base while in college. He is counting down the days to be out of Missouri and back home.

  • tziehl

Does anyone know about the adopt a sailor program for Thanksgiving??? I talked to him tonight and he asked if there was anyone I know yet with all the groups I belong too!  LOL

  • SueCasa

tziehl, I searched and found an article from a couple of years ago that said the Veterans of Foreign Wars was hosting sailors for Thanksgiving. Maybe Support Services on base can help him find more details. Also, churches generally have programs for members to invite a sailor for dinner. I hope he finds a nice environment to share a meal with caring people rather than have to eat at the mess.

  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

My Christmas Tree made from Tyler's uniform! Love this!

  • DaltonsMom (Ship 13 Div 127)

My son is going to be a CE. Can I bring anything to him at PIR for A school?
  • SueCasa

I took my son's cell phone and charger.  He was thrilled! He had to lock it away until receiving permission/rank up to use it. It's a smart phone so he has been able to access the internet.

  • julieb1019

Hi Tereza  welcome My son is also a BU. Any questions feel free to ask or feel free to vent too. Will he be in Gulfport or california?

  • Tobianne

Hi Tereza. I am TobiAnne, and my daughter is a CE. She is at Port Hueneme she has been there for about a year and a half. Your son will go to Gulf port for his ECS training, then from there he will go to his first duty station ( home port ).They do not find out where they will be until A-school. Unless this has changed. Hang on A-school will be a wonderful change from Boot camp. Right now just concentrate on seeing your son at PIR. Welcome, lots of answers to questions can be answered here.
  • deniseMatt'smom

TobiAnne, Tereza, my son is also a BU and is scheduled to go to Gulfport, his PIR is 12/21 and will be coming home for 10 days at Christmas :) But they haven't given any info on how to get him back to Gulfport after...anything you can offer would be a big help!!! My SR is in ship 11 Div 037....
  • Tobianne

That is his A-school? I am not sure on how they go about leave before and after boot camp. My daughter went from BC to Shepherd and at Christmas the base was basically a shell.... so she was able to come home. She had to pay for this. And they paid for her transfer to GP. But she stayed a few days longer in TX so she had to pay the difference. The Navy always pays to move them from base to base, if single. I am not sure about married. I do think they also pay for that as well. So if he is in GP for A-school, he will stay there for his ECS training. Then he can go to another base for a duty station. They find that out during A-school.
How wonderful he gets to come home during the holidays. My daughter was home this summer after she returned from deployment. She would love to come home for Christmas, however.... she needs to renew her Ohio DL in April and they will not do this early since she will just be 21. So i have said as much as I would love to have her home in Dec. That April is a much better idea. She is going to Washington State with a friend for the holiday.
  • Tobianne

I guess that should have said after boot camp. Lol. However, one of our moms just spent thanksgiving with her SR. He will not PIR until next Friday. So that was nice. Not sure how they go about that. Mine was not in BC during any holidays.
  • mama bear

    Hi everyone ,

Just checking in to see how all are doing, hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  Well the 1st big wedding is over, as a surprise to me they flew home my other daughter who is a Seabee to the wedding for the day.  It was so great to see her and to have my 3 kids back together again.  It was a wonderful day and a lovely wedding.  Still waiting for the pictures though.  Hopefully she can come home at Christmas, that is if, she can find a reasonable price for a plane ticket.  Last year I ddn't get to spend the holidays with us at all, so hoping this time it works out.  Will keep all in our prayers where ever you may be.

  • KathybShip13Div099

My son is going to BC on the 13th and then will be in A school at Port Hueneme as a CM.  Can he take anything with him?  Do I take it with me to PIR?  Just trying to stay on top of things.

  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

When he leaves for BC he doesn't need anything with him except his SS card, Drivers Lic, Dir Deposit Info and a few dollars for snacks/drinks along the way.. All clothes, shoes, etc will be sent back to you in a box unless he donates those items..For PIR you might want to bring a computer, cell, etc for him to use over the weekend...Until you find out when he flies out to PH, you won't know if he can keep those things...I've heard other parents say they met them at the airport flying out and passed those things to them..Be sure and join his BootCamp group so you can stay in touch with what's going on...Tell him "Thanks for Being Willing to Serve". Hang in there Navy Mom...Great adventure ahead!

  • Terry'saproudmom(Ship02-Div936)

@ KATHYB:  My son graduated from PH as a CM last November.  He was allowed everything right away.  We took the black backpack that we bought at the NEX on day of PIR to him at the airport.  If you are at the airport when he checks in at the counter you can get a pass to go through security with him and wait at the gate with him.  My son wanted his own underwear :) a pair of jeans, a couple T-shirts, his cell phone, laptop, and all the chargers.  We added some cash so that he could buy some stuff at the large grocery and NEX on PH base.  We live about 55 miles from PH after he phased up (about 3 weeks) we were able to go get him and bring him home for the weekends.  Nice base.  Much more freedom but not total!

  • deniseMatt'smom

My son just graduated bootcamp on 12/21...we got to take him home for x-mas (yeah!) and he will leave for Gulfport on the 30th, is there any special tips he should know once he arrives at the Biloxi airport....do they have a "Sarge" there to take them to the base?? Any info you all can give will be greatly appreciated....
  • julieb1019

Congrats Denise to Matt and your family. My son who is stationed in Gulfport. The airport has a USO office and the Navy will to pick up new arrivals . The airport is fairly close to the base. My family visited the base last August. The barracks are comfortable and my son like A school and ECS too. You will have good communication now since your son can have his phone and laptop too. We got hotspot service so he could use the Internet in his room. He will also have an address so that all mail and packages are delivered to the base it will change once he is assigned to a battalion. Feel free to friend me in case you have other questions that I did think of at this time. You will all feel so much better now as things will just feel better until deployment that is. That is another whole subject to discuss when the time comes. So happy that you all have had the holidays together at home this year. He will phase up during A school and get freedoms with it. I can ask my son any specific questions that you all may have so feel free to friend me for more conversation!
  • Dona

Hi, Julieb. I hope you are able to enjoy the holidays. We sky pec with our son yesterday. He wasn't too happy and some of the other guys there were giving the day a 2 on a scale of 10. Hopefully he will be back in about 7 weeks or so. We are en route to Gulfport now to meet our daughter-in-law and their little girl to move into their new house. Hope all is well with your son.
  • deniseMatt'smom

Does anyone know how health insurance works when they are home on leave?
  • Joanie Tyler's Mom(133 Bees)

Tyler has been sick at home while on leave in Mississippi....He went to our local doctor/clinic who accepted TriCare...Since it was not a provider on the base list, he had to pay for the visit in full...The clinic filed his claim and he was reimbursed in full in about 2 months...The drug store accepted his TriCare and he only had to pay about $3 for prescription...He just needs to show his military ID as his insurance card....

  • Momofahousefull

Happy New Year to all and may safety and success follow all of our SeaBees!

  • KathybShip13Div099

Terry'saproudmom - Thanks so much.  I wish we would be so close.  We are in Illinois.  Is there a graduation after A school like BC?

  • julieb1019

There is a very informal graduation very few families attend photos are posted of each graduate with their certificate on Facebook so you wont miss anything
  • KathybShip13Div099

    What is the facebook link?

  • julieb1019

Naval construction battalion center Gulfport and NCTC Gulfport also each command has a page as well as the ombudsman and FRG for each batallio if you go to the search bar and start putting in the ito the pages pop up and you like the page to get info to your page it is fun
  • Terry'saproudmom(Ship02-Div936)

@KathbShip13Div099:  Yes, there is.  I was the only  civilian there at my son's.  It was nice but not something you really need to attend.  It is brief and not really a ceremony, more just have their name called, receive a certificate, and shake instructor's hand and have a picture snapped...held in one of the workshops.  I went only because we live so close.
This is the 1st email I''ve sent from my tablet so please forgive any mistakes.  Hope you have a great year ahead.
Terry  (1/8/2013 just got this back in my email so I guess it didn't get to you when I first wrote it...LOL  Sorry I'm sitll trying to learn my tablet)

  • ktssong

Hopping on here tonight to try to get active again.  I spent last year up until Sept. on the Afganistan group then after that I've had a hard time even facing any group because I was having a hard time getting over the deployment I guess.  It was strange I was on here every day then after deployment my head didn't want to think about it....I can truly say all my information and knowledge from Navyformoms has helped me survive all this yet I can't figure out it was what I had to step away from after we got him home safe.  So I have had to return to Seabee Mom group and breathe easy.  What I still can't figure out is if I feel like this how he must feel.  I think it will take us longer than we thought to wrap our heads around the fact that  it's behind us.  I do want to say all his training in bootcamp and A school and even after at FEX was wonderful.  I have grown in the two years he has been in  to have a greater admiration for our military and the training and care we give our military and families than I ever had in my life.  It's been a real eye opener.  The family readiness group and ombudsman's are fantastic.   There aren't words to say how appreciative me and my daughter in law were at how they kept us updated.  And still do.  If you aren't involved with the family readiness group, try to get involved.  They will keep you posted.
